Explores the definition, sources and role of randomness. This book explains as to why rules and randomness cannot exist by themselves, but instead have to coexist. It also presents examples, ranging from pure mathematical to natural and social processes, that demonstrate how the combination of rules and randomness produces the world we live in.

Offers the reader practical methods to compute the option prices in the incomplete asset markets. This title shows that the geometric Levy process (GLP) is a typical example of the incomplete market, and that the MEMM (minimal entropy martingale measure) is an extremely powerful pricing measure. It also introduces the [GLP \& MEMM] pricing models.

The vast majority of automatic controllers used to compensate industrial processes are PI or PID type. This book covers the tuning rules for these controllers proposed from 1935 to 2008. It discusses controller architecture and process modeling issues, as well as the performance and robustness of loops compensated with PI or PID controllers.

Introduces readers to the world of disordered systems and to some of the remarkable probabilistic techniques developed in the field. This volume explores a class of directed polymer models to which much attention has been devoted, in particular in the fields of physical and biological sciences.

  • av Brian (Royal Holloway Cowan

Presents an advanced level course on statistical and thermal physics. This book provides a review of the formal structure of statistical mechanics. It emphasises on interacting systems. It considers the weakly interacting systems, and then examines the system where interactions lead to phase transitions.

  • av Colm (Univ Of Cambridge Durkan

Deals with how electric currents behave at the nanometer scale. This book ties together several aspects of research on current flow at the nanoscale, including its relevance in defects, grain boundaries, tunneling, and atomic contacts; and its effects through nanostructures, particularly for transistor miniaturization.

  • av Epaminondas Mastorakos & Stewart R. Cant

Modeling is a major tool for important environmental strategies. This book helps to understand and criticize the models of the shallow sea and coastal environments. It includes topics that cover the numerical schemes used, the modeling of the sea bed, modeling of shallow sea dynamics, and the modeling of ecosystems and animals.

  • av Paul (Research Centre Juelich Gibbon

Aims to represent a comprehensive treatment of the subject, covering the theoretical principles, experimental status, and applications of short-pulse laser-matter interactions. This book looks at the physical phenomena, which arise as a result of this form of "light-matter" interaction.

Merkel cell carcinoma is an uncommon but not rare aggressive cutaneous malignancy. This book summarizes the knowledge about Merkel cell carcinoma and provides a perspective on future opportunities for diagnostic and therapeutic advances. It also offers practical how to advice on diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

Structures cannot be created without engineering theory, and design rules have existed from the earliest times for building Greek temples, Roman aqueducts and Gothic cathedrals ΓÇö and later, for steel skyscrapers and the frames for aircraft. This book is, however, not concerned with the description of historical feats, but with the way the structural engineer sets about his business. Galileo, in the seventeenth century, was the first to introduce recognizably modern science into the calculation of structures; he determined the breaking strength of beams. In the eighteenth century engineers moved away from this ΓÇÿultimate loadΓÇÖ approach, and early in the nineteenth century a formal philosophy of design had been established ΓÇö a structure should remain elastic, with a safety factor on stress built into the analysis. This philosophy held sway for over a century, until the first tests on real structures showed that the stresses confidently calculated by designers could not actually be measured in practice. Structural engineering has taken a completely different path since the middle of the twentieth century; plastic analysis reverts to Galileo''s objective of the calculation of ultimate strength, and powerful new theorems now underpin the activities of the structural engineer. This book deals with a technical subject, but the presentation is completely non-mathematical. It makes available to the engineer, the architect and the general reader the principles of structural design.
