A personal and heartwarming story of two families who left their Quebec, Canada homes and made the long difficult journey through New England to find work in the textile mills, finally settling in the city of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. The Telliers and Fontaines joined many French Canadians who had transplanted their culture and language virtually intact to this American city. The author Rene Tellier recorded the stories passed down to him by his mother Leopoldine and father Alphonse in their French patois language, a dialect of the common people. For readers who don't speak French, all have been translated into English.Like many teens of their time, Alphonse and Leopoldine were required to cut short their formal education to help support their families, but both were intelligent, well-read and highly informed individuals who passed on their love of learning to their five children: Robert, Suzanne, Rene, Bernard and Rachel. In telling his family's story beginning in 1904, Tellier also delves into the history of Woonsocket and the many friends and relatives who influenced his life, surviving the Great Depression, serving the World War II effort and adjusting to the post-war changes in the city. As a family of deep faith they attended St. Ann's Church, visible from their Gaulin Avenue apartment, which was the center of their lives where they worshiped and received the sacraments. The author attended Mount Saint Charles Academy and returned as a Brother of the Sacred Heart to serve as Guidance Counselor. Guided by a love of family, a strong Roman Catholic faith, a sense of humor, and an eagerness to learn, this family of seven endured, persevered and triumphed, achieving the American dream.

WRITTEN IN 1913, JUST BEFORE THE OUTBREAK OF WORLD WAR I, RABBI ABRAHAM ISAAC HAKOHEN KOOK EXPLORES THE CONFLICT BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER. A deeply spiritual work, Rav Kook gives a theory of the nature of souls - explains based on Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism that there are souls of chaos and souls of order. It continues to intrigue and inspire spiritual seekers in our day. FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "The Souls of the World of Chaos" speaks specifically to the soul of the Second Aliyah, the second wave of immigration to Erets Yisrael in modern times. Typically, these founders of the kibbutz movement were young Russian Jews who espoused ideals of Socialism while rebelling against the traditional Jewish lifestyle and mores. Like any classic work of literature, this essay is of perennial value and continues to resonate throughout the ages, whenever there is a concerted breakdown of the established order and a new world order, yet hazy and ill-defined, looms on the horizon. Though Rav Kook witnessed a total shattering of the old and familiar, he remains resilient and uncannily optimistic-in stark contrast to most of his rabbinic peers. "But in truth, there is nothing to fear; only sinners, weak souls and flatterers fear and tremble." Rav Kook is confident that this very revolutionary power, a cause of consternation to many, will be appropriated by "the righteous, strong as lions, who will reveal the truth of the tikkun and the building." HOW SHOULD THE ORTHODOX COMMUNITY VIEW NON-RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS? This is the question that confronted Rav Kook at the beginning of the twentieth century. Eretz Yisrael was torn between two worlds - religion and secularism, tradition and innovation, stability and disruption. Rather than reject these non-religious movements "root and branch" Rav Kook takes a conciliatory tone, arguing that the energy and dynamism of these "souls of chaos" must have a divine spark that can be elevated and redeemed in the proper way. This edition of The Souls of the World of Chaos is meticulously translated from the original Hebrew by Rabbi Bezalel Naor, who has also undertaken the formidable task of unpacking the Kabbalistic structures that inform the essay. The informative endnotes serve as an endless resource for Rav Kook's sources and influences, as well as additional illuminating anecdotes and stories of Rav Kook and other great Jewish figures. RABBI ABRAHAM ISAAC HAKOHEN KOOK (1865-1935) was the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel. In addition to being a world-class Talmudist and Halachist, he was perhaps the greatest mystic and Kabbalist of his generation. His writing is both poetically rich and philosophically profound, and he has written on Zionism, the relationship between Jews and non-Jews, the Orthodox view of non-Orthodox Jews, Messianism, and countless other issues, by trying to find the holiness in even the most mundane aspects of life while also standing firm in matters of traditional belief and practice. His writings draw extensively from Lurianic Kabbalah (from Rabbi Isaac Luria, the "Ari"), Rabbi Shlomo Zalman of Liady (the Tanya), the Vilna Gaon, and other great authorities, but Rav Kook invariable adds his own interpretation and application to the doctrines of those giants who preceded him. RABBI BEZALEL NAOR is an expositor par excellence and lifelong student of the teachings of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Hakohen Kook. In addition to having translated many of Rav Kook's most important works, Rabbi Naor is the author of original studies of Jewish Thought in both English and Hebrew. He lectures widely on Judaism, mysticism, the thought of Rav Kook, and many other topics.

