  • - The Mechanics of Good Writing
    av Corey Frost
    396,-

For many years, the coverage of grammar and usage in The Broadview Guide to Writing has received particular praise. Now, for the first time, that material is made available in a stand-alone volume. Readable, reliable, and comprehensive, The Broadview Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation is appropriate for students at all post-secondary levels. The book is divided into four sections. The Grammar section provides unrivalled coverage of complete and incomplete sentences, dangling constructions, and other subjects that give many writers special difficulty. The Usage section offers sensible and up-to-date advice on hundreds of points that frequently cause confusion. The Punctuation section provides a wealth of helpful guidance on all aspects of punctuation, with particular attention paid to such vexed questions as when to use the colon and the semi-colon, and (when using quotation marks) how to properly integrate quotations into one's own text. A final section, English as an Additional Language, gives a wide range of helpful advice on special issues that may arise for those whose native language is not English. A companion website provides hundreds of exercises on every topic covered in the book itself. Many of these are interactive; on completing an exercise, students are told how they did--and explanations are provided as to why the right answers are right and the wrong answers are wrong. This book is adapted from The Broadview Guide to Writing, which is available in American and Canadian editions

    av Joseph Black
    1 140,-

The two-volume Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Concise Edition provides an attractive alternative to the full six-volume anthology. Though much more compact, the concise edition nevertheless provides a thoughtful balance between well-established canonical authors and a diverse array of lesser-known works. Guided by the latest scholarship in British literary studies, the anthology is committed to inclusiveness, social responsibility, and contextualization. The anthology skillfully balances the representation of widely-agreed upon major works with a thoroughgoing reassessment of the canon that emphasizes diversity, variety, and breadth. With an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, the concise edition of this acclaimed Broadview anthology provides focused yet wide-ranging coverage for British literature survey courses. Among the works now included for the first time in the bound book of the concise edition are poems by Gwerful Mechain, selections from Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, Samson Occom's autobiography, and selections from Samuel Richardson's Pamela and Frances Burney's Evelina. New to the Concise Edition are a selection from The Táin, Mary Rowlandson's complete narrative, Aphra Behn's The Rover, selections from Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews, substantial selections from Ottobah Cugoano's Thoughts and Sentiments, and an omnibus section on the environment in the early modern period. Also new to the website are additional tales from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in facing-column format, with versions in modern English included opposite the original text.

  • - Understanding the Problems
    av Adam Briggle
    446,-

This book is a guide for understanding climate change. It takes an interdisciplinary approach because climate change is simultaneously a matter of science, engineering, economics, politics, culture, ethics, and more. A Field Guide to Climate Change thus follows the contours of climate change as it appears in the world--as a tangle of problems. Briggle presents climate literacy as a form of problem-posing by offering a set of tools for understanding how problems get framed, debated, and resolved. Through developing climate literacy, students gain the ability to think critically about how facts are constructed and mobilized in the pursuit of values. Part One (Big Picture and Fundamentals) provides basic definitions and broad orientation by situating climate change within larger contexts like the Anthropocene, international climate diplomacy, sustainable development, and "green growth." Part Two (Climate Sciences) offers tools for understanding climate science, its historical development, and its place in society by asking: who knows, what do we know, and how do we know it? Part Three (Politics, Ethics, and Policy) shows how to analyze debates about climate change policies from mitigation to rewilding.

  • av Henrik Ibsen
    300,-

This edition of one of the Western canon's most iconic plays brings back into print the pivotal 1890 translation by William Archer. It was this translation that was largely responsible for the huge impact that A Doll's House had in the English-speaking world, igniting as it did, in the words of one critic, "a firestorm of critical debate and dissent" about marriage and women's rights. Accompanying the comprehensively annotated text of the play is a substantial introduction that combines critical analysis with biographical and historical context. An extensive series of appendices provides extracts from contemporary adaptations of A Doll's House; writings by William Archer and Bernard Shaw about the play; reviews of early productions in London, New York, Montreal, and Sydney; contemporary documents relating to Ibsen and feminism; and views of actresses on playing the role of Nora.

