Speck's biography examines Paine's work afresh, in light of new thinking about the role of religion in the formation of his political ideology, and also places Paine within the recently-developed context of 'Atlantic History'.

Forced out of power in the" Glorious Revolution" of 1688, and defeated in the battle of the Boyne by William of Orange, the short reign of James II has an importance that reaches beyond his three years in power. This book examines James' role in the American colonies, in Scotland between 1679 and 1862, and his final exercise of power in Ireland.

This book provides a concise, illustrated history of Great Britain over the past three centuries, from its formation as a sovereign state between the Union of England and Scotland in 1707 to its partial loss of sovereignty in the accession to the European Community, confirmed in the referendum result of 1975. Professor Speck emphasises political and social trends. In particular he argues that conservative politics prevailed largely in a deeply conservative society, and that reactionary causes generally obtained more support than radical campaigns. The book is highly illustrated with pictures and photographs and contains a bibliography and other features of use to students and general readers.

The Butcher, in this new edition, deals with the Government's response to the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. Whilst there have many studies of the uprising from the Jacobite perspective, few have tackled the event from the view of the Government and its supporters.
