Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was born in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Zweig travelled widely, living in Salzburg between the wars, and was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he moved to London, where he wrote his only novel Beware of Pity. He later moved on to Bath, taking British citizenship after the outbreak of the Second World War. With the fall of France in 1940 Zweig left Britain for New York, before settling in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is available from Pushkin Press.

Stefan Zweig based his biography of Marie Antoinette, who became the Queen of France when still a teenager, on her correspondence with both her mother and her great love the Count Axel von Fersen. Zweig analyses the chemistry of a woman's soul, from her intimate pleasures to her public suffering as a Queen under the weight of misfortune and history. Zweig describes Marie Antoinette in the king's bedroom, in the enchanted and extravagant world of the Trianon and with her children. He also gives an account of the Revolution, the Queen's resolve during the failed escape to Varennes, her imprisonment in the Conciergerie and her tragic end under the guillotine. This has been the definitive biography of Marie Antoinette since its publication, inspiring later biographers, including Antonia Fraser, and the recent film adaptation.

Zweig schreibt im Vorwort: "Solche dramatisch geballten, solche schicksalsträchtigen Stunden, in denen eine zeitüberdauernde Entscheidung auf ein einziges Datum, eine einzige Stunde und oft nur eine Minute zusammengedrängt ist, sind selten im Leben eines Einzelnen und selten im Laufe der Geschichte. [...] Ich habe sie so genannt, weil sie leuchtend und unwandelbar wie Sterne die Nacht der Vergänglichkeit überglänzen." Die Texte sind keine historischen Analysen, sondern novellistisch zugespitzte Erzählungen, in deren Mittelpunkt jeweils eine biografisch überhöhte Person steht.

Die Welt von Gestern, mit dem Untertitel "Erinnerungen eines Europäers", ist ein autobiografisches Werk Stefan Zweigs. Das Buch entstand kurz vor Zweigs Tod in den letzten Jahren (von 1939 bis 1941) seines Exils und erschien postum 1942 im Bermann-Fischer Verlag AB in Stockholm. Das Buch zeichnet sich durch die persönliche Nähe aus, die der Leser durch die fein gewebte literarische Struktur zum Ich-Erzähler bekommt. Das Werk verbindet damit den objektiven Blick auf die Kultur des alten Europas mit teilweise persönlichen Innenansichten des Ich-Erzählers.
