The full collection of Bach's 6 English Suites (BWV 806-811), edited by Alfred Kreutz. The title English Suites" is generally considered to derive from the fact that they are supposed to have been written by Bach for an English nobleman. This information is backed solely by the remark "Fait pour les Anglois" on the title page of the A major Suite on of the sources.However, if Bach had really composed the suites 'to order' more details of the commission would probably have survived - as in the case of the Goldberg Variations. It is in fact more probable that amongst Bach's pupils and friends the Suites became known as "English" to differentiate them from the shorter French Suites and perhaps because they vaguely followed some musical styles from England. Indeed their design does show a resemblance to Handel's Suites, published in London.Furthermore, E. Dannenreuther, author of Musical Ornamentation Vol. 1 (1893) indicated just how much the "English Suites" resemble those of Six Suites de Clevcin by Ch, Dieupart - who was active in London from 1707 to his death. In fact, Bach knew the Suites of Dieupart, and actually copied them with his own hand. "

Even in these early pieces Fauré's penchant for unusual and daring harmonic shifts is already apparent. This edition offers alternative readings based on Fauré's piano-roll recording of the third romance. Following the release in 2003 of the Urtext Peters Edition publication of Fauré's Pièces brèves (EP 7601), the eminent French music specialist Roy Howat has taken an in-depth look at another lesser-known collection of piano pieces by Gabriel Fauré - Romances sans paroles - to reveal further treasures. Romances sans paroles is French for 'Lieder ohne Worte' or 'Songs without words'. Fauré's only three pieces in the genre, suggesting a youthful homage to Mendelssohn, were his first piano pieces to be published. Exactly when he composed them is uncertain, though most of his biographers suggest it could havebeen any time from 1863 onwards (the year he turned eighteen). In fact the Romances sans paroles are not easy, given the pianist's dual occupation with complex accompaniments and melodies that sometimes echo imitatively across voices. (Fauré was ambidextrous, and the pieces might be viewed in several ways asétudes.) It was thus not surprising that theysoon became as popular, if not more so, in arrangements by Jules Delsart for violin or cello accompanied by piano, published by Hamelle in 1896. Whether on Delsart's or Hamelle's initiative, these transcriptions bowdlerise many of Fauré's more daring passing harmonies, especially in the second Romance, the music's full adventurousness, manifest in the piano version, has therefore been long masked from many listeners and performers.Schon in diesen frühen Stücken zeigt sich Faurés Vorliebe für ungewöhnliche und gewagte harmonische Verschiebungen. Before doing so, Rusalka prays to the moon to tell the Prince that she is waiting for him. The tale ends tragically, with the Prince's death and Rusalka's return to a lonely life beneath the waters." These exquisite pieces are among many Fauré works which have long puzzled pianists with illogical-seeming metronome markings. The issue is addressed comprehensively in this edition, presenting the performer with all the relevant narratives. This collection of short works for piano provides an ideal introduction to Fauré's music for the intermediate player. Although at times the stretch of an adult hand is called for, the technical demands on the pianist are far less than those required to master his larger works, such as the Nocturnes and Barcarolles. Editor Roy Howat has consulted all the appropriate sources and, as a result, has been able to correct the errors and misprints in previous editions of the Pièces brèves. Besides their straight-forward musical beauty, the Pièces brèves are remarkable for their blend of coherence and diversity.
