This book is about a 13-year-old boy, Mike Barnes, whose family moves from Atlanta to a small Indiana town. He faces a lot of unfamiliar challenges in his new school including cliques, peer pressure and first encounters with girls, cigarettes and alcohol. Mike received strong family support and this is a big factor in his ability to handle problems. The story centers on basketball in a state where many consider the sport a way of life. Young people, however face these same challenges, all over the world, each and every day.

MaxAbility is a layered blend of people, stories, philosophies, and raw personal experiences that takes the reader on a journey into the existential questions posed by Max of "who are you?" and "what are you here for?" A young man with dreams, a family's grief over a lost child, a story of international adoption, a tribute to a revered baseball announcer, and the author's own journey into becoming a person separate from the roles she played all help the reader incorporate the narrative into their own life. Reflection question are posed throughout the book, similar to the format of Jeanne's first book, "Sportuality: Finding Joy in the Games."

This unabridged work includes a previously distributed DICTIONARY OF LATVIAN PROVERBS, making it unique and more attractive than similar publications.A translating dictionary, like this one, is a practical dictionary that translates words in existing texts. It does not, as a rule, provide descriptions or explanations, nor does it set norms of how words should be spelled. The aim of dictionary users can be either to understand the source language (the language of the headwords) or to translate it into the target language(the language of the translation equivalents). The user's first language can be either the source language or the target language. This makes for four possible types of interlingual dictionaries (descriptive, prescriptive, or translating).Existing Latvian-English dictionaries indicate that they are intended for users whose first language is Latvian and whose purpose is to translate it into English. This dictionary is intended primarily for users whose first language is English and who wish to understand texts written in Latvian. This, of course, does not preclude Latvian speakers from using it to translate from Latvian into English, i.e., to produce English texts. English-speaking Latvians may, in fact, find it helpful for accurate and natural translation.Other features of this dictionary are: the number of entries(over 106,000), which is more than double that of any other Latvian-English dictionary; the use of American rather than British English; an extensive coverage of technical terms from all fields of science and technology; the comprehensive inclusion of spelling variants; and the inclusion of colloquialisms, common speech words, vulgar terms, slang, barbarisms, selected regionalisms, and terms found in folkloric language. [A dictionary of Latvian proverbs is included in the back. The entries of this dictionary were collected from various extant monolingual and bilingual Latvian dictionaries, general and specialized: spelling dictionaries, technical dictionaries, etymological dictionaries, general encyclopedias, periodical literature, and many Latvian speakers. Of the latter, I want to single out the contribution of the late sea captain, Inats Lejnieks. In his time, the captain had commanded full-rigged sailing ships with Latvian crews, and he supplied the Latvian equivalents of the names of sails and principal ropes, spars, and part of the hull. I was fortunate to have captain Lejnieks share his expertise with me as this material was not available anywhere else.

The heads have stopped spinning from the variety of pieces in Lost and Found and the smoke has cleared from the hard-hitting assault of Locked and Loaded. Now comes the unveiling of a two-part pulse quickening collection of fragments from human emotion.Roses and Blood slithers through out the cracks of emotions and feelings we have all felt at one time or another. Whether it's the warm spark of a new found love or the dying flame of a relationship torn apart. Some have even felt the sweat inducing heat of erotic lust. The roller coaster ride we go through in almost any situation when we deal with matters of the heart.Though no matter how warm and secure we may feel, we can never escape from the icy grip of fear and horror. It can freeze the warmest thought and release the restraints of a dark imagination. Where anything can be a creature and every sound becomes a haunting echo. Thoughts and images drawn from daily newspaper articles and stories that are broadcasted on the nightly news. Creepy visions created and inspired by classic horror stories and films. Personal fears we keep hidden inside ourselves that only surface when we are alone or in the dark. So curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy.(just be sure you lock the door first)

