    Late 1929. The Stock market crash. At MGM Studios Irving Thalberg was involved in a power struggle. Lon Chaney's contract was coming up for renewal. Tod Browning, MGM's famed director of the macbre genre for the studio, had left and signed a contract back at his home studio, Universal. Carl Laemmle Jr was made production head of Universal for his father and he wanted to do a film version of Dracula. Carl Sr. agreed, as long as they had Lon Chaney as the star. Early in August of 1930, Carl Junior, still attempting to sign Chaney for the role, ordered a treatment to be authored by Louis Bromfield. By Mid August he was teamed with screenwriter Dudley Murphy and they began work on the script. Then in the middle of the negotiations, Lon Chaney unexpected by everyone in the film industry, died on August 26th. This volume of the Atlernate History of Classic Monster Films we present the full first Bromfield treatment, the incomplete first draft screenplay by Bromfield and Murphy. In addition, when Dracula was finally produced, more in the fashion of the popular 1927 play than the Bram Stoker novel, as was intended by Laemmle for Chaney - A silent version of the Lugosi Dracula was prepared for theaters who had not yet converted to sound. We have also included a complete Title list from this version. Also included in this volume is a translated version of F.W. Murnau's shooting script for the first screen version of Dracula - filmed in Germany in 1922 and called NOSFERATU, a symphony of horror. Murnau's hand annotations are included in bold print throughout the script.

    When Dashiell Hammett's THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE made its debut over CBS in August of 1946, the series became an instant success. Howard Duff, a virtual unknown among Hollywood circles, found himself bombarded with movie offers. The early broadcasts of the series revealed a dark side of Spade: stealing money out of a dead man's wallet to sleeping with a married woman. Over time, the script writers cut down on the dark side and added an emphasis of humor. Spade's romantic relationship with his secretary Effie was more obvious.While many recordings exist from the radio broadcasts of the forties and fifties, a large percentage of the SAM SPADE programs are considered "lost" -- due to the lack of preservation. Today, fans of the program seek out those "lost" adventures, especially the earliest broadcasts that shed light on just what kind of character Sam Spade is and the explanation for the popularity during the late forties.Thanks to Bear Manor Media and editor Martin Grams Jr., this book offers reprints of thirteen scripts from THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE. It has made it possible for me to meet and work with people from all walks of the motion picture industry. It has taken me to many wonderful places around the globe. It has provided me with a career that extends from the silent days of films, called flicks, to the present era of blockbusters and high tech special effects movies.During this time, I have seen the silent films become talkies and talkies give way to surround-sound. I have seen picture shows go from black and white to color, from ten minute one-reelers to three-hour epics. I have seen film change from celluloid to digital and cameras go from hand-cranked to computerized. I have seen movies presented on a single screen enhanced by organ music give way to multiplexes and home theaters with THX. I have seen movies stars' careers rise and fall and the emphasis on celebrities in our culture. I have seen directors become as famous as their leading actors. I have seen the cost of a movie ticket go from 5 cents to over $10 and box office grosses now reported in the news along with the weather report.A lot has changed in the motion picture industry during my lifetime-good and bad-but one thing remained constant, my love of what I have done.Perhaps it was my destiny, a combination of fate and timing, an early start in the business and my adventurous attitude, that gave me an opportunity to work with some of the most talented individuals in the business and kept me an active part of the industry for so many years.But how do I share with you my story that spans nine decades?     In 1956 producer Lyle Griffin released a two-sided single record by the comedianand monologist Richard "Lord" Buckley under the futuristic title"Flight of The Saucer". Having become a cult record long since, this earlypredecessor of the later 'rap' style at least partly was a recycled version of arecording, which had already been made by Griffin in late 1946, only thatthe 'flying object' then had not been the saucer but the vout bug. Actuallyflying on this older record was legendary jazz pianist Michael "Dodo" Marmarosa,for whom "Flight of The Vout Bug" - suggesting at least verballysome kind of analogy to Rimsky-Korsakov's "Bumble Bee" - had been writtenas a miniature concertino for piano and big band. Marmarosa certainlywas not unknown then, nor is he today. Yet his many 'flights' on recordsor transcriptions from the 1940s to the 1960s - including some of SlimGaillard's humorous excursions into the language of "Vout" - have neverbeen completely documented in a comprehensive and chronological catalogue,which is the task the authors have set themselves with the presentpublication. The approach to this task is twofold: on one side is a detaileddiscographical listing of the pianist's known recorded performances andon the other an interpretative survey, which seeks to guide the listener'sear to some of the intrinsic artistic values of Marmarosa's ever-beautifuland highly personal piano style.This is the never before published discography and history of a legendary performer.
