Thorne Smith was one of the early 20th century's best-known writers of humorous supernatural fantasy. Before reaching global fame with his 1926 novel Topper, he produced a string of popular short stories, of which 'A Smokey Lady In Knickers' was one of the best. Many of the earliest ghost stories and tales of hauntings, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. A magical statue of a nymph by the name of Baggage, an ornamental pool decoration, has playfully endowed the Pebble swimming pool with the power to reverse the aging process.
