  • - Chapters 10-13: Volume 13 of Heavenly Citizens in Earthly Shoes, An Exposition of the Scriptures for Disciples and Young Christians

The "Heavenly Citizens" series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."2 Corinthians" is the thirteenth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins with a greeting from God to the Church in Corinth. Then he slowly enters the fray, wanting to tone it done a bit so as to promote communication in that church. Paul's first letter to the Church of Corinth wasn't well received. His rebellious spiritual kids didn't take to his discipline, so they dug in the heels and sided with the heretics who invaded the church in Paul's absence. Papa Paul opened his heart to his spiritual children, hoping with all his heart to turn away from the heretics and back to the Lord Jesus as their King. What heresies were there in the Church of Corinth? Ah, that is the subject of our books on this second letter to the Corinthians. They included lots of strange noises in the church services, a rejection of the physical resurrection of Messiah Jesus and all believers soon to come, as well as several other issues. For a thorough understanding of these issues, we invite you to come inside and join the Bible class with us. We plan to delve into each and every heresy and get to the bottom of it. After all, we wouldn't want to go through the same mess in our church today, would we?The approach for "1 Corinthians", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. In our books we practice the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like.We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully understand the Bible on his/her own. The path lies before you. Walk through the gate and join the journey with us! And may the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ be yours in abundance.

Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."1 Timothy" is the nineteenth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins this letter by presenting his credentials: he is an apostle of Christ Jesus. This is in accord with the authority of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, our hope. This letter is written to Timothy, Paul's true child in faith. Timothy was made the pastor of the Church of Ephesus by Paul, through his authority as an apostle of King Jesus.Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia (contemporary Turkey). As such, it had strategic value for spreading the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire. It was an aphorism of the times back then, that all roads lead to Rome. In that vein it was also true that all roads in Rome lead throughout the Empire.Sharing the Gospel and planting churches in the capital of Roman Asia killed two birds with one stone: new churches were planted, and the Gospel was advertised, and thus disseminated, by folks coming into contact with believers, as they traversed all of Roman Asia and the Roman Empire too. Think of it as the churches serving as huge billboards today. All of Roman Asia was inundated by the Mystery Religions, of which Gnosticism was the chiefest variety. These religious movements claimed to know the secrets of who God is and how man can relate to Him. In reality they were man's opinions about who God is and what it takes for man to approach God. Still, gullible souls will believe anything, which is why these religious movements prospered so far and wide over the Roman Empire.Paul emphasizes to Timothy to preach and teach the Word of God, and to be sure to avoid adding man's words into the message. Gnosticism, as well as other forms of man's words, were already beginning to make inroads into the churches in Roman Asia. Paul provides Timothy with the qualifications and job descriptions of church leaders (i.e., pastors and deacons), as per instructions from King Jesus. The danger from adding man's words to God's Word makes preaching exclusively God's Word so essential, when it comes to man relating to God. This Bible book is must reading for every pastor, before he should be allowed to step foot in a pulpit.Microwave Bible might be quick, but it can never nourish a growing boy into a spiritual man of God. So for a thorough understanding of these issues, we invite you to come inside and join the Bible class with us. We plan to delve into each and every detail and get to the bottom of it. After all, we do want our church today to be spiritually vibrant and fecund, don't we? What better way to accomplish this, than to enjoy a thorough study of the Apostle Paul's "First Letter to Timothy".The approach for "1 Timothy", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Matthew" is the seventh volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. Matthew, a Jew, was hated as a tax collector for the Roman imperialists. This didn't stop Messiah Jesus from calling Matthew to be one of His disciples and even an apostle! Jesus was good at doing unconventional things like that. In this book we make note of a good many suchlike surprises on Jesus' part. Did you know that Jesus' ancestors included some unsavory sorts? Did you know that the religious bigwigs of Jesus' day considered Him to be of questionable character?Don't miss out on those details and much more. Enter through the front book cover and begin your trek through 1st Century Israel. Roman soldiers line the roads and avenues, fig trees are plentiful, and a gorgeous view of the Sea of Galilee and numerous fishermen make for a relaxing view. Jesus is a fantastic story teller. We know His stories as "parables", and He has not a few to tell in this book. Oh, and interpreting them is exciting too! Before we exit through the back cover though, we will have to pass a hill known as "The Skull" and mourn over three crosses and the outrageous injustice done there. Not to fret though. Three days later a sealed tomb is unsealed, only to discover that a dead body is no longer in it. Truth be told, the dead body is no longer dead! Wow!The approach for "Matthew" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. We practice in our books the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like.We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully understand the Bible on his/her own. