  • - The Fatal Legacy of Adam Smith and the Rehabilitation of John Maynard Keynes
    av Vernon Routley
    336,-

After studying economics, Vernon Routley spent most of his working life within the bureaucracy. Although initially appointed because of his economic qualifications, he spent most of his early career engaged in the administrative minutiae which characterises all large organisations. Ultimately rising through the ranks to the senior echelons of the Australian Commonwealth Public Service, he experienced at first hand the ongoing conflict between sound economic principles and short-term political expediency which bedevils all democratic societies. On reaching retirement age he was thankfully able to abandon this intellectually frustrating situation and to devote himself to outdoor interests mostly related to the environment and its conservation. His interest in economic affairs was revived by the Global Financial Crisis and in particular by the failure of conventional economic policies to reduce unemployment and underemployment. This has led him to question the basic assumptions underlying modern-day economic theory.

  • - A shared journey through loss and grief
    av S J Wynne-Hughes
    300,-

Grieving for my husband Michael after his suicide allowed past life traumas of disappearance, heartbreak and death to resurface. The compounding effect of grief helped with my struggle to make sense of the loss of missing Michael. My journey sent me on a path to explore whether grief is the price you pay for love and if sorrow is the price you pay for loss of love. Etching my silhouette and embracing vulnerability helped my discovery of the myth of closure as a step in the experience of grief. Could vulnerability be empowering and did self-knowledge present opportunities for enrichment and growth for a changed individual - with sorrow as a life partner? My career choice of Corrections (adult prisons) revealed the importance of a sense of belonging through connections with others, and acceptance of imperfections, as stepping stones for recovery and renewal. Some insights about living with aloneness may resonate with others where loss has crept into their lives. A sense of belonging through friendship and close connections in a kind and caring community has been my way forward. Reaction to loss of love is an individual journey. Vulnerability can be a strength and an opportunity to seek support. The author's career choice provided humbling insights that connections with others can give purpose and meaning in our lives. Accepting sorrow as a life partner is a way to cherish memories of loss. Closure, as a step in the grief process, is a myth. Mandatory reporting is needed to prevent access to guns. My grief has softened into sorrow that lives in a pocket in my body.

  • av Colin Beames
    626,-

The alignment of business and workforce strategies is a hot topic in the HR and business domain. Many HR thought leaders and HR professionals have identified this as a key issue for those seeking to extract maximum value from their most important intangible asset - their people. This book provides a road map for those seeking to achieve this alignment. It firstly explains what is meant by a workforce strategy, as opposed to workforce planning. Then a three layered model of organisational critical capabilities, core competencies and individual job competencies of the firm is introduced from which the strategy of the business can best be conceived. The focus is then on strengthening these capabilities and competencies by identifying their underpinning key drivers. These drivers are in turn integrated with a new skills' based approach to segmenting the workforce, analysing and differentiating roles, including the identification of critical roles. Limitations in the traditional approach to segmenting the workforce on a hierarchical/job level basis and job evaluation are exposed. Those roles that are more closely linked to these key drivers then assume greater importance and focus (including associated levels of investment) in order to maximise the performance of people in those roles. Other themes that are addressed in this book include workforce configuration, outsourcing, psychological contracts, engagement and retention, brand and Employment Value Propositions, measurement and reporting of HR data (including workforce analytics). • av Dj Dromgold
    286,-

Projects and programs are the way organizations create, build and introduce new products and services. In fact, up to 40% of organizational budgets are used for projects. Yet the very people who want the project and program delivered are often disappointed with the outcome, while the project and program managers and directors most often report the project as a success. Med evolv is in a high tech industry but the challenges they face are the same as those faced by project and program managers and the people depending on them for their outcome across many industries and organizations. Join Blake, Riley, and the team as they work through some of these challenges. And learn from Marguerite as she draws on experience, insight and research to guide the Med evolv team to success. Realizing how important projects and programs are to organizations, DJ has one goal, to stamp out the disconnect between the definition of success held by project and program people and the people they serve. That's step one to solving the project and program failure problem. DJ runs RNC Global Projects, a global project and program delivery organization with numbers of blue chip and earlier stage clients. RNC specializes in recovering and delivering projects and programs that are red or nearly red. DJ is a regular speaker at conferences and industry"

  • - The Great War Letters of Captain Nigel Boulton R.A.M.C. and Lieut Stephen Boulton, A.I.F.

    360,-

Two brothers. Different armies When war broke out in August 1914, University of Sydney medical graduate Nigel Boulton was training as a paediatrician in London and he promptly joined the Royal Army Medical Corps of the British Expeditionary Force. Back in Sydney, his younger brother Stephen left the Commonwealth Bank's head office in January 1915 to enlist as an Artillery Gunner with the Australian Imperial Force. Two national identities Both men were born in Australia of English parents. Both attended the British Orphan Asylum at Slough in England and The King's School at Parramatta in Australia. Which country was home? Two distinct voices Anglophile Nigel (Dearest Mother) has a strategic and medical view of the war. Aussie Stephen (My dear Matee) tells his day-to-day story of front-line artillery life, the ravages of dysentery and the trials of artillery officer training at Lord's in London as he progresses to the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. An overview of 1914-1918 The Boulton brothers' letters to their widowed mother living in Sydney sweep from the outbreak of hostilities in Europe through Egypt and Gallipoli to Pozieres and other major artillery battles on the Western Front, to the withdrawal of Australian troops in early October 1918, to the occupation forces entering Germany in December 1918. A lesson for us in the practice of gratitude It's rare to find a set of letters like these. The story of the Boulton brothers in the service of their country will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Six more hours would have changed everything. Author Biography: Louise Wilson has a passion for history, mystery and romance, so no-one has ever needed to tell her to 'Go and get yourself a life'. Born and raised in the northern beaches area of Sydney, she's lived in two Australian country towns (Dubbo and Yea), Papua New Guinea, London and Hong Kong before settling in Melbourne. She's been a high school mathematics teacher, an agricultural economist, a management information specialist, the manager of a foreign exchange department and a director of a merchant bank. She's also volunteered with many community groups with a focus on education. She often helps her daughter who has two sets of twins born 14 months apart. Now she's come full circle, back to exploring an old love of history dating from her high school days. Intrigued by Australian history, she's discovered some fascinating forebears who've helped create that history, including 'Robert Forrester, First Fleeter'. He's the subject of one of her three acclaimed books about early convict settlers of the beautiful Hawkesbury district near Sydney. All three books have received awards from the independent judges of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies (AIGS). Louise loves to bring new aspects of her country's history to life, as she's done with her latest book 'Brothers in Arms'. It's based on the valuable and unique WW1 correspondence of two brothers in different armies, Australian and British, plus her own trademark meticulous research. The result is an emotionally-engaging start-to-finish story of the Great War, not to be missed by the general reader and the specialist historian."