  • av Niccolò Machiavelli
    256,-

Provocative, brutally honest, and timeless, Machiavelli's The Prince is one of the most important yet misunderstood writings in history. In it, Machiavelli lays bare the reality behind politics as it has always been practiced, teaching leaders to avoid the errors and failings of others while also educating those outside of government about what goes on inside the halls of power. This edition offers a new and lively translation of The Prince, written in fluid modern English that is impressively accurate to the original source. It also includes extensive selections from the Discourses on Livy, together with a range of Machiavelli's other works such as his poetry, his personal correspondence, and the Florentine Histories. The supplemental readings, engaging original introduction, and thorough annotations provided in this edition show the relevance of The Prince to a wide range of themes: human nature, the philosophy of history, and the existential question all rulers face--how to survive in a world that is largely outside of one's control.

  • av Leo Tolstoy
    280,-

Based on historical events, Tolstoy's beloved final novella tells the story of the rebel leader Hadji Murat--whom Tolstoy described as "the leading daredevil of the Caucasus"--and of the precarious alliance he forged with his enemies during his final days. Set during the Russian conquest of the Caucasus in the 1850s and expressing empathy for the resistance of the native peoples of Dagestan and Chechnya, Hadji Murat raises significant questions of power, imperialism, and betrayal, and remains moving and relevant today. This richly annotated edition features a selection of illuminating background materials that help situate the novella in its historical and literary context.

  • av Ann Radcliffe
    316,-

Adeline, the protagonist of Ann Radcliffe's The Romance of the Forest, became a model for later Gothic heroines. Passionate, imaginative, and sensitive, in the course of the novel she travels rapidly through the forests and Gothic ruins of France, pursued by the villain de Montfort and perpetually threatened by what appear to be supernatural events. The publication of The Romance of the Forest in 1791 had a significant impact on Radcliffe's career and on the rise of what would be known as the Gothic novel. The novel was widely praised upon publication and became a measure of quality against which all her future novels were gauged. Along with critical praise, The Romance of the Forest found an enthusiastic general audience and opened the new genre of Gothic Romance to a wider range of readers. The extensive historical appendices provide material on the novel's contemporary reception, the Gothic novel, sensibility and sentiment, and the aesthetics of the sublime and picturesque.

Considering the composition classroom as a mad scientist's laboratory, The Mad Scientist's Guide to Composition introduces different kinds of writing as experiments. Writing an essay is a task that can strike fear into a student's heart, but performing an experiment licenses creativity and doesn't presume that one knows the outcome from the start. The Mad Scientist's Guide covers the kinds of writing most often required on college campuses, while also addressing important steps and activities frequently overlooked in composition guides, such as revision and peer reviewing. Actual examples of student writing are included throughout, as are helpful reminders and tips to help students polish their skills. Above all, the Mad Scientist's Guide seeks to make writing fun. The book briefly covers up-to-date MLA, APA, and Chicago citation styles.

  • av Penelope Aubin
    336,-

This is the first ever critical edition of Penelope Aubin's The Noble Slaves, a novel that shows women as both moral exemplars and independent adventurers in foreign lands. Its tales of seduction, imprisonment, and escape engage with contemporary debates about arbitrary authority and slavery--particularly in relation to the lives of women. In one brief and fast-paced novel, Aubin brings together the aristocratic romance and the world of trade with the themes of empire and colonialism. Sometimes assessed as a pious conservative or a popular sensationalist, Aubin used fiction as a vehicle for addressing the deepest moral and political concerns of her time, and The Noble Slaves will allow new readers to understand her importance to the history of the novel. The appendices to this Broadview Edition include contemporary fiction and historical documents on slavery, piracy, and Orientalism.

