  • av Dr Andrea Oskis
    267

There is no better way to understand ourselves and our relationships with others than through what we eat. What does food tell us about love? For psychoanalytic therapist Andrea Oskis, the deeply personal stories her patients share with her and that tell her the most about them are not those about narcissist mothers, neglectful fathers or rivaling siblings. The stories that are the most revealing are their food stories.Because food really is the food of love. Food and attachment are entwined from day one; the first bond we make as a tiny human being is to the person who feeds us. And as Oskis demonstrates, if we cannot find feelings of comfort or security in food, we tend not to find them in relationships either. In The Kitchen Shrink, Oskis uncovers what has caused Christy to eat the same lunch for 30 years; how Rachele used hot sauce as a weapon when she found out her husband had cheated on her; why Andrea herself changed the way she cooked after she lost her baby, her food of love reduced to her food of loss. The Kitchen Shrink is about the two things we can't live without: food and each other. It shows how our understanding of our personal relationship with food can guide us towards having stronger connections, and help us love and be loved better, forever.

"Targeting an important gap in design history, Another Modernism sheds light on the unacknowledged contribution of home economists to 20th-century modernist design. In analysing the home economists' conception of space, the book argues that their focus on the user's tactility constituted an alternative model of modern architecture - a popular and largely rural modernism which focused on the specificity of the female user and her personal experience of the domestic interior. Based on little-known archival material, and with an emphasis on (mostly) female researchers and users/occupants, Another Modernism will appeal to architects, design historians, and anyone interested in gender, women, and disability studies"--

This volume explores ethical aspects relating to claims for mitigation arising from culpable state action (or inaction). It answers the important and controversial question: to what extent should the state mitigate sentencing for defendants who have been victims of state misconduct? The volume explores the normative justifications for mitigation and answers many intriguing questions. For example, in terms of the procedural challenges, should the offender have to prove a causal link between state wrongdoing or neglect and the offending? Can a court take judicial notice of state-induced social adversity and apply this consideration to all affected offenders? Other questions relate to the implications for courts and sentencing commissions which issue guidance to courts regarding mitigation at sentencing. To what extent is the offender less culpable as a result of state misconduct, and what are the limits of any resulting sentence reductions? Do sentence reductions for state misconduct undermine proportionality, or deprecate the seriousness of the impact on the victim of crime? Should this factor be included in any sentencing guidelines or possibly even as a statutory mitigating factor? Each contribution explores a distinct, cross-jurisdictional claim for mitigation on the basis of State negligence or misconduct towards the offender. The chapters all address the appropriate response of courts at sentencing.

This innovative open access book reappraises the health resort in literature from its rise in the late Enlightenment period to the wellness age of the 21st century. Most of the existing body of academic work on the subject is concerned with either the classic spa novel or sanatorium narratives, and focuses on distinct national literatures, selected canonical texts, and particular themes. Contrary to this convention The Health Resort in Modern European Literature covers all types of health resort texts and sees them as part of a "transnational resort narrative" that covers the whole of Europe. Its uniquely broad corpus goes beyond the famous English, French, German and Russian novels and includes work in all genres, by female and male authors, from high literature and popular culture, in less studied languages such as Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Polish, Swedish or Ukrainian, right up to the present day. Drawing on theorists such as Barthes, Deleuze and Foucault, Henrike Schmidt and Astrid Köhler compellingly argue that the literary health resort represents a social microcosm that responds to and reflects historical developments in special ways. Being an 'other place' where time and space are configured differently, it has both utopian and dystopian potential, while its intertextual interconnectedness enables it to interrogate assumptions and discourses not just about sickness and health, but also about European society in its different iterations. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA).
