THE ULTIMATE LAYLA & MAJNUN: Complete Poems of Majnun (Qays Ibn al-Mulawwah) Nizami's Layla & Majnun & Layla & Majnun... A Screenplay Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Majnun was a real person! Qays (Majnun='madman') was a youth, a Bedouin poet in the seventh century of the Bani Amir tribe in the Najd desert in Arabia. He fell in love with Layla from the same tribe whom he was denied. (It is said that Shakespeare was inspired by their tale for Romeo & Juliet from their tragic love story). His poetry was composed before and some after his descent into love-madness (mast). Here, in the form of the qit'as in which they were composed, is the largest collection of his immortal poems translated into English. Nizami's famous telling of their tale came from these poems and other sources. It is impossible to underestimate the effect of Nizami's 'Layla and Majnun' on the world over the past 800 years. Many poets throughout this period have copied or been influenced by his story of the young lovers. Many Master-Poets besides Ibn Arabi, 'Attar, Rumi, Sadi, Hafiz and Jami have quoted from him or like him have used the story of the desperate lovers to illustrate how human love can be transformed into divine love through separation and longing. It is said that no one has painted a more perfect picture of women in Persian Literature than Nizami. The correct rhyme-structure of this long masnavi epic poem is here while retaining the beauty of the poetry, mystical meaning and simplicity of the form. 'Layla & Majnun' A Screenplay based on Nizami's version is included here. Large Print (14pt) & Large Format Edition ( 7" x 10") Pages 414 Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. TAO TE CHING Lao Tzu Modern English Version by Paul Smith from the Translation from the Chinese by Paul Carus The Tao Te Ching is a Chinese classic text. According to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the Perfect Master Lao Tzu, a record-keeper at the Zhou dynasty court by whose name the text is known in China. The text is fundamental to both philosophical and religious Taoism and strongly influenced other schools such as Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used it as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia and is among the most translated works in world literature. 'Tao' literally means 'way', or one of its synonyms, but was extended to mean 'the Way'. This term that was variously used by other Chinese philosophers has special meaning within the context of Taoism, where it implies the essential, unnamable process of the universe. 'Te' means 'virtue', 'personal character', 'inner strength' (virtuosity), or 'integrity'. 'Ching' as it is used here means 'canon', 'great book', or 'classic'. 81 chapters or verses in modern English, sometimes rhyming. Introduction on the book and its creator. 147 Pages. POEMS INSPIRED BY 'GOD SPEAKS' BY MEHER BABA by Paul Smith Meher Baba's metaphysical views are most notably described in God Speaks. His cosmology incorporates concepts and terms from Vedanta, Sufism, and Christianity. Meher Baba upheld the concept of non-duality, the view that diverse creation, or duality, is an illusion and that the goal of life is conscious realization of the absolute Oneness of God inherent in all animate and inanimate beings and things. Meher Baba compares God's original state to an infinite, shore-less ocean that has only unconscious divinity - unaware of itself because there is nothing but itself. From this state, God had the 'whim' to know Himself, and asked 'Who am I?' In response to this question, Creation came into existence. In this analogy, what was previously a still, shore-less Ocean now stirred, forming innumerable 'drops' of itself or souls. Meher Baba often remarked... 'You will find all the answers to your questions in God Speaks. Study the book thoroughly and absorb it.' The poems in this book were composed by Paul Smith during studying Meher Baba's masterpiece. THE ETERNAL TRIANGLE The Dance of Love Paul Smith from a Scenario by Meher Baba. Music by Bob Welsh In 1934, Meher Baba dictated a scenario for a projected film entitled 'How It All Happened' to show evolution, reincarnation and the process of Realization. Many famous people in the film world of that time including the great film producer Gabriel Pascal were involved. In 1934, during a trip to Hollywood, Pascal was contacted by Princess Norina Matchabelli (wife of the perfume manufacturer and silent film star 'Maria Carmi') about a film project based on the teachings of her Spiritual Master Meher Baba. Pascal became very interested in this project, bringing writers Hy Kraft and Karl Vollmöller into helping him work up treatments and even making a trip to India to discuss the project further with Meher Baba. The project after many years of discussion never eventuated, mainly because the dialogue for the script could never be agreed upon. In 1987 Paul Smith received permission from Meher Baba's sister Mani Irani and the Meher Baba Trust to turn it into a wordless dance/film. Bob Welsh composed the music. It is only in recent times that the advance of computerized film effects have made the project a possibility. Not only does it represent the evolution, reincarnation and involution of the soul in the form, it represents the history of dance. GHAZALS OF 'ATTAR & THOSE OF HIS TRANSLATOR, PAUL SMITH, INSPIRED BY THEM... Farid al-din 'Attar is seen with Sana'i and Rumi (who he met and influenced) as one of the three most important Sufi Poet-Masters of the 13th century. He composed over forty books mainly in the epic masnavi form, his most famous being The Book of God and The Conference of the Birds. He also composed many powerful mystical poems in the ghazal form that influenced Sadi and Hafiz and all who came later. 'Attar's powerful, honest and controversial ghazals remain as fresh today as they always were. With 'Attar the image of the 'rend'... the drunken debauchee, the thief of love, the carefree outsider, the honest scallywag, appears as the poet, the lover... the voice of the ghazal. The way of the malamati, or the path of 'no blame' has now stepped onto the stage of the play of the history of the ghazal and the story of the lover and beloved, the wine and the intoxicated, the Master and the devotee... will never be the same again! Here is a largest translation of his ghazals in English in the correct-rhyme structure with the beauty and meaning and all by his translator inspired by their first couplets. Introduction: Life & Times and Poetry and essay on the Ghazal. Selected Bibliography, Glossary. 204 pages. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10". SHAHIN OF SHIRAZ The Jewish Sufi Poet of the Time of Hafiz SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Maulana Shahin of Shiraz was a 14th century Jewish Persian Poet who composed only masnavis in the Persian language but written in the Hebrew script. He was alive in his birthplace of Shiraz during the reign of the Il-khanid sultan of Baghdad Abu Said (1316-1335) at whose court was Obeyd Zakani and Khaju Kermani. He is said to have greatly admired three great masnavi writers who came before him, Firdausi, Nizami and Rumi and to have been much influenced by Sufism. It is quite possible that although he would have lived in the large Jewish quarter of Shiraz at the time, with the liberality that existed in that city of about 100,000 (within the walls and another 100,000 outside) he would most likely have come into contact with other poets living there including Hafiz (see Appendix), Obeyd Zakani, Khaju Kermani and Ruh Attar and Jahan Khatun. His first epic masnavi Musa-Nama, 'The Book of Moses' (10,000 couplets) was composed in 1327 and he followed that with Ardashir-Nama, 'The Book of Ardashir and Esther' (9000 couplets) six years later. It would be another 25 years for his last masterpiece to appear in 1358, his Bereshit-Nama, 'Book of Genesis' (8,700 couplets). In his 'Book of Moses' (see cover illustration) he turns Moses into an epic hero like those in Firdausi's Shah-Nama that seems to have been a great influence on him. He should be known as one of the great masnavi Sufi poets of Iran. The form of the masnavi has been kept.