  • av Penelope Aubin
    350,-

The prose fiction of Penelope Aubin offers a delightful and provocative challenge to many of our standard ways of thinking about both the "rise of the novel" and early women writers. Aubin's fast-paced narratives highlight the persistence and vitality of romance as a form of storytelling and the centrality of teenaged girls to tales that extend far beyond the domestic and amatory modes with which they have traditionally been associated. Aubin's resourceful heroines and the often spectacular violence they engage in in order to defend their lives and bodily integrity allow us a more expansive and exciting view of early-eighteenth-century fiction than the current classroom canon often permits. In narratives spanning the globe and featuring pirates, North African corsairs, Jacobites, shipwrecks, and seraglios, Aubin delivers fiction with roots that go back to antiquity and commitments that feel far more modern than most other texts from the period. Supplementary materials include selections from Aubin's other work in which she reflects upon her craft and the two documents most responsible for the posthumous distortion of her reputation.

  • av Friedrich Nietzsche
    256,-

On the Genealogy of Morality is a history of ethics, a text about interpreting that history, and a primer on interpretation in general. It also has elements of archaeology, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and etymology. Nietzsche's history-based approach to the development of morality, as well as his keen understanding of how power relations--especially the role played in this process by social, class, and racial divisions--continue to shape our ethical norms and standards of behavior. His reading of history and the human capacity for rationalization anticipated, influenced, and underpinned the interpretative techniques and strategies that emerged as dominant in the humanities and social sciences over the past several decades. In this age of "alternative truths," Nietzsche's insight into the nature of interpretation is more valuable than ever before.

  • av John Milton
    270,-

Reviled as a regicide, isolated in a personal darkness, and aging, John Milton did not relinquish his voice. He somehow used that tireless voice, rather, to create Paradise Lost, one of the enduring masterpieces of English literature. Despite its difficulties--idiosyncratic syntax, densely packed ideas, capacious structure, and epic form--the poem still has the power to dislodge modern readers from our ordinary habits of reading and push us to experience new perspectives and new ideas. This new edition, based on the 1674 text, guides readers through the poem's interpretive challenges with a compact but thorough introduction and a readable and helpfully annotated text. Illuminating contextual materials, including related works by Milton, classical and biblical sources, material on the composition of the poem, and illustrations of Paradise Lost from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, are also included.

How to Think Critically begins with the premise that we are all, every day, engaged in critical thinking. But just as we may develop bad habits in daily life if we don't scrutinize our practices, so are we apt to develop bad habits in critical thinking if we are careless in our reasoning. Readers are presented with a traditional step-by-step method for analysis that can be applied to all argument forms. Hundreds of exercises (with solutions) are included, as are several random statement generators that can be used to create thousands of additional examples. Truth tables, Venn diagrams, and other essential concepts are introduced not merely as objects for academic study but also as tools for better thinking and living. At a time when the value of critical thinking is recognized to be greater than ever, this book is an important resource both inside and outside the classroom.

  • av Sidney I Dobrin
    336,-

AI and Writing is an introduction to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and its emergent role as a tool for academic, professional, civic, and personal writing. Sid Dobrin examines GenAI from two perspectives: the conceptual and the applied. The conceptual approach addresses the function of GenAI and the ramifications of its use as a writing tool - especially the ethical, social, and material issues it raises. The applied approach offers guidance to assist readers in using GenAI responsibly and authentically. In consideration of the rapid evolution of GenAI and the many unsettled questions about its role, Dobrin leaves room for readers to adapt to shifting technological and institutional conventions. This book is intended for composition and writing-intensive courses, and for any readers with a general or professional interest in the role of GenAI in writing. While it is primarily designed for first-year writing courses, it's also applicable to courses in advanced writing, professional writing, technical writing, business writing, and writing across the curriculum, as well as writing-intensive courses in other disciplines. In other words, it can be used in any course in which students are required to produce texts.

  • av Fanny Fern
    256,-

Fanny Fern dominated the New York literary scene in the 1850s, garnering both esteem and, occasionally, derision for her witty and acerbic newspaper columns and literary criticism; her semi-autobiographical novel Ruth Hall, which traces the rise of an intelligent and determined young woman from poverty to prestige through her pursuit of a writing career, was one of America's most significant early bestsellers. Fern's use of informal, vibrantly conversational prose and her abundant colloquialisms marked an important shift in the established literary conventions of nineteenth-century fiction and journalism. This compact edition collects some of Fern's most frequently taught journalism--much of which focuses on the changing roles of women in nineteenth-century America--along with excerpts from Ruth Hall. This volume is one of a number of editions that have been drawn from the pages of the acclaimed Broadview Anthology of American Literature. The series is designed to make selections from the anthology available in a format convenient for use in a wide variety of contexts; each edition features an introduction and exaplanatory footnotes, and is designed to meet the needs of today's students.

