Feeling blue is the first historical study of colour in modern British hospitals. The book uses colour to understand the layered meanings of modernity in twentieth-century Britain and its relationship to the 'mundane' or everyday life of hospitals. Colour has long been a crucial part of hospital design and the daily activity of hospitals, from the uniforms that mark out different jobs, to the colour schemes that sort hospital waste. Despite this importance, the history of hospital colour is often overlooked as a subject of study. This book examines colour in relation to six key themes - hygiene, emotion, humanisation, homeliness, play and consumerism - which are tied together by the idea of the 'modern' hospital. Feeling blue opens important new understandings of a wide range of subjects including histories of emotions, health, politics, design, architecture, culture and society, and offers a new framework for thinking about 'modernity' and change over time.

This Element examines the problem of hospital noise, a problem that has repeatedly been discovered anew, with each new era bringing its own efforts to control and abate unwanted sound in healthcare settings. Why, then, has hospital noise never been resolved? This question is at the heart of Making Noise in the Modern Hospital, which brings together histories of the senses, space, technology, society, medicine and architecture to understand the changing cacophony of the late twentieth-century hospital. This Element is fundamentally interdisciplinary - despite being historical, it comes up to the present day and brings in scholarship on space, place, atmosphere and the senses that will have relevance to scholars working outside of historical research. The intersection between medical and sensory histories also puts interdisciplinary research at the Element's core.

Drawing on court records from London and the South West, Sexual Forensics in Victorian and Edwardian England explores medical roles in trials for sexual offences. Its focus on sexual maturity, a more flexible concept than the legal age of consent, enables histories of sexual crime to be seen in a new light.
