  • - Chapter 1: Volume 24 of Heavenly Citizens in Earthly Shoes, An Exposition of the Scriptures for Disciples and Young Christians
    av Randy Green
    167

The Heavenly Citizens series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity. 2 Peter is the twenty-fourth volume in the Heavenly Citizens series. Apostle Peter begins with a full-length presentation for the stages of sanctification (aka the lifelong process of the believer spiritually maturing into the image of Jesus). By way of his credentials as an authority to teach on this subject, Brother Peter relays the account of being on the Mount of Transfiguration with Messiah Jesus. Additionally, Peter teaches that, as an apostle personally chosen by King Jesus, what he teaches is the inspired Word of God. The Holy Spirit inspires the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit teaches the Word of God to believers, so that they increasingly become sanctified. The Apostle Peter next warns the believers of the dangers which face them, should they ignore their sanctification. In Old Testament days the nation of Israel was plagued with false prophets, who flourished in Israel because of a lack of a Scriptural foundation. So too, warns Peter, that believers in the Church will be plagued with false teachers, who will flourish because believers don't feed on the Word of God daily. Then Brother Peter reminds them of God's judgments on both angels and mankind, to destroy sinful angels and mankind from totally taking over heaven and earth. Peter names three such judgments: Satan's rebellion against God in heaven, Noah's Flood, and Sodom & Gomorrah. From there the Apostle Peter goes on to reveal how the day of the Lord will be upon them at any moment, followed by a new heaven and earth. With this in view, Brother Peter instructs the believers on how they are to live on earth, so as to avoid God's judgment on themselves. They are to be holy, even as Christ Jesus is holy. To help achieve their sanctification, they should focus on their heavenly citizenship and live like they belong there. The approach for 2 Peter, and for every volume in the Heavenly Citizens series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. In our books we put into practice the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like. We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully understand the Bible on his/her own. The path lies before you. Walk through the gate and join the journey with us! And may the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ be yours in abundance.