So how could a mother witness a blood trail from her son and not realize he's dying?Simone Phillips, a single, young mother, carries an emotional hole in her heart from her childhood. In turn, she becomes narcissistic and inattentive to her son CJ. Now CJ is a typical, five year old boy in every way. However, his tearful expression of pain from his mother's neglect is both the pathway to his death and the gateway to her deliverance. Witnessed only by Simone, the tear stains that CJ leaves behind manifest as blood stains. But Simone is too self-absorbed to follow this extraordinary blood trail. And it's not until CJ ends up on his deathbed that she realizes the critical impact her lack of maternal love and nurturing has had on him. This is the story of Reverend Charles Harrison Bell (1912-1993), reaching back to his ancestors in the UK, to his early New Zealand settler forebears, and to the lives he touched as a church man, a family man and - a pig farmer. The impact of his evangelist, strong work ethic and impecunious heritage is striking. He was a restless soul, his life one of conflict, torn between farming and the ministry. He chose what he thought was the higher calling but was it - ever - the right path for him? He was continually led astray by the dream of having his own land and his own animals. His parishioners didn't share his dream and he achieved notoriety not popularity as a Reverend Farmer. His commitment was questioned and top appointments in the church eluded him which inflamed his self doubt. As a compassionate, good man, he was a successful pastor, but as a high flyer in the church he was not.His wife came from a wealthy family of successful businessmen and her husband's pitiable earnings and his struggle to succeed both dismayed and touched her. Her own life was marked by tragedy and his by disappointment but they always stood together.Dad was kind hearted, gentle and loving - and always well meaning. Through a combination of sometimes delightful and sometimes dismal naivety, and more than his fair share of bad luck, the tales of his life are often hilarious, often tender, often sad. He wrote a lot and thought a lot. Behind his innate shyness, he felt a lot. This is the extraordinary story of a very ordinary man.

Back Cover TextThis is a novel intended to be read in the traditional manner and also serve aa a predecessor to a screen play. The subject matter is sequenced to represent the scenes as they would appear in historical sequence. However, the novel is written to be read as a conventional book. This novel, as in the previous twelve stories in the series involving Matt and the General, with the assistance of their associates and friends, Matt and the General combine their efforts to solve important problems that involve the safety of the United States, along with problems in the domestic arena. In this instance. the book is set in the beautiful area of middle New Jersey, the United States in general, and in several foreign countries. As in the previous novels, Matt Miller, who has a PhD degree from a prestigious university, and uses mathematical thinking and solid logic, along with the organizational ability of General Les Miller, his grandfather, to solve several major problems, recognized by the President and the Intelligence Director of the United States, as well as two local problems that require the wisdom of the team. The subject matter is supplanted with a historical sequence that described the origin of the General and other team members. In this set of episodes, the action includes a governmental kidnapping, the problems of the military situation with China, the General, and two interesting local situations. Throughout, the activity uses the knowledge of General Mark Clark, the President, and three important women including Ashley, who is Matt's wife, Anna, who is the General's wife, and Ann, who is General Clark's wife. The scene changes rapidly, but always in the scope of no violence, no sex, and no bad language. It is accessible to readers of all ages. The book typifies the conventional "beach" read in that the subject matter can be read as five separate stories. This is the fourteenth book in the Matt and the General series. The characters assume their dynamic personalities as in previous tales. A comment from the author is in order. It was a distinct pleasure to write about Matt, Ashley, Anna, the General, and the Sir Charles Bunday. They are foremost in my imagination. The doctors and medical terminology are just imagined, and anything medical is just made up from reading the Internet. Any reference to doctor's conventions and procedures are imagined.

This book is about the different valleys of life you go through. Sometimes we cry a lot on the inside because people don't know how they hurt us in the things that they say or do. Never offering any apologies because they feel they have done no harm. My House Cried Tears is my life of ups and downs, the tragedies I've experienced and made it through, and the many nights I cried just to get through. Crying is suppose to cleanse but when things are happening one after another you begin to wonder, the tears are constantly flowing and seems to be things are not getting better they are getting worse. The loss of a father murdered the lost of your only son, the lost of a mother to pancreatic cancer, and finally the lost love of siblings. How do you get through? You start to wonder what the next day will bring. How can you push to make what seems to be so dim brighter when there are no one you can talk to anymore? The only son who was your life and provided you with genuine love is now gone, the mother who always had encouraging words to make the worst of situations brighter is gone, the father who was tough but made you the woman that you are today to stand on your own two feet despite the storms of life is gone. No support system. No relation between the siblings and your friends are few, along with the few relationships you have had has caused you heartache. What do you do? You cry and cry because MY HOUSE CRIED TEARS! I always said you have to go through something to get to something but even in that when will it end, that is the question?

