During the first half of the nineteenth century, the aristocrat of Washington, DC journalism was the National Intelligencer. It served important educational and policy-making functions in relation to the federal government from the time it was born to fight for the cause of Thomas Jefferson's liberalism until it died espousing a conservatism that had no party to support it.