The "Heavenly Citizens" series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Colossians" is the seventeenth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins this letter with a greeting from God the Father. It is written to the Church of Colosse, located on the eastern border of the Roman province of Asia (modern Turkey).Colosse had once been the major city of eastern Roman Asia. But when Rome took over, the trade route through Colosse was moved to Laodicea, and Colosse quickly became a has-been hick town of little consequence. Nonetheless, God doesn't despise small things, no matter how small they may be; so He sent the Gospel there and a church was established. The landscape and culture of Roman Asia in Bible times was pervaded with the "mystery religions", of which "Gnosticism" was one. To the Gnostics God could not have a human son because... Well, that is a long story, one which is to be found inside this seventeenth volume of our "Heavenly Citizens" series. So come inside and read all about it!Unlike the churches in Galatia and the Church of Corinth, the Church of Colosse was not steeped in heresy. It was a small and fledgling church at the time of this letter. The believers were growing in the Lord, but they needed help from the outside, if they were to grow any further in the Word of God. That had to do with inside concerns for this immature church. Other spiritual dangers from outside also threatened the church. This too is a long story, so we invite you to come inside and read all about it as well.Microwave Bible might be quick, but it never can nourish a growing boy into a spiritual man of God. So for a thorough understanding of these issues, we invite you to come inside and join the Bible class with us. We plan to delve into each and every detail and get to the bottom of it. After all, we do want our church today to be spiritually vibrant and fecund, don't we? What better way to accomplish this, than to enjoy a thorough study of the Apostle Paul's "Letter to the Colossians".The approach for "Colossians", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. The Apostle Paul begins with a greeting from God to the Church in Corinth. Then he jumps right into the fray, for a fray it is in that church. Serious church discipline is unavoidable, if this local church is to keep its standing as one of the Lord's lampstands in the Church. What would you think, should you visit a local church one Sunday morning, and everyone there was making strange noises all at the same time? Most of us would likely head for the hills pronto! Sadly, but that was a problem in the Church of Corinth. Also, they claimed to believe the Gospel, but they didn't believe in a physical, bodily resurrection of the dead. What do they think happened to Jesus on a Sunday morn circa 27 A.D.?And then there was the situation during the celebration of the Lord's Supper... But perhaps I should stop at this point. There are far too many weird doings and cockamamie doctrines going on in the Church of Corinth. Permit me, please, to take the best approach and invite you into our Bible study to discover these situations with us. We plan to delve into them and get to the bottom of it. After all, we wouldn't want to go through the same mess in our church today, would we?The approach for "1 Corinthians", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. The "Heavenly Citizens" series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so they can feed themselves. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Numbers" is the fourth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. This book records the numbering of the Israelites prior to their departure from Mt. Sinai, where they had spent just over one year. The Israelites were numbered by tribes as part of the military draft! The tribe of Levi was also numbered, but separately because they were to serve as the tabernacle servants to their kin the priests. The twelve tribes were organized into four divisions of three per camp, with each camp being organized into an army and the three armies of each camp forming a division. Each division guarded one of the four sides of Israel's camp during idle times, and they marched in military array during the not so idle times. The Shekinah cloud of Yahweh's presence went in front and led the Israelites during their wilderness journeys.Alas, but the Israelites had nothing on all other sinful men. They rebelled quite regularly against the Lord and His leaders Moses and Aaron. Even Moses' brother Aaron and sister Miriam rebelled against Moses! If that were not enough, Moses' and Aaron's own kin, the tribe of Levi, rebelled against the both of them! Yikes! This book should be renamed "Tide of Rebellion"! Come on in and read a spell and learn all about it for yourself. All of this teaching served as miniature picture stories of hidden spiritual truth. We have the pleasure to study those picture stories (the context). From that context we draw out the principles of hidden spiritual truth, and then we apply the principles to Christian living today. This is the approach for "Numbers" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. We teach the student the meaning of Scripture and we teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. We practice in our books the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like.We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully and intelligently study the Bible on his/her own. Matthew, a Jew, was hated as a tax collector for the Roman imperialists. This didn't stop Messiah Jesus from calling Matthew to be one of His disciples and even an apostle! Jesus was good at doing unconventional things like that. In this book we make note of a good many suchlike surprises on Jesus' part. Did you know that Jesus' ancestors included some unsavory sorts? Did you know that the religious bigwigs of Jesus' day considered Him to be of questionable character?Don't miss out on those details and much more. Enter through the front book cover and begin your trek through 1st Century Israel. Roman soldiers line the roads and avenues, fig trees are plentiful, and a gorgeous view of the Sea of Galilee and numerous fishermen make for a relaxing view. Jesus is a fantastic story teller. We know His stories as "parables", and He has not a few to tell in this book. Oh, and interpreting them is exciting too! Before we exit through the back cover though, we will have to pass a hill known as "The Skull" and mourn over three crosses and the outrageous injustice done there. Not to fret though. Three days later a sealed tomb is unsealed, only to discover that a dead body is no longer in it. Truth be told, the dead body is no longer dead! The Apostle Paul begins this letter with a greeting from God the Father and God's Son Jesus. It is written to the Church of Philippi, located inland off the northern coast of the Aegean Sea in Macedonia (northern Greece).Philippi served as a sort of watchtower on the major overland route between Europe and Asia. Folks who served in the Roman Legions were rewarded with a retirement plan: after faithfully serving Rome for a lengthy tour of duty in the military, they were given property in various locations of the Roman Empire. They were also made Roman citizens. Philippi was a military outpost, where some of these retired Roman legionnaires lived out their golden years as citizens of Rome with landed property to their name.Unlike the churches in Galatia and the Church of Corinth, the Church of Philippi was not steeped in heresy. It was a strong and thriving church at the time of this letter, supporting the Apostle Paul on his missions trips as he preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ and planted churches all over the Roman Empire. • - Spiritual Vitamins: Winter
    av Randy Green

Folks today are much too busy! We haven't time for the necessary things because we are so busy being sidetracked by secondary things. Many Christians in this state of affairs find it useful to read daily devotional booklets. These consist of brief articles, two or three paragraphs, which highlight one basic point of the Bible. They do allow for brevity, but they do not allow for adequate spiritual nourishment. This book is an attempt to bridge this gap. The book consists of 219 pages and 90 articles, each one serving as a daily spiritual vitamin supplement. Unlike the brief daily devotional booklets however, these articles are somewhat longer. Thus they can offer substantially more feeding without being unduly long. The longer articles I divided into Parts 1 and 2, and sometimes even Part 3. If you desire to grow spiritually, I mean really mature in Christlikeness, but you cannot at this time devote adequate time to do so, give this book a try. I think you will find it quite useful...and the price is right! The Lord Jesus be praised!

Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Acts" is the eighth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. Acts begins with Messiah Jesus' command to His disciples to stay in Jerusalem until they were baptized with the Holy Spirit. Then Jesus ascended into heaven. Ten days later Pentecost occurred and... Well, that information is available in the exposition we provide in our four volume set on the "Book of Acts".What is the Church? What was it created to be? What role did Peter and Paul have in this? What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? What is "speaking in tongues" and does it still hold relevance today? Where is Jesus, and will we ever see Him again? Those great questions, and many more, are answered inside the covers of our four volume set on the "Book of Acts". You mustn't miss out on the wholesome spiritual nourishment! Before we exit through the back cover, we will travel throughout the Promised Land. Then we will turn north and enter Syria, sail to Cyprus and Asia Minor, cross into Europe and visit Greece, and even end up in Rome, Italy. Wow! What travel agency can top that? The approach for "Acts" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. In our books we practice the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like.We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully understand the Bible on his/her own. The path lies before you. Walk through the gate and join the journey with us! And may the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ be yours in abundance.

The writer to the Hebrews begins by making a drawing a vital distinction. Once upon a time God spoke to man through messengers (aka "angels"), but now He speaks to man directly through His Son.From there our writer shows the superiority of the Son of God to the angels, to Moses, to Joshua bin Nun, and to the Aaronic priests. He ties it all to the spiritual truth that the Covenant of Grace is superior to the Covenant of Law. The believing Hebrews of the 1st Century A.D. left the Covenant of Law and joined the Covenant of Grace. They chose God's Son Jesus over God's servant Moses. Let them not think to exit the Covenant of Grace and return to the temple and Torah observance. Messiah Jesus is the only way to Father God.The Book of Hebrews concludes with a practical application section (chapters 11-13), in which the spiritual truths taught in the first section of doctrinal teaching (chapters 1-10) are applied to daily living. This is where the rubber meets the road. We learn how to live as a Christian in the second section. We learn what it is to be a Christian in the first section. The approach for "Hebrews", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. Paul never was one to dilly dally around. The reality of sin in the world is presented in all its stark hideousness. Then Paul shows how sin infects both Jews and Gentiles alike. What with man's sin-infested condition, the need for a Savior is evident. Sin sets man at war with God and His righteousness. Sin demands the death of the sinner, hence the need for a Savior if man is to live.Voilà! Entre Messiah Jesus (aka Jesus Christ). Man can have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Man also receives the Holy Spirit, the new life of Christ in us, the hope of glory. By living according to the Word of God in the power of the Spirit, born again man can maintain his newfound relationship with God.Do the Jews still obey the Law of Moses, in order to have a relationship with God? And what is the Church's relationship to the Jews? In chapters 9-11 Paul reveals that Biblical mystery and answers the questions fully. You will likely be surprised by the Spirit's revelation of this mystery. In chapters 12-16 Paul concludes his "Letter to the Romans" by applying the spiritual truths taught in the first eleven chapters. First he taught us who we are, and then he taught us what this means for our daily living. Great stuff, this! You won't want to miss out on even one small bite of the spiritual nutriment. The book consists of 230 pages and 90 articles, each one serving as a daily spiritual vitamin supplement.