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so they can feed themselves. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Numbers" is the fourth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. This book records the numbering of the Israelites prior to their departure from Mt. Sinai, where they had spent just over one year. The Israelites were numbered by tribes as part of the military draft! The tribe of Levi was also numbered, but separately because they were to serve as the tabernacle servants to their kin the priests. The twelve tribes were organized into four divisions of three per camp, with each camp being organized into an army and the three armies of each camp forming a division. Each division guarded one of the four sides of Israel's camp during idle times, and they marched in military array during the not so idle times. The Shekinah cloud of Yahweh's presence went in front and led the Israelites during their wilderness journeys.Alas, but the Israelites had nothing on all other sinful men. They rebelled quite regularly against the Lord and His leaders Moses and Aaron. Even Moses' brother Aaron and sister Miriam rebelled against Moses! If that were not enough, Moses' and Aaron's own kin, the tribe of Levi, rebelled against the both of them! Yikes! This book should be renamed "Tide of Rebellion"! Come on in and read a spell and learn all about it for yourself. All of this teaching served as miniature picture stories of hidden spiritual truth. We have the pleasure to study those picture stories (the context). From that context we draw out the principles of hidden spiritual truth, and then we apply the principles to Christian living today. This is the approach for "Numbers" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. We teach the student the meaning of Scripture and we teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."2 Timothy" is the twentieth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins this letter by presenting his credentials: he is an apostle of Christ Jesus. This is in accord with the authority which derives from the will of God. This letter is written to Timothy, Paul's beloved son. Still, gullible souls will believe anything, which is why these religious movements prospered so far and wide over the Roman Empire.Paul emphasizes to Timothy to preach and teach the Word of God, and to be sure to avoid stirring man's words into the message. Gnosticism, as well as other forms of man's words, was already beginning to make inroads into the churches in Roman Asia. The danger from adding man's words to God's Word makes preaching only God's Word so essential, when it comes to man relating to God. In this book Moses made his first appearance in history and went from rags to riches before he was a year old! (He sure beats Bill Gates, huh?) He spent forty years in the royal palace as kin to Pharaoh, but threw it all away by taking the side of the Hebrew slaves and their God Yahweh...which effectively reversed his worldly position from riches to rags!Moses spent the next forty years on the back side of the desert, before the Lord called him to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. The Book of Exodus records Israel's deliverance out of Egypt and their march to Mt. Sinai, where the Lord gave them the Law to govern them in the Promised Land and the tabernacle worship setup as their means to have a relationship with Him.We have the pleasure to learn what the Law of Moses meant to the Israelites (the context). Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity. "1 Peter" is the twenty-third volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. Apostle Peter begins with an observation to be seen on any day, in any age, in the life of any believer. The issue is "suffering" and the right worldview to take toward it. Peter points believers to their suffering, notes how Messiah Jesus went through all of the same suffering before them, and is there with them to lead them through their own suffering. Then Peter exhorts them to look past their suffering and look upward to eternity, where Messiah Jesus is preparing a place for them. When their time comes and they go to their eternal home, King Jesus will reward them for their suffering, and for their service to Him in doing the ministry to which He appoints them. Additionally, the Apostle Peter instructs the believers on how they are to live on earth. They are to be holy, even as Christ Jesus is holy. To be holy is defined by Peter by many practical applications in their daily living. One such application has to do with submission on every level. Anyone who has authority