Among the many books aboutAmong the many books about the Civil War, Company Aytch stands out for its uniquely personal view of life as a Confederate Soldier. The author, Sam Watkins was an engaging writer with Twain-like talents who served as a foot soldier for four long years in the Confederate army. Originally published in 1881, Watkins' account has long been recognized by historians as one of the most lively and witty narratives of the war. Watkins' novel-like autobiography of his years with the Army of Tennessee cover his service on the front lines of every major battle including Shiloh, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville. Much more impressionistic than a historic telling of the facts, Company Aytch lays bare the attitude of a rebel private who endured starvation, forced marches, punishing battles and the monotony of camp life while serving the "Lost Cause." Watkins did an excellent job of letting the reader into his head, revealing the thinking shared by ordinary soldiers who paid for the Civil War drama with their youth, blood and life. Parallels between Company Aytch and The Red Badge of Courage suggest that Stephen Crane was among Private Watkins's readers.

"Missionary Methods," written by Roland Allen in 1912, was a book well ahead of its time. Even today his radical critique of Western missionary methods is cutting edge, though the biblical principles he advocates are now being embraced more and more by some ministries that are not tradition-bound. While this book and its sequel (Spontaneous Expansion) address mission work specifically, the principles described do not apply only to how the people of one country do missionary work in another.These books really are about what the Bible has to show us about how to carry out the mission of the church, whether in our own culture, in ministering cross-culturally in our own back yard, or planting churches across an ocean. If Allen is right in the conclusions he draws about finance, many church planting efforts may be operating by financial principles that do more to hinder rather than help establish a healthy, self-supporting church. Allen's observations on the biblical pattern for selecting and equipping elders for local church leadership challenged not only the status quo of the Anglican church of his day, but continue to challenge the practices of most churches today.The fact that "Missionary Methods" was written a century ago but still applies to our times is evidence of the Truth it holds. Not an easy read, Allen's book nonetheless provokes much thought and reflection. Also an excellent commentary on Paul's letters, Allen's book is a must read for everyone that is even contemplating a career overseas-and even more so if that career involves missionary work.

Edyth Prescott, the heroine of the story, is accompanied by her father on trips to Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. Needless to say, the southern sojourn ended up being much more than either of them bargained for.The book was well-received in its day. As one reviewer wrote, "a novel from the pen of Mr. Burgwyn will be read with interest by his many Richmond friends." To their personal interest in the author will be added the pleasure of an ideal Virginia story.The local coloring of the work as well as the faithful portraiture of typical Virginia characters is marked. The descriptions of Washington, Richmond, and the Battle of Fredericksburg are vivid, faithful, and accurate. This is definitely a child-friendly book, written simply, enough to interest the younger set-yet with enough color and detail to hold older readers as well. Overall, it gives a very good introduction to Roman history.
