Two baby girls seating in the rear of a car are involved in a terrible accident and their mother dies. An alien spacecraft hovering in the storm above witnesses the event and teleports the girls from the burning car. The girls are taken to the alien's home world on the other side of the galaxy. On arrival, they are separated and never told they were saved from a burning vehicle on a planet on the other side of the galaxy. Twenty-six years later, they are headed to Earth on opposite sides of good and evil. However, they are not aware they are sisters, let alone earthlings. The goal of this manual is to share information that can be of value to the practicing dentist, especially the periodontist. Most of the concepts presented in this manual were taught to me when I was a student of Dr. Henry M. Goldman, Dr. D Walter Cohen, Dr. Morton Amsterdam, and Dr. Leonard Abrams of the universities of Pennsylvania and Boston graduate dental schools; visionaries of their times. I learned these concepts in 1961 to 1963 and have practiced them for the fifty-six years I was a practicing periodontist. Today's direction in periodontal field is toward soft tissue grafting and implants. The art of saving teeth seems to be minimized, so I would like to revitalize an alternate treatment course using occlusal control to help retain teeth.

During basic training in the army, it was common practice for the recruits to exercise and march to the cadence of popular songs of the time to keep the trainees in sync. It also took the trainees' minds off the exercise--sometimes strenuous--that they were engaged in, and a five-mile forced march before breakfast was tolerated with little grumbling. Although the cadence was always the same, the words were often changed to reflect the reality of military duty. At the time, the words of the Coasters's hit song "Poison Ivy" were adapted to fit the life of a grunt in Vietnam. For example, "Poison ivy, poison ivy / Late at night while you're sleepin' / Poison ivy comes a-creepin' around" was changed to "Charlie Cong, Charlie Cong / Late at night while you're sleepin' / Charlie Cong comes a-creepin' around." On arriving in Vietnam, his first assignment was with the Fourth Infantry Division which was commonly referred to as the Ivy Division but was given several unofficial nicknames including the Funky Fourth and the Poison Ivy Division. Although he was only assigned to the Fourth Infantry for one-third of his tour, it was the most dangerous and memorable four months he spent in Vietnam. It seemed fitting that Poison Ivy was the perfect choice for the title of this book.
