My Peacock Tale: Secrets Of An NBC Page is a funny, sexy, gossipy, celebrity-filled memoir with real-life, never-before-told stories. Set against the backdrop of NBC Burbank in the mid-70s, the Pages had VIP access to stars ranging from Johnny Carson to Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner to Andy Kaufman, Freddie Prinze to Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, John Travolta, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Donald Trump, Johnny Cash, Harry Chapin and iconic legends including Bob Hope, Betty White, Elvis Presley, Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Alfred Hitchcock and many more. Oh, and then there's all the good sex! But, there are also stories of unwanted sexual advances made on the Pages, both men and women. The Page staff was like a show biz exclusive sorority/fraternity, and their friendships have continued for decades. The stories make this a good read for anyone hoping to enter the entertainment industry."A revealing and often delightful insider's look at the heyday of network television." - Kirkus ReviewsI think I'm safe in saying that at the age of 15, I was the youngest Page Boy ever hired at NBC in New York. My sister, actress Joann Dru, helped get my foot in the door for what turned out to be a life-changing job that started my career in the entertainment industry. Often when I was hosting The Hollywood Squares, I would see the Pages in the hallway and remember the lifelong friendships I made giving tours and ushering shows, friends including Match Game host Gene Rayburn. I think so highly of the NBC Page Program that I suggested it to my daughter, Jamie, who became a Page at NBC Burbank. Shelley's book brought back some great memories, and I read a few stories about what was happening around the studio I had never heard before.- Peter Marshall, TV Host/Boy SingerThe Hollywood SquaresI was working at NBC during this era. I left my job as a Page at another network to write questions for the game show Celebrity Sweepstakes because NBC was the place to be. Shelley and her Page colleagues reveal never-before-told stories about what took place behind the peacock curtain, bringing readers into the little-known secret society they affectionately call Pagedom. They worked with all the biggest stars in their unguarded moments, witnessing behavior that would not and should never be tolerated in the workplace. They are a show biz Band of Brothers and Sisters who have remarkably remained close friends all these decades. No wonder many of them said it was the best job they ever had.- Marc SummersTV Host, Producer, Star of Double Dare, UnwrappedI remember seeing Shelley in her little Page uniform while we were taping Wheel of Fortune. When you're starting a brand new show, you find yourself looking for faces that reflect kindness. I had two in the audience - my mother and Shelley Herman with her infectious smile. Our friendship has continued through many of life's challenges. Reading My Peacock Tale brought back fond memories of my time at NBC Burbank, and Shelley's spicy stories had me laughing and empathizing with her and what many women had to endure while building their careers. Just one question: Who's Jake?- Chaplain Susan Stafford, Ph.D.Original Hostess of Wheel of Fortune

From Ohio to Texas, from New Jersey to California . . . from small towns and big cities . . . from all walks of life we came-by railroad, by bus, by plane. Some of us "cherry picked" from our hometown dance studios; others, simply searching for more than our small towns could offer. Each of us filled with a burning desire to set foot on the New York stage. In 1936, Edna Ferber & George S. Kaufman immortalized the Rehearsal Club in their play Stage Door, later made into a Hollywood movie providing audiences with a rare glimpse into the private world of women who waited by the phone for that one call that might change their lives forever. Peek into the Club's fabled parlor at different points over the years and you might see Carol Burnett, Leigh Taylor Young, Dixie Carter, Teri Garr, Sandy Duncan, Blythe Danner, Kim Cattrall, or even James Dean-who used the Club as a hangout before he became a movie icon. What our "stars" have to say... "My closest friends today are the women I met at the Rehearsal Clubwho called me "The Captain of Room 20."-CONSTANCE McCASHIN, "Laura Avery," Knots Landing "The Rehearsal Club was a nurturing half-way house for nice girls! And boy, did I need it! I arrived in NYC fresh off-the-peach truck!"-CELIA WESTON, "Jolene Honeycutt," Alice "Well, there's one thing: they can't order me to stop dreaming."-"Cinderella," Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim "While playing 'Cinderella' (Into The Woods-Broadway, 2022), I've learned she is a teacher-how to transcend one's own self-doubts and find a path for belonging." -DIANE PHELAN, TRC 2013 Rising Star "The Rehearsal Club was a temple of talent-a wonderful idea and a great organization!" -BRIAN O'NEIL, Author, Acting As a Business: Strategies for Success, Fifth Edition "I hope there will someday be a place like the Rehearsal Club again!"-BETTY LYNN, "Thelma Lou," Andy Griffith Show

