These three exquisite miniatures---composed in 2009 and lasting a total of five minutes---are responses to the poetry of George Bruce. In the first, soloist and piano are fused together as a single instrument, as if singing from a great distance. Suckling describes the following movements as inside a beam of light and a never-ending lullaby. Three Venus Haiku exist in versions for a number of different solo instruments with piano, and this edition is intended for either flute or violin.

Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands, and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. There it has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp.

King Arthur was the first of 28 scores Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) composed for radio between 1937 and 1947. It was an ambitious dramatisation of King Arthur's life and times - part pageant, part play, part cantata - written by D.G. Bridson.

Smoke Sketches was composed at the invitation of Brass Bands England for the Intermediate Section of the 2017 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. This colourful, jazzy suite draws inspiration from the ancient art of gazing into smoke from fire to find stories through the act of divination. Into the Blaze suggests someone briskly fire-walking, barefoot, with unexpected sparks fizzling from the ground. A Lonesome Ember captures the fleeting life of a small ember, beginning insignificantly and gradually evolving into a larger being before disappearing into ash, while Spark of Light bristles with life and energy. Band Grade 3/4, duration 8 minutes.

Carl VineΓÇÖs engaging Strutt Sonata for cello and piano was premiered at the 2017 Huntington Estate Music Festival by Julian Smiles and Ian Munro. Named after John Strutt and commissioned by his wife Josephine, this single 15-minute movement includes a lyrical aria that returns in darkly mirrored form and a joyous presto finale.

Adès’s third opera, The Exterminating Angel premiered at the Salzburg Festival in July 2016. Based on Luis Buñuel’s surrealist classic El ángel exterminador, the opera sees a collection of society’s grandees inexplicably trapped in a room. The libretto, adapted from the original Buñuel-Alcoriza screenplay by the composer together with the director Tom Cairns brilliantly captures their descent into anarchy. Featuring a jaw-dropping 15 principals (who remain on stage for the majority of the piece), The Exterminating Angel is a true ensemble opera, and the skill with which Adès delineates the many intricacies and undercurrents present over its densely-packed span (just under two hours plus interval) is breathtaking. Like the shipwrecked characters of The Tempest, the cast of this new opera are held in a state of entrapment and dramatic stasis. Like the glittering high-society world of Powder Her Face, the dinner party guests are denizens of a nightmarish world of aristocratic pretension.

This opera opened April 23, 1881 at the Opera Comique and ran for 578 performances at both the Opera Comique and Savoy Theatres. The county dames are in love with two poets while the poets are both in love with Patience, the village milkmaid. The brigade men don't see the point to aesthetics, but decide they had better give it a try to win.

The Lord is My Shepherd is best known as the theme tune to the award-winning BBC TV series The Vicar of Dibley. Warm and melodious, Goodall's setting of Psalm 23 is deservedly well loved by choirs and congregations everywhere.

Fantasy for Violin and Piano was written for the final scene of the film Ladies in Lavender. Although supposedly composed by the fictional Boris Danilov, the job of creating an authentic period piece fell to the film's composer, Nigel Hess. The piece was performed on the soundtrack by Joshua Bell with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

O Come, Let Us Sing Unto The Lord was written for Stephen Layton and Polyphony by Morten Lauridsen.  Purchase the sheet music for unaccompanied SATB chorus.  In speaking of Lauridsen in his book Choral Music in the Twentieth Century, the author Nick Strimple says of him, ''he is the only American composer in history who can be called mystic, (whose) probing, serene work contains all the elusive and indefinable ingredient which leaves the impression that all questions have been answered... From 1993 Lauridsen''s music rapidly increased in international popularity, and by the centuy''s end he had eclipsed Tandall Thompson as the most frequently performed American choral composer''.

Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto, written in 2005, is one of the most important additions to the violin concerto repertoire since Ligeti’s. Cast in three contrasting movements – each linked by a preoccupation with circling musical figures – the concerto, subtitled ‘Concentric Paths’ now occupies a place in standard repertoire. Two lithe, rhythmically driven movements – ‘Rings’ and ‘Rounds’ – bookend ‘Paths’ an intensely emotional and gritty exploration of passacaglia-like sequences which peaks in a lyrical outpouring of exceptional beauty.‘In just 20 minutes, this three-movement piece does something magical.
