This fast-paced, contemporary, novella, set in Los Angeles reveals the trauma associated with skin colorism by unmasking the lives of three women. Vanilla is a Black woman of Puerto Rican ancestry. She is 'tall and tan and young and lovely'. Her daddy is rich and her mama is good lookin as the song says. Her brother, Deputy District Attorney, Howard Gray has a massive sandy-colored Afro, olive skin, and green eyes. He is vain and his fate is signaled by Proverbs 16:18 "Pride goeth before destruction." Cinnamon is a Black woman of American-Indian ancestry. She is 'gobsmacked' by Howard and engages in magical thinking about him. Dark Chocolate is a Black woman of Nigerian ancestry. The court system may take her toddler away from her if she continues the life she's living. Class differences are a backdrop for this tale which has religious overtones that are expressed through modern songs, modern works of art, and ancient biblical passages.

Magic realism is a term that is often used to describe the fiction of such Latin American writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortazar and Jorge Luis Borges. Literary critics such as Seymour Menton have contended that it is also present in the art and literature of Germany, Italy, France and the United States after World War I. The stories in French Quarter Tales follow such a tradition by presenting unusual (and even supernatural) situations within very familiar settings. Professor Perez explores in these stories the boundaries between reality and the supernatural, love and hate, good and evil. In these tales the everyday meets the recondite and sometimes even the terrifying. Most of these postmodern short tales are left open and defy interpretation.

Lady Bug - Action Hero! is the story of a beautiful, sweet, and very strong little Lady Bug who lives in the 'forest of forever.' She is friends with a ditsy blond butterfly named Betsy, the wise old Mr. Turtle, and Jeremy the frog. Into the forest appears a tap-dancing caterpillar. Later come the ferocious fire ants! Lady Bug saves old Mr. Turtle (who cannot move fast enough) from the ants, using her Karate skills. Into the forest at twilight fly two beautiful Love Birds. They are clearly very much in love. While the forest creatures sleep, a hunter creeps in, and captures one of the Love Birds. To make matters worse, just then a wasp flies in, and heads straight towards Jeremy. Lady Bug rushes to protect him, and the Wasp, so taken aback by the courage of this little bug, breaks down in tears.. They all console her, and become fast friends. Lady Bug now has to find the lost Love Bird. She travels far and long, and finds her at last in the home of a young family who has a little girl. The little girl convinces her parents to let the Love Bird return to the forest. Lady Bug and the Love Bird fly home. There is great rejoicing. But the Hunter returns to finish the job, not realizing there is another member of the family - the Wasp! She attacks him, sending him off howling in pain. And remember the caterpillar? Well from the depths of the forest appears a fuzzy little face - it squirms and rolls around and soon we see a beautiful butterfly - a friend for Betsy. And the moral of the story? A hero can be small in size, but is always big of heart.

The text was simple that portentous Tuesday morning: "Please pray for us, we've been hit by a truck." It came from my daughter, Kristi, as I was entering the Wal-Mart there in Canon City, Colorado, where I was waiting for Rachel to arrive. We had planned to help Asher, Teresa, and her family prepare for their wedding in just four days. But, out of nowhere, a hulking Dodge Ram pickup came crashing through the driver's door, right into the delicate body of my wife. It was 10:40, the morning of November 6, 2012. Nothing could have prepared me for what lay ahead. Rachel and I had seldom talked about what it would be like to lose each other. We had filed an official will with the Griffith Law Office in International Falls, Minnesota, many years before. We had both outlined basic funeral plans as well, and she had updated hers just the year before in 2011. But to actually try to imagine what such a scenario would be like... it just wasn't something we wanted to do.

ABOUT THE BOOK In his first trip to the exotic Papua New Guinea, the tranquility and lifestyle that is in contract to the hi-tech society lingers in the memory of a family man until his "back to the nature" dream comes true. Set in the location of Papua New Guinea, this story begins as a traditional love story between two characters of different cultures. Harris finds irresistible Alma and goes astray, whereas Aalma remains firm in her tribal beliefs. By virtue of the element of sacrifice embedded in a woman, the story later develops into a real-life soap opera. You will be drawn into this story that is full of twists and unexpected turns until it climaxes in the end with a shattering revelation.