  • av Washington Irving
    276,-

Two of Washington Irving's works of short fiction from his 1819-20 work, The Sketch Book--Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow--are among the most enduringly popular of American classics. In his own day, Irving's works were widely read in Britain as well as in America; the English novelist William Makepiece Thackeray described him as "the first ambassador whom the New World of Letters sent to the Old." This edition takes notice of transatlantic literary history with an appendix of reviews from American and British newspapers, and by printing in facing page format the American and British versions of "Traits of Indian Character" (which differed from each other in a variety of interesting ways). Also included are an excerpt from Irving's first major work, A History of New York; excerpts from a key source that Irving drew on for "Rip Van Winkle"; and a selection of illustrations showing some of the ways in which this character was imagined in nineteenth-century America. With a concise but wide-ranging introduction and extensive explanatory notes, this edition is ideally suited for course use.

  • av Harriet Beecher Stowe
    276,-

Uncle Tom's Cabin may well have excited more controversy than any other work of fiction in American history. Welcomed by many abolitionists and met with indignation by supporters of slavery, it gave crucial impetus to the antislavery movement, and its characters and dramatic scenes were quickly absorbed into the nation's consciousness; at the same time, its employment of racial stereotypes and emphasis on Christian nonresistance in the face of violence left behind a troubling legacy that was debated by black Americans in the nineteenth century and that culminated in the popular tradition of "Tom shows" that persisted well into the twentieth century. With a brief but robust introduction, judicious selection of the most essential and frequently taught portions of the novel, and examples of contemporary responses, this abridged edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe's antislavery classic provides an overview of the novel's plot, themes, and rhetorical strategies, and is ideal for classroom use.

In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. In the revised third edition of this volume, the term "Anglo-Saxon" has been removed from our editorial apparatus--a change made in response to recent scholarly work that has drawn attention to the term's historical and current usage by white supremacists. We have also taken the opportunity to implement a small number of additional improvements; the pagination, however, remains the same.

  • av Susanna Rowson
    276,-

As Americans began defining who was to be counted a citizen in their newly-established republic, Susanna Rowson's comic opera Slaves in Algiers (1794) makes an earnest case that women be accorded the rights guaranteed to men, playfully turning sexual hierarchies on their head: "Women were born for universal sway; / Men to adore, be silent, and obey." A fast-paced plot, engaging characterization, and rollicking songs ensured that Slaves in Algiers garnered success when it was first performed at the New Theater in Philadelphia. But Rowson's play also engages in perpetuating racial stereotypes: set in Algiers at a time when Barbary pirates were seizing more and more U.S. ships in the Mediterranean Sea, Slaves in Algiers is written for a largely white audience driven by outrage at the enslavement of white people in the Barbary states. The play is critical of many aspects of North African cultures, particularly the practices of piracy and enslavement, while not acknowledging the moral and ethical taint of America's own enslavement of African Americans. In recent years, critics have given increased attention to Slaves in Algiers, particularly to its interwoven feminist, nationalist, and imperialist themes, as well as to its treatment of Muslim and Jewish characters.

  • av Arthur Machen
    330,-

First published in the height of the "yellow nineties" and in the shadow of the Oscar Wilde trials, Arthur Machen's The Three Impostors (1895) remains a relatively obscure text even as Machen receives increasing attention for his contributions to supernatural horror, the weird, and even science fiction. Situating this generically uncertain, richly multi-layered text in transnational traditions of the short-story cycle, the print culture of the 1890s, and the colonial scientific and material cultures of the fin de siècle, this edition shows that Machen's long-neglected text has a strong claim to our renewed attention today. An extensive selection of accompanying historical documents includes contemporary reviews, related literary "inter-texts," and documents and images related to the book's publication history, design, and relationship to contemporary print culture.

