    av Alan Stibbs
    157

No one in his generation did more to help people, and especially students, to understand the Bible, to love the Bible and to obey it. His memorial is in many lives and in many pulpits throughout the world. So declared the Inter-Varsity Fellowship annual report on the death in July 1971 of Alan Stibbs who, for more than thirty years, exercised an influential ministry as a Bible expositor and cogent teacher of Christian doctrine. After returning from the mission field in China in the mid-1930s, he played a significant part in the resurgence of conservative evangelicalism in Britain after World War Two - alongside other leaders like Martyn Lloyd-Jones and John Stott. From Oak Hill College in north London, Stibbs aimed to revive biblical preaching and biblical thinking across the country. His powerful sermons made a profound impact upon countless congregations and his pithy writings helped to stimulate the rebirth of a robust evangelical theology.

Any regular attendee at School concerts will have heard countless renditions of Any dream will do ! Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rices musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat has certainly brought awareness of Joseph?'s name to contemporary society - but has it contributed to our understanding of the historical Joseph, and his role in the Bible?'s big picture? Any glance at the first book of the Bible will show that, in terms of sheer space, the story of Joseph is of some considerable importance. Although no tribe is named after him, and the Messiah is not descended from him, Joseph nonetheless occupies a crucial role in the Bible?'s drama of redemption. Ultimately Joseph?'s story is about God?'s intention to save, not just Joseph?'s family, but bringing through Judah a saviour for the world. Jesus taught us that the key to unlocking the whole Bible is to see it as a book about himself. Every story whispers his name.

  • - America's Genius
    av Christian George
    107

Jonathan Edwards was just an ordinary American boy but he was different too. The country he lived in wasn't the America of today - but a new world full of adventure and opportunity. Battles and Tomahawks were just some of the thrilling adventures that his family lived through. But Jonathan also loved the small things in life too. In an age of scientific discovery, Edwards saw God's beauty displayed most perfectly through nature. His journals are filled with drawings of plants, animals, and spiders because he knew that each one of them reflected the creativity of its Creator. His mind was full of questions and he grappled for the answers. Intellectually there were few to beat him. However it wasn't just his amazing intelligence that set him apart from other boys his age - he may have had a thirst for knowledge but he also had a strong desire for the things of God. His genius and abilities teamed up well with his faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. One day the country that would become the United States of America would look back at this man of brilliance as a founding influence on their land.

Communication is such a vital part of today's world - we are bombarded with thousands of media-transferred messages every day. But with thousands of messages comes confusion. Clarity when talking of ideas and concepts are rare. Public speaking, as exemplified by politicians, has become the science of sound bites for that 5-second media slot. Communication in today's society is not equipping us for public speaking. Christianity communicates ideas that need to be thought through, contemplated and reflected upon. Christians use words because God uses words. He is interested in verbal and written communication. He communicates ideas about himself primarily to us in his written word, the Bible. So if you are faced with an event or occasion when public speaking is needed you may find yourself in need of a helping hand. How to speak at special events can help - because it is written by experts in their field. But before you can prepare an effective talk, you have to prepare yourself and your material. It's not just a case of throwing some jokes and Bible stories together and hoping. How to speak at special events will guide you step-by-step along the way. If you want to make an effective impact at a special event then you need How to speak at special events.