Most classic success stories go something like this: "I had nothing, but then discovered a new way of thinking, turned my life around and got everything I ever wanted…" I could tell you one such story. I went from having nothing to everything I'd ever wanted in the space of about two years-what at the time was the life of my dreams-only to discover that success wasn't what I thought it was. I couldn't identify it, but there was still something missing. Implicit in the statement "money won't buy us happiness" is the idea that something else will, even if we don't know what that something else is. This is what led me to my beyond success story-the search for what lies beyond the things I thought would make me happy... Excellent, filled with wisdom and perspective.-Dan Rather, award winning journalist and author A must read for anyone concerned with their future and the future of our world.-T. Harv Eker, author of the NY Times #1 bestseller Secrets of the Millionaire Mind The concepts in this book challenge the way we think about and approach professional and financial life, whether you are one of the many millions stepping into retirement, newly entering working life or at a crossroads.-Kathleen Murphy, former CEO, ING US Wealth Management A thought-provoking, philosophical discussion of what happiness really is and what it takes to achieve it. This is a story about every child's imagination-your imagination. It takes place in the early twentieth century about 1910. It is a fairy tale, a fantasy. However, the places are real and so are the people. The names have been altered to add a touch of mystery, or just in case someone does not like his or her character. The house is real, including the three doors. Maybe it's your house, your home town, or your family. Maybe it's your name that has been changed in our story. Even Gillo, the Troll is real. At least he was real to my youngest grandson. The only contrast to his imaginary friend, Gillo and the Gillo of our story is that his friend Gillo was just about always in trouble. When my grandson, was about Sue's age in our story (four), he came walking in the living room with peanut butter all over his face. His mom said, "Didn't I say to stay out of the peanut butter?" He immediately said, "Yes, but you don't understand; Gillo fell into the peanut butter jar, and I was just trying to get him out." Imagination is an excellent gift.

The inner-beast of one's subconscious mind, according to Sigmund Freud, however hideous and grotesque, needs, necessarily, to be made more transparent to us, or it will direct our lives and we will, wrongly, call it fate. Fear is the pain arising from the anticipation of evil, be it fear of failure or fear of success. Fear is the enemy of us all. A Werewolf In Cleveland is a tour de force exploring a character who from page one is compelled to cope with an unrelenting inner-beast that ultimately escapes into reality to destroy her life and identity. As a horror aficionado, I have been an unwitting student, for decades, of every variety of inner-beast imaginable, from vampires, rampaging lizards and underwater beasts that rip us apart with iron jaws, to aliens from distant worlds that threaten to steal our planet. I dare say that I am an expert on the inner-beast; that metaphor for fear of the unknown. "Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies," from "13 Ghosts," 1960, directed by the legendary Mr. William Castle.

Whether it be racial injustice, political unrest, climate change, starvation, or mass shootings, the world is an extremely scary place. Terry Gordon, however, likes to look at the lighter side of life, which he does in this memoir. He shares his observatoins of daily life along with a little off-the-wall sense of humour to put a smile on your face. He also shares life lessons, such as: - Take a few minutes at the end of every day to reflect on what you accomplished and think about how to make tomorrow a better day. - Each one of us can improve, whether it's through kinder words, thoughtful actions, or avoiding getting angry at others who are not having a good day or are plain ignorant. - If we all did a little to help others by listening, giving, and being respectful, the world would be a much happier place. Learning is a lifelong adventure, and if the author can learn something new every day, so can you.

This book is intended for young people and the young at heart. In this book you will learn about First Nation language and culture. It is for instructional purposes to assist the revitalization of the Halq'emlem language.Message from the IllustratorIn 1997, Stó:lõ Nation and Chilliwack School District created the First Nations Kindergarten Program at Bernard Elementary. Goals of the program included learning about Sto:lo Culture and incorporating Halq'emélylem language in everyday lessons. Language teachers were recruited from Stó:lõ Shxweli: Eunice Ned, Charlene Thomas, Bibiana Norris, Diana Charlie, Ralph Roberts, Muriel Roberts, Mona Sepass, Christine Sitting-Eagle and Mae Rae are all thanked for the hours they have spent in the classroom. When the program began, there were few Halq'eméylem teaching materials available to the classroom teacher. As such, a number of "home-made" worksheets and picture pages were developed. Under the guidance of Gwen Point these materials grew much larger collection. We attempted to encompass many of the required learning outcomes in these resources. The pages that follow have been in the use in the First Nations Kindergarten at various times throughout the past seven years. Our collection of materials is divided into ten sections for the ten teaching months (September to June). We have tried to select seasonal themes, which reflect traditional activities. Numerous black line masters are intended for ready classroom use. Worksheets, vocabulary cards, art projects, colouring pages, mini-books and other materials are included. Halq'eméylem and English are emphasised. Appendix is a complete Alphabet book for the child who is ready to begin learning letters.Thank you to the editing panel for their wise contributions. Dr. Elizabeth Herrling-Elder/Mentor who has provided the Halq'eméylem translations. Thelma Wenman, who has coordinated the workers who could complete this work. Diana Charlie organized and translated much of the work. Thank you to all of the elders who have worked tirelessly to preserve the Sto:l&otidle; Halq'eméylem Language. Thank you to Barry Harmon, School Principal, for his continued support. Thank you to Michael Audet for his continued finanacial support. Without their support this work would not have been possible.Yálh yuxw kw'as hó:yMargaret Greenwood, Artist of all the work included in the bookKindergarten Teacher - Sardis Elementary School
