Many have sought reasons why Napoleon lost the great battle at Waterloo, seen by many as the most famous conflict of the nineteenth century. Waterloo Casualties presents the litany of failures by one of Napoleon's key subordinates, General Drouet d'Erlon, which ultimately led to defeat. Using newly uncovered source material in archives in Paris, Dawson presents the campaign from the viewpoint of d'Erlon to explore his failings over four days that changed the course of European history. The book explores for the first time what really happened at Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte, and on the French right wing as the Prussians closed in. The actions between Papelotte and Frischermont were critical in the story of the battle, but have, so far, been seldom studied. As no red-coated soldiers fought here, and the Waterloo mythos says the red coats won the battle, the study of half of the battle has to a large extent been ignored. Dawson's meticulous analysis highlights key strategic decisions of one of the most significant military engagements of the last 500 years.

Drawing on the recollections of the men and women who served on the vessels, Serving on the Big Ships: Life on the Liners presents a unique window into a bygone age. The 1950s to early 1980s was the last period in which passengers sailed simply to get somewhere, before the liners turned to cruising and airlines became the only feasible means of traveling long distances. It was a golden age of ocean travel, even though the signs of inevitable decline were in evidence all around. For those who worked on the ships, whether stewards or captains or anyone in between, looking back conjures a range of emotions and stories as diverse as the ports to which they sailed. Recorded here are memories of sailing on the North Atlantic with Cunard & Holland-America, with the Italian Line in the Mediterranean, with Royal Mail Lines to South America, with Union-Castle to Africa, and with P&O-Orient to Australia and the Far East. They are the memories of the people who manned the ships, served on them, and through their service, grew to love them.

"Whether you are just interested in perusing through some never before seen photos from the German side during the war, or are looking for something to boost your enthusiasm to build something out of the ordinary, this book is a worthy pick." -- AMPSFrontkämpfer is a collection of World War II German photographs, the majority of which have never been published before. Sourced directly from personal photo albums of German veterans, Allied soldiers, and archival resources, readers are taken on a chronological journey through World War II, its beginning in September 1939 with the Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland and its culmination with the German surrender in Berlin in May 1945. Frontkämpfer takes the reader through the campaigns in Europe, North Africa, and the Soviet Union, as well as the air war and the war at sea. Featured in this volume are all branches of the German Wehrmacht: Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, Waffen SS, foreign volunteer legions, Volkssturm, and auxiliary support units. This book presents a detailed study of the uniforms, small arms, equipment, and machinery of the German military, including rare and experimental subject matter. Historically significant battles such as Stalingrad and wartime personalities are featured as well. As an added bonus, photographs from the early post-war years are included, highlighting the return of German POWs, the reconstruction of Germany, and the birth of the West German Bundeswehr and East German Nationale Volksarmee. Frontkämpfer is a must have for students of German military history.
