Excavating Classical Culture - Recent Archaeological Discoveries in Greece, the first volume in Studies in Classical Archaeology, publishes more than twenty papers on recent work in Greece from a remarkable, in some respects unique, meeting of archaeologists, which took place in Somerville College, University of Oxford, in March 2001. Recent archaeological activity in Greece has yielded a wealth of material enhancing our knowledge of classical Greece. The colloquium was the first collective presentation of these finds in the United Kingdom offering a rare opportunity for scholars to acquaint themselves with the recent discoveries. The papers draw on first-hand material provided by prominent scholars who are currently working on archaeological sites in Greece.

This volume reports on a series of excavations by A R Hands and Cotswold Archaeology that investigated the settlement that developed around the road between the later 1st century and the mid 2nd century, reviving for a short duration in the early 4th century.

This study examines the development of the imperial cult of Rome in Athens during the reigns of Augustus and the Julio-Claudian emperors. Based on ethnographic evidence, Fernando Lozano's study examines the social, political and economic context in which the imperial cult was introduced and accepted by the Athenians.

This study is concerned with the analysis of pottery collected during the excavation campaigns conducted by the Swiss Institute of Rome in the domus Tiberiana between 1984 and 1987, as well as with the archaeological context from which they originated. This work is composed of four parts. The first discusses the monument itself and describes the framework in which the research took place; the second part concerns the stratigraphy, its analysis, its interpretation and the presentation of the pottery strictly tied to its archaeological context; the third part is more specifically concerned with the pottery itself. The fourth and last part consists of a catalogue accompanied by plates that present the objects according to period.

This is the keenly awaited third of a projected five volumes, presenting the results of excavations carried out at the Nubian site of Meinarti in 1963 and 1964. (Before its inundation, Meinarti was a low-lying alluvial island situated at the foot of the Second Nile Cataract, about 10km to the south of the town of Wadi Halfa.) The present volume carries the story forward through Late and Terminal Christian periods (Phases 5 and 6), and up to the final abandonment of the site around AD 1600. This accomplished series of reports is designed very much as a work of reference, and is consequently highly user-friendly, with each section presented as a self-contained study.
