Besides their intrinsic mathematical interest, geometric partial differential equations (PDEs) are ubiquitous in many scientific, engineering and industrial applications. They represent an intellectual challenge and have received a great deal of attention recently. The purpose of this volume is to provide a missing reference consisting of self-contained and comprehensive presentations. It includes basic ideas, analysis and applications of state-of-the-art fundamental algorithms for the approximation of geometric PDEs together with their impacts in a variety of fields within mathematics, science, and engineering.About every aspect of computational geometric PDEs is discussed in this and a companion volume. Topics in this volume include stationary and time-dependent surface PDEs for geometric flows, large deformations of nonlinearly geometric plates and rods, level set and phase field methods and applications, free boundary problems, discrete Riemannian calculus and morphing, fully nonlinear PDEs including Monge-Ampere equations, and PDE constrained optimizationEach chapter is a complete essay at the research level but accessible to junior researchers and students. The intent is to provide a comprehensive description of algorithms and their analysis for a specific geometric PDE class, starting from basic concepts and concluding with interesting applications. Each chapter is thus useful as an introduction to a research area as well as a teaching resource, and provides numerous pointers to the literature for further readingThe authors of each chapter are world leaders in their field of expertise and skillful writers. This book is thus meant to provide an invaluable, readable and enjoyable account of computational geometric PDEs

Introduction to the Constraints-Led Approach: Application in Football is a coaching resource football coaches can use to understand key theoretical components of the constraints-led approach. Sections discuss ecological dynamics, perception-action, degrees of freedom and complexity theory. Examples are provided within theoretical chapters to assist readers in their practical application. Over 30 designed practices using the constraints-led approach show readers how the theory translates into practice. These are ordered by the aim of the practice, from in possession, to defensive transition, to out of possession and attacking transition. Currently, there are no books on the market covering the constraints-led approach specific to football. The aim is to make this book accessible to football coaches without the necessity to focus solely on academic theory. Provides an overview on the constraints-led approach that will help users gain a basic understanding of the theoryCovers fundamental knowledge for coaches who want to improve their practiceIncludes over 30 practice session plans with key theoretical concepts

A Practical Guide to Piping and Valves for the Oil and Gas Industry covers how to select, test and maintain the right oil and gas valve. Each chapter focuses on a specific type of valve with a built-in structured table on valve selection. Covering both onshore and offshore projects, the book also gives an introduction to the most common types of corrosion in the oil and gas industry, including CO2, H2S, pitting, crevice, and more. A model to evaluate CO2 corrosion rate on carbon steel piping is introduced, along with discussions on bulk piping components, including fittings, gaskets, piping and flanges. Rounding out with chapters devoted to valve preservation to protect against harmful environments and factory acceptance testing, this book gives engineers and managers a much-needed tool to better understand today''s valve technology. Presents oil and gas examples and challenges relating to valves, including many illustrations from valves in different stages of projectsHelps readers understand valve materials, testing, actuation, packing and preservation, also including a new model to evaluate CO2 corrosion rates on carbon steel pipingPresents structured valve selection tables in each chapter to help readers pick the right valve for the right project

Methane hydrates are still a complicated target for today''s oil and gas offshore engineers, particularly the lack of reliable real field test data or obtaining the most recent technology available on the feasibility and challenges surrounding the extraction of methane hydrates. Oceanic Methane Hydrates delivers the solid foundation as well as today''s advances and challenges that remain. Starting with the fundamental knowledge on gas hydrates, the authors define the origin, estimations, and known exploration and production methods. Historical and current oil and gas fields and roadmaps containing methane hydrates around the world are also covered to help lay the foundation for the early career engineer. Lab experiments and advancements in numerical reservoir simulations transition the engineer from research to practice with real field-core sampling techniques covered, points on how to choose producible methane hydrate reservoirs, and the importance of emerging technologies. Actual comparable onshore tests from around the world are included to help the engineer gain clarity on field expectations. Rounding out the reference are emerging technologies in all facets of the business including well completion and monitoring, economics aspects to consider, and environmental challenges, particularly methods to reduce the costs of methane hydrate exploration and production techniques. Rounding out a look at future trends, Oceanic Methane Hydrates covers both the basics and advances needed for today''s engineers to gain the required knowledge needed to tackle this challenging and exciting future energy source.Understand real data and practice examples covering the newest developments of methane hydrate, from chemical, reservoir modelling and production testing Gain worldwide coverage and analysis of the most recent extraction production tests Cover the full range of emerging technologies and environmental sustainability including current regulations and policy outlook

Climate Change Biology, Third Edition, addresses how climate change may affect life on the planet, particularly its impact on biology. Presented in three parts, it deals extensively with the physical evidence of climate change and modeling efforts to predict its future. Biological responses are then addressed, from individual physiology, to populations and ecosystems, adaptation and evolution. The final section examines the specific impact climate change may have on natural resources, particularly relating to human livelihood. This book will be a useful asset to the growing number of both undergraduate and graduate courses on climate change. All sections are updated using the more than 5,000 research papers that have appeared on the topic since the publication of the second edition. Sections on the combined effects of ocean acidification and climate change are especially strengthened, with over six new case studies and end of chapter questions in each chapter. Covers the evolving discipline of human-induced climate change and the resulting shifts in the distributions of species and timing of biological eventsOffers positive solutions and policy relevant insights on how extinctions can be avoidedIncludes stunning full-color illustrations from original research