over the believer is to exercise that authority as God's Word instructs because their authority come from God. Those under authority are to submit to those over them, as doing so to King Jesus, the ultimate authority and wellspring of all authority. Folks today are much too busy! We haven't time for the necessary things because we are so busy being sidetracked by secondary things. Many Christians in this state of affairs find it useful to read daily devotional booklets. These consist of brief articles, two or three paragraphs, which highlight one basic point of the Bible. They do allow for brevity, but they do not allow for adequate spiritual nourishment. This book is an attempt to bridge this gap. The book consists of 210 pages and 96 articles, each one serving as a daily spiritual vitamin supplement. Unlike the brief daily devotional booklets however, these articles are somewhat longer. Thus they can offer substantially more feeding without being unduly long. The longer articles I divided into Parts 1 and 2, and sometimes even Part 3 or more. If you desire to grow spiritually, I mean really mature in Christlikeness, but you cannot at this time devote adequate time to do so, give this book a try. I think you will find it quite useful...and the price is right! The Lord Jesus be praised!

It was a strong and thriving church at the time of this letter, sending out missionaries to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and plant churches all over Roman Asia. But two spiritual dangers threatened this vibrant church notwithstanding. This too is a long story, so we invite you to come inside and read all about it as well.Microwave Bible might be quick, but it never can nourish a growing boy into a spiritual man of God. So for a thorough understanding of these issues, we invite you to come inside and join the Bible class with us. We plan to delve into each and every detail and get to the bottom of it. After all, we do want our church today to be spiritually vibrant and fecund, don't we? What better way to accomplish this, than to enjoy a thorough study of the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Ephesians. The approach for "Ephesians", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture.

Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Colossians" is the seventeenth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins this letter with a greeting from God the Father. It is written to the Church of Colosse, located on the eastern border of the Roman province of Asia (modern Turkey).Colosse had once been the major city of eastern Roman Asia. But when Rome took over, the trade route through Colosse was moved to Laodicea, and Colosse quickly became a has-been hick town of little consequence. Nonetheless, God doesn't despise small things, no matter how small they may be; so He sent the Gospel there and a church was established. The landscape and culture of Roman Asia in Bible times was pervaded with the "mystery religions", of which "Gnosticism" was one. That had to do with inside concerns for this immature church. Other spiritual dangers from outside also threatened the church. The "Heavenly Citizens" series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so they can feed themselves. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Exodus" is the second volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. From that context we draw principles behind the Law, and then we apply those principles to Christian living today. That is the approach for "Exodus" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. We teach the student the meaning of Scripture and we teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. We practice in our books the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like.We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully intelligently study the Bible on his/her own. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. The approach for "James", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. In our books we put into practice the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."1 Corinthians" is the twelfth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins with a greeting from God to the Church in Corinth. Then he jumps right into the fray, for a fray it is in that church. Serious church discipline is unavoidable, if this local church is to keep its standing as one of the Lord's lampstands in the Church. What would you think, should you visit a local church one Sunday morning, and everyone there was making strange noises all at the same time? Most of us would likely head for the hills pronto! Sadly, but that was a problem in the Church of Corinth. Also, they claimed to believe the Gospel, but they didn't believe in a physical, bodily resurrection of the dead. What do they think happened to Jesus on a Sunday morn circa 27 A.D.?And then there was the situation during the celebration of the Lord's Supper... But perhaps I should stop at this point. There are far too many weird doings and cockamamie doctrines going on in the Church of Corinth. Permit me, please, to take the best approach and invite you into our Bible study to discover these situations with us. We plan to delve into them and get to the bottom of it. After all, we wouldn't want to go through the same mess in our church today, would we?The approach for "1 Corinthians", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own.
