William Wrede (1859-1906) wrote the masterful Messianic Secret in the Gospels, which evolutionized New Testament studies. He became Professor of New Testament at Breslau, Germany in 1895 at age 36 and died just eleven years later. Previous publisher was Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht.

William Wrede, geboren 1859, verfolgte nach Abschluss seines Studiums der evangelischen Theologie zunächst eine Laufbahn als Privatlehrer und Pfarrer, bis er sich zunehmend für die theologische Wissenschaft zu interessieren begann. Im Jahre 1891 habilitierte er infolgedessen in Göttingen im Bereich der neutestamentlichen Exegese. Zwei Jahre später erfolgte ein Ruf als außerordentlicher Professor nach Breslau. Als Initiator der Religionsgeschichtlichen Schule trat Wrede für eine wissenschaftliche Verflechtung des biblischen Kanons mit zeitgenössischen Schriften ein. Auf diese Weise sollte seiner Meinung nach eine Einbettung des Neuen Testaments in den historischen Kontext gelingen, um so zu einer wissenschaftlich fundierten Religionsgeschichte beizutragen.