  • av William Shakespeare
    310,-

King Lear is a play for our times. The central characters experience intense suffering in a hostile and unpredictable world. They face domestic cruelty, political defeat, and a stormy external environment that invades them "to the skin." They constantly question the meaning of their experiences as we watch their emotions range from despair to rage to unexpected tenderness and desperate hope as they are rejected, even tortured. Lear's daughters, as in a fairy tale, are three strong women. The eldest two vie for sexual and political power, while the youngest, Cordelia, is initially banished because of her plain speaking but then returns in a doomed attempt to restore her father to his throne. King Lear has an unusual performance history. It was significantly revised, by Shakespeare or others, between its first two publications and was then succeeded by an adaptation that softened the ending so that Lear and Cordelia survived. In our own times King Lear is performed around the world in productions that explore its relevance to contemporary political and environmental challenges. This edition offers a distinctive "extended" text, taking the later Folio as a starting point and adding the lines that appear only in the Quarto, distinguished by a light gray background. Variations in individual words that are of critical interest are recorded in the margin.

The Broadview Anthology of British Satire, 1660-1750 provides instructors and students with a thorough introduction to the highpoint of British literary satire. Reflecting current pedagogical practice and scholarship, the anthology presents works by thirty satirists, including eleven women. The contents are expansive: they include canonical, frequently taught texts; less anthologized works by major satirists; and works by writers who have been traditionally excluded from anthologies. Biographical headnotes, crisp footnotes, and carefully edited texts make the book suitable for use in both undergraduate and graduate classrooms. By turns raucous, piercing, acerbic, winking, vexatious, and sly, the satires in the anthology will provoke fresh, dynamic approaches to this crucial literary period.

"Even the most useful reference guides are not always, well, shall we say, riveting. A refreshing exception is the new Broadview Guide to Writing, which is smart, helpful, and even fun to read." --Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, authors of They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing Key Features --A coil-bound reference text suitable for a range of introductory composition and writing courses --Divided into three sections: Writing Processes (including Research, Argumentation, and Style) Writing Mechanics (Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation) Writing Contexts (Writing in different academic disciplines, Forms and conventions, and citation) --Comprehensive treatment of citation style guides, with 2016 MLA style updates --Expanded treatment of research methods, argument structures, and writing in the workplace --A unique section on "How to Be Good With Words"--issues of gender, race, class, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc. --Expanded coverage for those whose native language is not English --All-new chapter on reading images --Extensive companion website featuring interactive exercises Increasingly, writing handbooks are seen as over-produced and overpriced. One stands out: The Broadview Guide to Writing is published in an elegant but simple format, and sells for roughly half the price of its fancier-looking competitors. That does not change with the new edition; what does change and stay up-to-date is the content of the book. The sixth edition brings a substantial re-organization of the contents under three headings: Writing Processes, Writing Mechanics, and Writing Contexts. Coverage of APA, Chicago, and CSE styles of documentation has been substantially expanded, and the MLA section has now been fully revised to take into account all the 2016 changes. Also expanded is coverage of academic argument; of writing and critical thinking; of writing about literature, of paragraphing; of how to integrate quoted material into one's own work; of balance and parallelism; and of issues of gender, race, religion etc. in writing. The chapter "Seeing and Meaning: Reading (and Writing About) Visual Images" is entirely new to the sixth edition.

  • av Charlotte Perkins Gilman
    326,-

This new edition of Women and Economics highlights the importance of Charlotte Perkins Gilman as a leading public intellectual of the Progressive Era. It contains Gilman's most influential economic analysis, including her signature idea that the relationship between men and women is at core "sexuo-economic." Gilman applies ideas and techniques from evolutionary science to the study of marriage and the family. Her highly original approach reveals that female dependency is not a natural but rather a cultivated phenomenon. Women and Economics proposes wide-reaching social and economic reforms that were radical at the time and, as numerous twenty-first-century feminist economists continue to argue, are yet to be achieved today. Related literary works by Gilman and historical documents allow readers to situate Gilman's ideas in relation to larger debates concerning labour relations, the family, and women's role in society.
