Er bewohnte längere Jahre das OberelsaÃ, namentlich das schöne Münstertal und hatte dort vielfach Gelegenheit mit dem Volke zu verkehren, viele Münstertäler Ausdrücke und Redensarten haben sich in unveränderter Gestalt Jahrhunderte lang erhalten. Aus kulturhistorischem Interesse schrieb der Verfasser solche ungewohnte Ausdrücke als Curiosa, zunächst ohne besondere Absicht, auf. Seine erste Quelle war also der lebendige Volksmund. Die Sammlung wuchs allmählich und stetig heran; Freunde, denen Einzelnes vorgelesen wurde, lieferten ihrerseits kleine Beiträge und der Herausgeber hatte an der Sache seine Lust und Freude. Er veröffentlichte eine Reihe von Sprichwörtern in der Alsatia von Professor Dr. August Stöber und in seiner Volksschrift: Münster im Gregoriental (StraÃburg 1874.); zuletzt in der literarischen Beilage zur Gemeindezeitung. Die Sprichwörter fanden Anklang und Zustimmung; daher entschloà sich der Verfasser zur Herausgabe dieser Sammlung, die er hiemit einem geehrten Publikum darbietet. Es spiegelt sich in derlei Reden des Volkes innerstes Seelenleben, sein Denken und Fühlen, ab.