The sky is falling! No, Chicken Little isn't back in vogue. But the end times are upon us. Has your attention been drawn to such themes as Armageddon, the Apocalypse, antichrist, the Rapture, and other such events? TV and movies are including them in ever-increasing measure. The same thing happened at the time of Jesus' birth circa 7 B.C. When the time draws near for Biblical prophecies to be fulfilled, God gets folks interested in them. What does that tell us about today? The "Heavenly Citizens" series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."Revelation" is the eleventh volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle John was exiled by the Roman emperor to the island of Patmos, in the Aegean Sea off modern Turkey. In the solitude he had there, he was visited by Messiah Jesus. The Lord gave him a vision of Himself glorified, a vision even more glorious than what John witnessed on the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus followed that with a portrayal of the entire Church Age, and then gave a vivid account of the end times. It is customary for folks today to flock to end-times stories. We are fascinated by what we don't know, and we want to get the latest scoop on the unknown, so that we can be one up on everyone else. But that is not the purpose for which God reveals the future to us, as we can ascertain by a quick reading of Deuteronomy 29:29.In keeping with God's purpose, we spend our time in studying "Revelation" by limiting the guess work, which serves only to tickle our fancy, and in its place substitute a practical application of the text to our lives for today. Why did Messiah Jesus reveal these events to the Apostle John? What are we to learn from this revelation, that will help us to live each day like God calls us to live?Yes, this revelation is long and full of exciting details, so we wouldn't dream of leaving any of that out. Truth be told, we spend considerable time on each and every verse in the "Book of Revelation". But if we leave it at that, then we have failed God and ourselves. Messiah Jesus didn't die so that we can be smart and intellectual! He died so that we might have new life, His life in us. That is our guiding principle in studying the "Book of Revelation", viz., how to make better disciples for our Lord. The approach for "Revelation", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity."James" is the twenty-second volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. Pastor James begins by making an observation to be seen on any day, in any age, in the life of any believer. The issue is "suffering" and the right worldview to take toward it.From there Pastor James rattles off several areas of "testing" (aka "temptation"), taking the time to delve into each one and the believer's appropriate response to it. Brother James does this in the context of his readers at the time and the specific tests they were encountering, but the application of what he teaches is still just as current for every believer today. These are practical, everyday situations. One believer will experience one or more of these "tests", another believer a different one or more...but all of us will experience them. So you won't want to miss out on the provisions which our Savior and King, Jesus, provides us in overcoming them.Unlike the writings of the Apostle Paul, Pastor James doesn't include an opening section of doctrine followed by a practical application section. James simply states the issue, viz., testing or temptations in the lives of the believers, then charges right into the fray to tackle each one. All of James is practical application. The approach for "James", and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. He spent forty years in the royal palace as kin to Pharaoh, but threw it all away by taking the side of the Hebrew slaves and their God Yahweh...which effectively reversed his worldly position from riches to rags!Moses spent the next forty years on the back side of the desert, before the Lord called him to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. The Book of Exodus records Israel's deliverance out of Egypt and their march to Mt. Sinai, where the Lord gave them the Law to govern them in the Promised Land and the tabernacle worship setup as their means to have a relationship with Him.We have the pleasure to learn what the Law of Moses meant to the Israelites (the context). From that context we draw principles behind the Law, and then we apply those principles to Christian living today. That is the approach for "Exodus" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like.We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully intelligently study the Bible on his/her own. The path lies before you. Walk through the gate and join the journey with us! And may the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ be yours in abundance.

The book consists of 212 pages and 90 articles, each one serving as a daily spiritual vitamin supplement.

We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity. In the Book of Genesis we have the fallacies of evolution debunked, the origins of the world and mankind and sin revealed, and the first case of fratricide and attempted deicide narrated. The families of man are exposed as numbering two, and their development from creation to circa 1500 BC is narrated. The Tower of Babel, and the Lord's call of Abraham and establishment of the Hebrew people are studied in Book I. "Genesis Book I: Chapters 21-20" is the first book of Volume I in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. In "Book II: Chapters 21-36" we continue Genesis by examining the accounts of Isaac vs. Ishmael, and Jacob vs. Esau. In "Book III: Chapters 37-50" the sibling rivalry of Joseph and his eleven brothers is narrated, and the eventual move from Canaan to live in Egypt occurs. We have the pleasure to learn about the Lord's solution for sin in the world (the context). From this context we draw principles behind the Lord's solution, and then we apply those principles to Christian living today. This is the approach for "Genesis" and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. We teach the student the meaning of Scripture and we teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own.