Soldier: From Script to Screen includes:An examination of the evolution of the western into a whole sub-genre of films and looks in detail behind the scenes of Soldier, one of the most obscure, overlooked, and underrated science fiction films.A discussion of Soldier's legacy and how it drew inspiration from George Steven's 1953 western, Shane. An Overview of the Career of Actor Kurt Russell. An exclusive Interview with the Oscar-nominated Screenwriter David Webb Peoples. An interview with the Oscar-nominated Production Designer David L. Snyder.Interviews with Oscar-Winning/Nominated Make-up Artists Steve LaPorte and Peter Montagna.Guest essays by John Hansen, Mark Stratton, and John Kenneth Muir.Afterword by Paul M. Sammon, the author of: Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner, Conan the Phenomenon, and The Making of Starship Troopers. And much more!"Soldier, like many great films-Citizen Kane, It's a Wonderful Life, Bonnie and Clyde-was dissed by the cognoscenti when it was first released. Danny Stewart saw it for what it was: an inspired blitzkrieg of special effects set against a dystopian nightmare, with cathartic possibilities. Featuring a career-defining performance by Kurt Russell that elevates the robotic-finally-into something human (if not super-human). Stewart puts it into the tradition of its classic forbears and makes a case for it being seen in their light. He places the part-Shane, part-Blade Runner, part-Terminator, part-Rocky, part-Unforgiven mongrel up where it belongs, in a book that never stints on research. With a plethora of interviews featuring almost everyone responsible for making it into the audio-visual smörgåsbord it turned out to be, he analyses it with the forensic skill of a surgeon, treasuring every inter-galactic frame. Buy this book!" - Aubrey Malone, author of Shane - Paramount's Classic Western

Cartoon voices of the golden age, 1930-70Volume Two of CARTOON VOICES is the massive reference companion to Volume One. This is the information for which animation enthusiasts have been waiting. Based on thirty two years of painstaking research in archives and libraries, this volume features an exhaustive listing of thousands of theatrical cartoons, containing never-before-published voice credits for hundreds of obscure acting talents who until now remained unidentified. The listings herein cover the Golden Age output and voice talent of the following major film studios: Warner Bros. (the immortal Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies), MGM (cartoons by giants like Hanna-Barbera and Tex Avery), Columbia (the often oddball Screen Gems cartoons), UPA (home of Mister Magoo), Universal (the Walter Lantz Cartunes), Walt Disney Productions (both shorts and feature-length films of the Golden Age supervised by Walt), and from New York & Miami, Paramount's releases of the great Max Fleischer cartoons. While various vintage cartoon voice mysteries are still to be solved, the one-of-a-kind information in this volume finally confirms hundreds of hitherto uncredited voice artists for the first time in decades.Keith Scott has spent over forty years as an internationally recognized cartoon voice actor and impressionist. He narrated two George of the Jungle movies, and was the voice of both Bullwinkle J. Moose and the Narrator in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. He is the author of The Moose That Roared and many articles on animation and Hollywood radio history.

1000 Vampires on Screen is a truly unique collection written by award-winning author and vampire-genre expert Simon Bacon that in two packed volumes covers the history of vampires on film and television. Looking at examples, from Nosferatu to Duckula, Blacula to Twilight, and Dark Shadows to True Blood the story of the screen vampire from its first appearance on film is told from the perspective of the vampire itself, charting its journey from a hideous, devilish monster through to romantic lead and even as aspirational role model. It is a trip that takes us around the globe, to countries in every continent, and even some places in outer space, encompassing bloodsuckers, energy-drinkers, soul-takers, life-absorbers, body-copiers, man-eating-plants, possessed objects, sexoholics, eternal lovers, and vegetarian vampires, to name but a few. Further to this, the two volumes of 1000 Vampires on Screen also features 30+ exclusive interviews with the writers, directors, and actors that have brought these undead creatures to life. Jim Wynorski, Henry Rollins, Robert Bierman, Debbie Rochon, Neil Jordan, Anna Silk, Doug Jones, Leonor Varella, Catherine Hardwicke, and James Woods amongst many others discuss what glamoured them about the vampire, how they became them on screen, and why, so many of them, returned to its embrace again and again. Many of them also share exclusive and personal onset photographs, design images, and publicity shots to give new perspectives on themselves and on the vampires they created. All of this is supported by cross-reference notes on all the entries and extensive Film, and Actor and Director Indexes making 1000 Vampires on Screen not only an indispensable reference tool for professionals and enthusiasts alike, but one of the most inventive and important books on the vampire genre of 2023.1000 Vampires offers a delectable buffet of screen vampires, full of prime cuts and rare meats. It ranges from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein to Zoltan, Hound of Dracula, via vamps both famous and obscure and from the first flickers of celluloid to the latest undead streaming shows from around the world. He immerses the reader into one of the major realms through which vampires in all their diversity take up residence in our mundane existence, enlarge our consciousness, and drive boredom from day-to-day routines. The Adler Book of Puzzles and Riddles, aka today's Peggy's Puzzles Volume One - Part OneHot off the press, from the author of Pallenberg Wonder Bears - From the Beginning, Peggy's Puzzles - Volume One, Written and Illustrated by Peggy Adler. In many fields of accomplishment there is one name that stands out above all the rest. In baseball, there's the home-run king Babe Ruth. In invention, there's Thomas Edison. In composing military marches it's John Philip Sousa. And in the invention of puzzles - it's Sam Loyd. Sam Loyd was born in Philadelphia in 1841. He began his brilliant career at the age of 14 and his puzzles were eventually published in newspapers and magazines all over the United States. After he died in 1911, his son, Sam Loyd, Jr., continued the puzzle columns under his father's name. In 1914, Sam Loyd, Jr. published 5000 of their puzzles under the title, Cyclopedia of Sam Loyd Puzzles. Peggy's Puzzle - Volume One is divided into four distinct parts. Part One, is comprised of revised Sam Loyd puzzles that are suitable for children as well as adults and were in Peggy Adler's original puzzle book, The Adler Book of Puzzles and Riddles, published in 1962 by New York's John Day Company. At that time, the New York Times called the book "A great wit-sharpener for the whole family". And today, it still is just that, for the puzzles and their illustrations remain the same. Only the names of the characters that populate the puzzles have been changed in this edition to reflect Adler's love of Old Time Radio, Movies and TV. Part Two of the book is filled with brand new mathematical games and puzzles, created by Adler for the 1963 sequel to her 1962 book and Part Three, of Geography Puzzles from Adler's 1979 book of that name. And just as in Part One, the names of the puzzles' characters have all been changed to reflect her love of Old Time Radio, Movies and TV. Last, but certainly not least, is the book's Part Four, Games My Father Taught Me, which is comprised of recreational, mathematical games Adler learned as a child from her late father, renowned, prolific author and mathematician, Irving Adler. Sixty years later, this book is still a great wit-sharpener for the whole family. An introvert by nature, Robert Young found that he could overcome his shyness by taking on other personalities when he performed with his high school's drama group. Further schooling in theatre arts at the Pasadena Playhouse, where he appeared in many productions, led to a screen test and a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Louis B. Mayer, the top man at MGM, said, "Young has no sex appeal." Yet during his years with the studio Robert starred in dozens of films and had prime supporting roles in many others. After leaving MGM to freelance for several years, he branched out into radio and starred on the popular series Father Knows Best. He then repeated his parental role in its television adaptation, followed by Marcus Welby, M.D., both highly acclaimed series for which he won several awards. But for most of his adult years, unknown to all but his family and some close friends, Robert suffered from a chronic illness-one that almost killed him. Supported by his beloved wife Elizabeth, he persevered, entertaining millions of moviegoers, radio listeners, and television viewers well into his senior years. Troubles and Triumphs is his story.

