Viele Musikliebhaber auf der ganzen Welt wissen nur wenig über Ley, obwohl er die kongolesische Musikszene über 50 Jahre lang beherrscht hat. Er war der erste Sänger Schwarzafrikas, der das Publikum im berühmten "Olympia" von Bruno Coquatrix in Paris über einen Monat lang in Atem hielt. Mit der Herausgabe dieses Buches möchte ich zunächst den Musiker vorstellen und dann einige Fakten und Verhaltensweisen erläutern, die in der Musikpresse Schlagzeilen machten und zu verschiedenen Kommentaren führten. Da ich das Leben des Künstlers mehrere Jahre lang als Journalist und Mitarbeiter geteilt habe, konnte ich im Laufe der Zeit mit Geduld seinen Werdegang rekonstruieren, und zwar dank der Informationen, die ich aus seinem engsten Umfeld und vor allem direkt von der Quelle, d. h. von Tabu Ley selbst, erhalten habe.

Muitos amantes de música em todo o mundo sabem pouco sobre Lord Ley, que governou a cena musical congolesa durante mais de cinquenta anos. Ele foi o primeiro cantor da África negra a manter o público do famoso "Olympia" de Bruno Coquatrix em Paris enfeitiçado durante mais de um mês. Ao publicar este livro, a minha intenção é primeiro apresentar o músico, e depois explicar certos factos e atitudes que têm estado no noticiário musical e que deram origem a vários comentários. Tendo partilhado a vida do artista durante vários anos como jornalista e colaborador, pude, ao longo do tempo, reconstituir pacientemente o seu caminho, graças a informações provenientes da sua comitiva mais próxima e, sobretudo, directamente da fonte, ou seja, Tabu Ley em pessoa.

Many music lovers around the world have little information about Lord Ley, who nevertheless reigned on the Congolese music scene for more than fifty years. He was the first singer of black Africa to hold in suspense the public of the famous "Olympia" of Bruno Coquatrix, in Paris, during more than one month. In publishing this book, my intention is first to introduce the musician, and then to explain certain facts and attitudes that have been in the musical news and have given rise to various comments. Having shared the life of the artist for several years as a journalist and collaborator, I was able, over time, to patiently reconstruct his path, and this, thanks to information drawn from his closest entourage and, above all, directly from the source, that is to say, from Tabu Ley himself.

Molti amanti della musica in tutto il mondo sanno poco di Lord Ley, che ha dominato la scena musicale congolese per oltre cinquant'anni. È stato il primo cantante dell'Africa nera a tenere incantato per più di un mese il pubblico del famoso "Olympia" di Bruno Coquatrix a Parigi. Nel pubblicare questo libro, la mia intenzione è innanzitutto quella di presentare il musicista, per poi spiegare alcuni fatti e atteggiamenti che hanno fatto notizia e suscitato vari commenti. Avendo condiviso la vita dell'artista per diversi anni come giornalista e collaboratore, ho potuto, nel tempo, ricostruire pazientemente il suo percorso, grazie a informazioni attinte dal suo entourage più stretto e, soprattutto, direttamente dalla fonte, cioè Tabu Ley in persona.
