As Earth's biome crumbles, humanity fails to develop the technologies necessary to stop an impending climate disaster. Faced with widespread starvation and environmental ruin, a radical faction seeks to preserve a segment of humankind by unleashing a deadly virus, targeting the vast heterosexual majority in a drastic attempt to reduce the population and save the planet. However, this extreme measure falls short of halting the escalating environmental catastrophe. With the planet deteriorating rapidly, the remnants of humanity embark on a daring exodus. They set off on a 6,000-year journey to the nearest habitable planet outside our solar system. This epic voyage, devoid of star or warp drive, demands a completely self-sustaining environment, where everything, including the colonists themselves, must be recycled. Amidst this backdrop, one man finds himself an outsider on this formidable journey, constrained by strict rules governing all aspects of life, including reproduction, which is meticulously controlled to preserve the colony's genetic health. Defying these regulations, he forms a clandestine relationship, leading to the conception of an unauthorized child. This grave breach of protocol poses a moral dilemma for the crew: how should they deal with this infraction, and what consequences will their decision have for the future of their fragile society? This narrative explores the complexities of survival, ethics, and human relationships in the face of a daunting interstellar challenge.

Kicking the Bucket has two definitions. It's a vulgar euphemism for dropping dead, or a literal description of your life support system being involuntarily dispensed with on the gallows, i.e., by kicking away the bucket you may be standing on with the rope around your neck, or by voluntarily removing yourself from the felicitations and care of your family, the NHS, 'and Social Services. Charles Fenemore, faced with his inevitable decline into senility like most of his friends, chose the latter with unforeseen outcomes. Leaving his ultimate fate to chance and circumstance, he buys an old boat and sails into 'the setting sun', informing no-one of his intentions except his son who reluctantly aids his plans, and arousing the interest of a washed-up journalist who senses an ulterior motive behind his escapade. Subsequent events cause him to query his own feelings and those of his family left behind.

Today, numerous individuals find themselves adrift, seeking meaning in a world where various ideologies have faltered: Communism, Capitalism, Nationalism, Materialism. Amidst this ideological void, one ponders: What is the essence of life? Who or what can genuinely satisfy human yearnings? Each year, hundreds of thousands embark on the Camino, or segments of it, in a quest for purpose. In 2018, I joined this pursuit, starting my journey on the Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port in France and concluding in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This 800 km trek, spanning forty days, was a solo venture, but as this book reveals, I was never truly alone. Along the way, I encountered numerous individuals, sharing not only the physical path but also profound connections. I wholeheartedly recommend this pilgrimage - far more than a mere walk - to anyone earnestly seeking meaning in life.

In 1519, Pedro, a Franciscan priest, sets sail from Cuba with Hernan Cortes' brutal expedition to South America. Though filled with passion for adventure and converting native peoples to Catholicism, Pedro is unprepared for the shocking barbarity he is about to encounter. Accompanying Pedro is his friend Aguilar, who spent eight nightmarish years enslaved by natives after being shipwrecked. As the journey to Mexico City grows increasingly treacherous - fraught with disease, deprivation, and attacks - Pedro and Aguilar bear witness to scenes of unimaginable cruelty. They stand amazed by the intelligence and charisma of King Montezuma and the exotic sophistication of the Aztec capital with its ornate temples decorated in thousands of sacrificial human skulls. Yet beneath the surface beauty lies a dark terror: cages of men, women and children being fattened for ritual sacrifice, their beating hearts cut from their chests as offerings to the gods. As the campaign unfurls, Pedro and Aguilar are shocked by the brutality of their own countrymen. The ruthless exploitation of natives causes them to question their purpose here. Are they true men of God or merely instruments of Spanish greed? When fellow conquistador Alvarado orchestrates the brutal massacre of Aztec nobles at the feast of Toxcatl, Pedro and Aguilar are forced to make an existential reckoning. Their encounters with local people lead both men to reexamine every aspect of their lives and reconsider what they once thought was their higher purpose.

Poetry is far more than it seems. Writing verse can provide a creative shorthand for working through dark thoughts, making sense of your emotions and behaviours, as well as those of others. Poetry offers a way to navigate the tangled maze of challenges, strife, and joys that constitute our inner worlds. It can also magnify life's wonders, awe, and delight. These varied experiences - regret, mistakes, learning, stumbling, and persevering with bravery - all comprise a life fully lived. Writing poetry helps minimize the bad times and spotlight the good. Revisiting these poems allows for deeper reflection, enriching your life further. Secrets, Lies and Little Joys contains a sampling of my own poems and experiences, along with contextual commentary. In some cases, I provide explanation of the impetus behind the verse. It is my hope these poems find a shared recognition, a communal understanding that you are not alone, mad, or bad in your travels through life.

"Art gotta be high up and dangerous," the graffiti artist tells his mother. It has to be practiced diligently like playing the piano, the longtime members of a life drawing studio believe, and if your view of the model is the model's backside, you don't move for a better view. Art is a mysterious way into your model's sorrow when words fail. Art can open the rooms of your childhood. It existed before there was perspective. It can even be a dinner party. It can make a still life come alive, and it can heal a wounded spirit. Barbara de la Cuesta taught and worked as a journalist in South America. She now teaches Spanish. Her novel, The Spanish Teacher, was winner of the Gival Press Fiction Prize. About her most recent novel, Adam's Chair, Lauren Stafford, of the Manhattan Review of Books, wrote: "A tapestry of literary elegance... A contemporary novel for the ages."
