More than 100 pieces in this surprising and impressive collection are drawn from a body of Willa Cather''s writing that was not known to exist until its recent discovery by the editor. Previous scholars have assumed that Willa Cather was inactive as a journalist during the year following her graduation from the university in June, 1895; the truth is, she not only continued to contribute drama criticism to Lincoln newspapers, but also, in Miss Slote''s words, had time to "consider thoughtfully and work out some of the guiding principles of fiction, the certain range in the Kingdom of Art which was becoming . . . her own."Miss Slote has focused on those of the 1893-1896 writings in which Willa Cather formulates and tests her critical attitudes, and on those--even more crucially relevant to her own situation--in which she asks the great questions: What makes an artist? Willa Cather, in full Wilella Sibert Cather, (born December 7, 1873, near Winchester, Virginia, U.S.-died April 24, 1947, New York City, New York), American novelist noted for her portrayals of the settlers and frontier life on the American plains.… Cather's first novel, Alexander's Bridge (1912), was a factitious story of cosmopolitan life. Under the influence of Sarah Orne Jewett's regionalism, however, she turned to her familiar Nebraska material. With O Pioneers! (1913) and My Ántonia (1918), which has frequently been adjudged her finest achievement, she found her characteristic themes-the spirit and courage of the frontier she had known in her youth. One of Ours (1922), which won the Pulitzer Prize, and A Lost Lady (1923) mourned the passing of the pioneer spirit.In her earlier Song of the Lark (1915), as well as in the tales assembled in Youth and the Bright Medusa (1920), including the much-anthologized "Paul's Case," and Lucy Gayheart (1935), Cather reflected the other side of her experience-the struggle of a talent to emerge from the constricting life of the prairies and the stifling effects of small-town life.A mature statement of both themes can be found in Obscure Destinies (1932). With success and middle age, however, Cather experienced a strong disillusionment, which was reflected in The Professor's House (1925) and her essays Not Under Forty (1936).Her solution was to write of the pioneer spirit of another age, that of the French Catholic missionaries in the Southwest in Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927) and of the French Canadians at Quebec in Shadows on the Rock (1931). Two French missionaries -- Jean Marie Latour and Joseph Vaillant -- make their way into the harsh, unexplored, mountainous region of New Mexico in the hope of revivifying there the religion that had been brought by Spanish priests and then left to decay in the hand of an insubordinate and materialistic clergy.Father Latour, first bishop of the diocese, knew how to win the confidence of the Indians and to become a father of the Indians and to become a father indeed to the Mexicans.Slowly and firmly he gained control of the padres of the region, gradually replacing the slothful with men stamped by his own ardor. The cathedral that he built in Santa Fe, using the stones of the region so that it might fit into its surroundings, was the crown of his missionary labor, in which he had succeeded in harmonizing two elements: the Catholic religion and the New Mexican way of life.

The book is written in the third person, but is mostly written from the perspective of Niel Herbert, a young man who grows up in Sweet Water and witnesses the decline of Mrs. Forrester, for whom he feels very deeply, and also of the West itself from the idealized age of noble pioneers to the age of capitalist exploitation.

The Finest family in Sweet Water, The Forresters are known for their gatherings, and Mrs. Forrester, to be an enchanting hostess. Neil Herbert, finds himself at the Forester estate playing with friends, and he falls in love with Mrs. Forrester, and what she represents. As he grows up, he finds it increasingly harder to keep his boyhood image of her, and she does nothing to help.