Ted Ray became a star as British Music Hall came to an end, and continued into radio, television and motion pictures. He never stopped performing on stage as Music Hall morphed into Variety, and could always be relied upon to make audiences laugh with his quick wit and rapid-fire humor. It might be said that it was on radio with Ray's a Laugh that he became a star throughout the U.K., but, in reality, he had appeared as a Music Hall comedian in just about every city in the country. Just a Regular Bloke documents Ted Ray's career, and also examines the work of his two sons, Robin and Andrew, who became a star in his own right with his first film, The Mudlark. It is an informative and entertaining volume that should appeal to readers interested not only in British stand-up comedy in the 20th Century but also with the development of British popular culture.

Trans woman and screenwriter Tilly Bridges takes you through the trans allegories of the Matrix franchise, with deep dives into The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Animatrix, The Matrix Revolutions, and The Matrix Resurrections, tracking one person's transition journey - from Thomas Anderson, to Neo... to Trinity. Each movie's allegory is deeply layered, building from movie to movie, and speaks to a different aspect of trans existence. You'll learn how color is used to convey more than you realize, how Neo's psyche is personified in the people around him, how no other mass media franchise speaks as truly, deeply, and honestly to the trans experience, and exactly why these movies are beloved and vital to the trans community (and their cis allies). Free your mind, and see just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Second Edition "Here we come. Walking down the street. We get the funniest looks from everyone we meet. Hey, hey, we're The Monkees!" The idea of creating a tv series about a wacky rock group similar to The Beatles had been unsuccessfully kicked around Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures since 1962, but by 1965, The Beatles were on their second tour, and their Help! album, single, and tour created a popularity wave called Beatlemania. The enormous success of their A Hard Day's Night album and single convinced Screen Gems to green light the tv series idea, and The Monkees were born. A fake band seemed odd in the real world still reeling from race riots, John F. Kennedy's assassination, and the Vietnam War, but delightful Davy Jones, peppy Peter Tork, madcap Micky Dolenz, and comparatively serious Michael Nesmith were too busy singing to bring anybody down. Fake became steak by late 1966, and with help from super musicians Tommy Boyce, Bobby Bart, Neil Diamond, Chip Douglas, Carole King, John Stewart, and others, the series skyrocketed to hit status along with #1 music albums and hit singles, such as "The Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone," and "I'm a Believer." Authors Michael A. Ventrella and Mark Arnold now analyze all The Monkee's songs and albums produced over 50 years. Discover the band's detailed history, a listing of all live performances and TV appearances, and a listing of all of their singles and albums that made the Billboard charts. Come and watch them sing and play. Discover the secrets of their recordings: which of The Monkees played what instruments on each song, when it was recorded, how well that song did on the charts, whether there were any interesting cover versions of the song done, and when it first appeared on a record.
