This book is one long poem in many sections. It is the "masterwork" of this avante garde poet, who has been working on this composition for a decade.

Since 1986, Rachel Blau DuPlessis has been writing a long poem in canto-like sections, grouped in nineteen units. The individual poems fold over each other, using repeated elements to construct a sense of memory and traces or reminders of prior statements. Their themes involve history, gender, mourning and hope, all in "socio-twisty" language.

Presents a study of women's writing and poetics, and representations of women artists in the 20th century. This book probes the work of HD, William Carlos Williams, and Marcel Duchamp, among others, and includes DuPlessis's essay ""For the Etruscans"".
