"Targeting an important gap in design history, Another Modernism sheds light on the unacknowledged contribution of home economists to 20th-century modernist design. In analysing the home economists' conception of space, the book argues that their focus on the user's tactility constituted an alternative model of modern architecture - a popular and largely rural modernism which focused on the specificity of the female user and her personal experience of the domestic interior. Based on little-known archival material, and with an emphasis on (mostly) female researchers and users/occupants, Another Modernism will appeal to architects, design historians, and anyone interested in gender, women, and disability studies"--

This volume explores ethical aspects relating to claims for mitigation arising from culpable state action (or inaction). It answers the important and controversial question: to what extent should the state mitigate sentencing for defendants who have been victims of state misconduct? The volume explores the normative justifications for mitigation and answers many intriguing questions. For example, in terms of the procedural challenges, should the offender have to prove a causal link between state wrongdoing or neglect and the offending? Can a court take judicial notice of state-induced social adversity and apply this consideration to all affected offenders? Other questions relate to the implications for courts and sentencing commissions which issue guidance to courts regarding mitigation at sentencing. To what extent is the offender less culpable as a result of state misconduct, and what are the limits of any resulting sentence reductions? Do sentence reductions for state misconduct undermine proportionality, or deprecate the seriousness of the impact on the victim of crime? Should this factor be included in any sentencing guidelines or possibly even as a statutory mitigating factor? Each contribution explores a distinct, cross-jurisdictional claim for mitigation on the basis of State negligence or misconduct towards the offender. The chapters all address the appropriate response of courts at sentencing.

Combining architectural and social history, this open access book tells for the first time the in-depth story of Scotland's new towns. One of the most significant episodes in modern architectural, urban and social history, Scotland's postwar new towns offered new housing, new ways of life and new jobs. Begun between the late 1940s and the late 1960s, the new towns - East Kilbride, Glenrothes, Cumbernauld, Livingston and Irvine - were a key element of the planned Welfare State, attracting international attention and widespread publicity. These were places of architectural innovation, and economic and social change.Building Modern Scotland tells a new history of the new towns, combining architectural and social history to illustrate what was planned, what was built, and how these places were experienced by the communities who lived and worked in them. It positions the new towns at the heart of modern Scottish history, showing how they represented an ambition to make a modern, transformed nation. The book surveys each new town's planning and design before turning to key topics such as housing, family life, work and opportunity, and community. Drawing on archives and oral history, the book will appeal to historians of modern architecture and design as well as readers interested in modern social history. It provides a new account of modern Scotland, its buildings, places and people, and argues that a better understanding of the new towns' history and value should inform present-day decision-making.The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This innovative open access book reappraises the health resort in literature from its rise in the late Enlightenment period to the wellness age of the 21st century. Most of the existing body of academic work on the subject is concerned with either the classic spa novel or sanatorium narratives, and focuses on distinct national literatures, selected canonical texts, and particular themes. Contrary to this convention The Health Resort in Modern European Literature covers all types of health resort texts and sees them as part of a "transnational resort narrative" that covers the whole of Europe. Its uniquely broad corpus goes beyond the famous English, French, German and Russian novels and includes work in all genres, by female and male authors, from high literature and popular culture, in less studied languages such as Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Polish, Swedish or Ukrainian, right up to the present day. Drawing on theorists such as Barthes, Deleuze and Foucault, Henrike Schmidt and Astrid Köhler compellingly argue that the literary health resort represents a social microcosm that responds to and reflects historical developments in special ways. Being an 'other place' where time and space are configured differently, it has both utopian and dystopian potential, while its intertextual interconnectedness enables it to interrogate assumptions and discourses not just about sickness and health, but also about European society in its different iterations. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA).

In four volumes, the classic A Grammar of New Testament Greek covers every aspect of the Greek language in the New Testament. The authors' innovative and thought-provoking analysis is supplemented by a multitude of invaluable charts and indices, and continues to act as an invaluable resource for advanced students of New Testament Greek today. This new edition includes an introduction by Stanley E. Porter, one of the leading scholars of New Testament Greek, who provides critical reflection on the style and approach used in this classic work, as well as a discussion of developments in the study of New Testament Greek over the last 40 years. Volume 3: Syntax focuses on the construction of a sentence. Divided into two parts, it begins with a detailed discussion of nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and pronouns, to give the reader a clear and comprehensive understanding of the individual elements making up the language. Part two concerns the complete sentence and its syntax, featuring sections on the ordinary simple sentence and its construction and on different types of sentences and their varying structures.
