Naturwissenschaft und Naturphilosophie sind nicht zwei Gebiete, die sich gegenseitig ausschließen, sondern sie gehören zusammen, wie zwei Wege, die zu dem gleichen Ziel führen. Dieses Ziel ist: die Beherrschung der Natur durch den Menschen. Es wird durch die verschiedenen Naturwissenschaften erreicht, indem in diesen alle einzelnen tatsächlichen Verhältnisse zwischen den Naturerscheinungen gesammelt, zusammengestellt und in ihrer gegenseitigen Abhängigkeit erforscht werden, auf Grund deren man die eine Erscheinung mit mehr oder weniger Bestimmtheit aus der anderen vorhersagen kann. Die Naturphilosophie begleitet diese einzelnen Arbeiten und Zusammenfassungen mit gleichen Arbeiten und Zusammenfassungen, nur von allgemeinerer Art. Während beispielsweise die Elektrik als ein Teil der Physik den Zusammenhang der elektrischen Erscheinungen unter sich und mit Erscheinungen aus anderen Gebieten der Physik zum Gegenstande hat, befaßt sich der Naturphilosoph mit der Frage nicht nur nach den gegenseitigen Beziehungen allerphysikalischen Verhältnisse untereinander, sondern er bestrebt sich, auch die chemischen, die biologischen, die astronomischen Erscheinungen, kurze alle, von denen wir Kenntnis haben, in den Kreis solcher Betrachtungen einzuschließen. Es ist mit anderen Worten die Naturphilosophie der allgemeinste Teil der Naturwissenschaft..