The Author was born in the little town of Rahbeh in North Lebanon. He was the youngest of four boys. The family lived in a one room house, with no amenities, no kitchen or bathroom. They lived off the land, a limited bit of land. He and his brothers worked hard to keep the farm up and running. Life in Rahbeh in those days was primitive and simple, reminiscent of biblical times. The author's father who had been in the USA for some years as a youngster came to appreciate the importance of higher education having himself been only to elementary school. Thus the father's life mission was to secure the best possible educational opportunities for his children; this was not an easy task, not in Lebanon in the 1930s and 1940s. To accomplish that he made the remarkable decision to travel to the west coast of Africa where he spent 11 years away from his family. He would send money home to the mother who's job among her many responsibilities, was to make certain the children were applying themselves at school. The author completed elementary education at the age of 11, but because of insufficient funds was delayed one year before going to high school. He graduated from high school at age 16 and enrolled as a freshmen in college at the American University of Beirut (AUB). His father's dream was to see his son as a doctor. He thus was determined that his son study medicine. " I have never doubted that he made the right decision for me" the author states. He graduated from the AUB school of medicine in June 54. During internship he applied and was accepted to work for an oil company. However it was the sincere praise of a single man that not only changed his plan but essentially charted his entire career path. He came to the United States in 1956 to study hematology at Washington University in St. Louis. It was here that Dr. Yunis fell in love with medical research and launched his career as a physician-scientist. Once down that path he discovered an inner drive to succeed and an incomparable passion for his work and the research mission. This book is Dr. Yunis's way of revisiting the highlights of his career and his research accomplishments. It is also the story of how the author moved from a great institution to a young medical school promising a wealth of challenges and the potential for academic excellence.Instead he became closely involved in a struggle between two agendas, an agenda for academic excellence against, what in his opinion, was an agenda for a health care supermarket. Because of poor misguided leadership at the top, a center for academic excellence was not realized. Nevertheless, Dr. Yunis could never be swayed from his pursuit of excellence always recognizing that "our mission as physician-scientists is to constantly generate new knowledge through research for the betterment of the quality of human life and to reproduce ourselves always creating new generations of physician-scientists to carry the torch. It is this noble mission and its execution that distinguishes great medical schools from the average ones." Academic excellence will not thrive at medical centers designed as health care supermarkets. Because such centers place more value on clinical practice and the generation of income they often become graveyards for fledgling academicians. Resources alone, no matter how abundant, will not make a medical school great. It is the leadership at the top; an educated leadership totally committed to academic excellence as reflected by selecting the brightest students and recruiting and retaining faculty academicians of the highest quality. In this book, the author also touches on a number of topics along with his views. These include : life in the United States, our moral values and how they have changed over the past fifty years; our failed foreign policy and the anti-American sentiment in the Middle East; our war on terrorism; the war in Iraq and the quagmire...

'Kanga in the Breeze' is based on the true story of an unlikely sisterhood between a young expatriate mother seeking to immerse herself in the rich ethnic diversity of Kenya and a local Kikuyu mother who by chance becomes a childminder to the white family. As their lives become ever more entwined, there are unforeseen consequences to crossing the racial divide in post-colonial Africa. Building a holiday home on the tropical island of Lamu is a dream come true, but with the rise of Islamic militancy after the fall of the twin towers in America, local communities in East Africa become polarised along religious lines and nowhere is safe. Reminiscent of similar stories of the solidarity between women, such as 'The Secret Life of Bees' and 'The Help' both set in the American South, this is a heart-warming story from Africa of mutual support between two women whose friendship lasts a lifetime.

At a very young age I've listened to my parents tell me stories of hardships and courage during the holocaust of Asia-Minor (Turkey), World War Two, and as emigrants in America. Listening to testimonials, taking notes and looking at our old historical photographs I knew this story had to be told. Certain people can relate to this story but most cannot it brings a strong message that all things are possible good and bad.
