So wenig wie die künstlerische Thätigkeit, ebenso wenig ist auch unser Kunstgenuß bedingt durch die verständesmäßige Einsicht in die Gründe, auf denen die Wirkung des Kunstwerkes beruht. Und es ist gut, daß es sich so verhält. Wäre es anders, aller Kunstgenuß geriete ins Schwanken. Vor allem dürfte kein tragisches Kunstwerk auf eine sichere und bei allen gleichartige Wirkung rechnen. So groß ist die Unsicherheit und Gegensätzlichkeit der Anschauungen über den "Grund unseres Vergnügens an tragischen Gegenständen."Die verstandesmäßige Einsicht bedingt nicht den Kunstgenuß. Aber die vermeintliche Einsicht, die falsche Theorie vermag ihn empfindlich zu schädigen. Nicht bei solchen, die die Theorie haben, aber klug genug sind, von ihr angesichts des Kunstwerkes keinen Gebrauch zu machen; die sich zu Hause an ihrer Theorie der Tragödie, im Theater an der Tragödie erfreuen. Sie schaffen sich nur einen doppelten Genuß. Für sie ist die Theorie ein Luxus, den man ihnen wohl gönnen mag. Wohl aber muß die falsche Theorie Schaden stiften bei denjenigen, die damit praktisch Ernst machen. Sie suchen, durch die Theorie verleitet, im Kunstwerk, was die Theorie vorschreibt, und finden natürlich, was sie suchen. Und sie übersehen mit ihrem durch die Theorie mißleiteten Blick, was das Kunstwerk bieten will und bietet.Vielleicht beruht die falsche Theorie immerhin auf ästhetischem Boden; sie ist hervorgegangen aus oberflächlicher und einseitiger Betrachtung des Kunstwerkes. Dies ist der bei weitem günstigere Fall. Schlimmer ist es, wenn eine der Kunst fremde Theorie, eine Welt- oder Lebensauffassung, wie sie der "Philosoph" aus der Betrachtung der Wirklichkeit gewonnen oder in seinen Mußestunden erträumt hat, dem Kunstwerk untergeschoben, und dies zum Mittel gemacht wird, jene Welt- oder Lebensauffassung zu verkündigen oder zu bestätigen.

Achten wir auf die Geschichte der Psychologie und Ästhetik des Komischen in unseren Tagen, so sehen wir den ersten jener beiden Wege am entschiedensten eingeschlagen von Hecker in seiner "Physiologie und Psychologie des Lachens und des Komischen", Berlin 1873. Dagegen tritt die andere Weise deutlicher hervor bei Kräpelin, dem Verfasser des Aufsatzes "Zur Psychologie der Komik" im zweiten Bande von Wundts "Philosophischen Studien". Hiermit habe ich zugleich diejenigen Arbeiten bezeichnet, die bisher¿abgesehen von den Aufsätzen, als deren Umarbeitung und Erweiterung diese Schrift sich darstellt¿, mit der Psychologie der Komik am eingehendsten sich befasst haben.Wie leicht der Versuch, das Gefühl der Komik in seiner Eigenart zu begreifen, ohne dass man von vornherein an den Gegenständen der Komik einen festen Halt sucht, in die Irre führen kann, zeigt Hecker deutlich. Er meint das Gefühl der Komik zu analysieren. Statt dessen dekretiert er es.Für Hecker ist das Gefühl der Komik ein "beschleunigter Wettstreit der Gefühle" d. h. ein "schnelles Hin- und Herschwanken zwischen Lust und Unlust". "Von einem Punkte aus sehen wir plötzlich und gleichzeitig zwei verschiedene unvereinbare Gefühlsqualitäten (Lust und Unlust) in uns erzeugt werden." Dass sie von einem Punkte aus und darum gleichzeitig erzeugt werden und doch unvereinbar sind, dies bedingt nach Hecker den Wettstreit. In diesem Wettstreit würde die schwächere der beiden Qualitäten unterdrückt werden, wenn eine erhebliche Verschiedenheit der Gefühle hinsichtlich ihrer Stärke bestände. Eine solche besteht aber nach Hecker nicht. Die konträren Gefühle sind von "annähernd gleicher Stärke". Daraus ergiebt sich die Notwendigkeit des Hin- und Hergehens. Dasselbe wird zum schnellen Hin- und Hergehen, zum beschleunigten Wettstreit in diesem Sinne, wegen der Plötzlichkeit der Wirkung. Das Gefühl der Lust, das ursprünglich dem der Unlust nur die Wage hielt, erscheint in diesem plötzlich erzeugten Wettstreit durch Kontrast gehoben, so dass in der schliesslichen Gesamtwirkung die Lust überwiegt.