For the last twelve years, I have been a no-one. I have had no friends, no family, and no name. I have kept to myself through my daily duties as a servant of the Veil. I bless those as I pass them in a religion I know nothing about. I am beaten, tortured, and starved as punishment for not being meek enough. It all changes with the whisper of my name, Juniper. My life now has a purpose but what could it possibly be? When a mysterious man not only knows my name but knows my purpose, I find myself on the run with a band of criminals all dead set on one thing...Death to the Queen

The Red Bones started out as just a couple people with bold mouths but have now grown into a well-known rebellion group among Veladis. What started as whispers of Artis blood being a curse from the stars, became discussions over drinks, and in turn, plans to overthrow the court. King Pater's reply was simple.Me.A Royal Assassin. His Invisible Dagger. The King's Favorite.I'm the most feared assassin in the nation and nobody knows my first name, what I look like, or even that I'm a girl. No one would ever suspect a castle healer-let alone a twenty-year old female-to be the king's assassin. They don't know what to look for or who to expect, and when I come face to face with them, they always underestimate me. Which in turn ends up with either their heads rolling on the floor, or a knife through their foreheads. My only question... who's leading them?I never once feared that my identity would be discovered, not until the banished prince made his unwelcome return. Will Prince Bennett discover my secret or does he carry some of his own? My once childhood friend is now the center of all my suspicion. I hope I can trust him, or else he may end up like the rest of my victims... with my dagger to his throat. You'll love this story if you love these tropes: Childhood Friends to Enemies to LoversMasquerade BallOne BedKnife to ThroatChosen OneTraining RoomSecret IdentityFound FamilyForced Proximity

When low-level legbreaker Kincaid takes on a new assignment, he discovers it's not really a step up - it's a setup. The deal was supposed to be this: Protect Abby Doyle, the daughter of Birmingham, Alabama's most dangerous crime lord. But when Abby's fiancé is found murdered, Kincaid is forced to team up with BPD detective Laura D'Agostino to find the killer and protect Abby at all costs ... even from her own father.Praise for Magic City Blues"A twisty, propulsive read led by a witty, compelling narrator. I couldn't put it down!"-Cassandra Rose Clarke, author of The Mad Scientist's Daughter"The action comes early and often in Magic City Blues and the energy of this spellbinding novel cannot be denied. Bobby Mathews is a first-rate writer point blank and the crime poet laureate of Birmingham. A master craftsman of new-south noir, who deftly balances crackling dialogue, sly humor, grit and tenderness with smart and wily plotting paired with hard-boiled suspense and the kind of complicated (anti) hero in Kincaid we can all get behind. Somewhere at the great poker game in the sky, Donald Westlake, Robert Parker and James Crumley are raising a glass to Magic City Blues ... as should we all."-Peter Farris, award-winning author of The Devil Himself"Magic City Blues is a straight shot of classic crime fiction reminiscent of Donald Westlake and Robert B. Parker. With one-liners galore, and sharp, punchy writing, Bobby Mathews' latest novel is not to be missed!"-Eli Cranor, author of Don't Know Tough"Calling back to the best of Robert B. Parker with a wit that reminded me of Gregory MacDonald, Bobby Mathews introduces two great characters in his page-turner Magic City Blues. The first is veteran-turned-low-level-street-thug Kincaid, and the second is the city of Birmingham, Alabama, a city that has deserved its time as a worthy crime-fiction locale. It's a city of barbecue and soul food, of racism and gentrification, of power and money and secrets - the perfect setting for what will hopefully be an ongoing series of novels."-Jordan Harper, Edgar-winning author of Everybody Knows"Magic City Blues by Bobby Mathews is a down and dirty exaltation of what I love best about crime fiction. Bad people doing bad things for what they think are the right reasons. Bobby has written a fantastic book."-S.A. Cosby, New York Times bestselling author of Razorblade Tears"Magic City Blues is a slick, fast-moving crime novel that fans of Robert B. Parker and Donald Westlake will want to get their hands on. Murder, blackmail, romance-this story has it all. With just the perfect mix of brawn and brains, bodyguard-for-hire Kincaid is a narrator you won't soon forget as he navigates the seedy underbelly of Birmingham, dealing out ass-kicking justice and wit in equal manner. Bobby Mathews pulls no punches with this burner."-Scott Blackburn, author of It Dies With You
