The first English-language monograph on silversmith, sculptor, jeweler, and artist Wiwen Nilsson, whose work is a gem in the history of Swedish design.Featuring superb new photography, stunning archive imagery, and texts by leading international curators, commentators, and experts, this book is the first English-language monograph dedicated to the life and work of Wiwen Nilsson, a pioneer of art deco and mid-century design and silverware. Lavishly illustrated and deeply insightful, the book provides an overview of Wiwen Nilsson’s personal and professional development, bringing the main facets of his artistic and functional production into sharp focus, as well as presenting important new research about his achievements.A particular emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary nature of Wiwen Nilsson’s practice, and notably on the bridge he built between the realm of fine arts and the world of design. The book includes thematic essays focusing on his silverware products—his sculptural oeuvre, his jewelry production, and his participation in Swedish and international exhibitions. Contributors include Dr. Flavia Frigeri (National Portrait Gallery, UK), Alice Rawsthorn (award-winning design critic), Dr. Teresa Kittler (University of York, UK), and Clare Philips (Victoria & Albert Museum, UK).

An interior design book showing how the alpine context, with its snowy landscapes and forests, influences the choice of colors, materials, and atmospheres. This book addresses a very specific topic within interior architecture, namely that of mountains, where the context of the surrounding landscape is strongly associated with the local identity. The houses published in this volume are all located in the Swiss Alps: in the canton of Ticino and in Engadine. They have been renovated and redeveloped, their interior spaces demolished and rethought. Francesca Neri Antonello is a master of domesticating natural and raw materials, using them to create a warm intimacy that is indispensable for designing the interiors of those who live with the cold alpine temperatures. Her projects center around stone, iron, and above all wood, which is often recovered or burned to obtain the characteristic burnished color. Wood is a living matter, the bearer of memory and, as the architect says, “Memory is a very strong call: it is the set of aspects that forms our personal identities.”Francesca Neri Antonello brings together design thinking, craftsmanship, and a strong empathy with her clients. Each element of the interior is designed to measure: furniture, doors, stairs, fireplaces, lamps. Each accessory is chosen with care, interpreting the personal needs of those who will live in the house. The enveloping atmospheres are enhanced by the fabrics and the skillful combination of artificial and natural light.

Can our surroundings affect our souls? Ed Ng and Terence Ngan from AB Concept believe the answer is a resounding yes.Since the turn of this century, AB Concept has worked as a culture partner of many of the world’s leading hospitality brands, creating compelling interior environments and products that not only win awards and stand every test of time but also inspire powerful emotion in those who experience them. Through an ever-growing portfolio of projects, large and small, Ed and Terence demonstrate the power design has to shape our human experience and leave a positive imprint on the mind. From the beach resort W Algarve to Four Seasons Hong Kong, private houses in Bangkok and Karuizawa in the Japanese Alps, and from Lalique store to the K11 Musea shopping mall, AB Concept applies a single unifying concept—that design is "about being." It is a means to bring more beauty and magic to the world, to enhance our quality of life, and to move and inspire us.All this requires a particular approach, one that is as deeply thoughtful as it is intuitive. Just as a chef will carefully source and explore different ingredients, the AB Concept team combines tools and methods to create an experience more evocative than the sum of its parts. Rooted in place and in culture and awakening our senses in a moment, an understanding of craftsmanship and a talent for storytelling run through every space and every product. This is the book that puts those stories and AB Concept's timeless design secrets to paper.

This book tells about the cosmopolitan life and career of Canadian-Lebanese Gregory Gatserelia, an architect, designer, collector, and art lover.Beirut and the Lebanese interior, design, and sweet life scene; Paris and Milan; high-end residential interiors, collectible design projects, and contemporary art; motorbikes and on-the-road adventures—this is the fascinating world of architect and art collector Gregory Gatserelia, a Canadian-Lebanese designer with Georgian origins. The book features photos of interiors, private houses, and restaurants, with the common thread of decorative ceilings, Gregory Gatserelia's signature.Difficult to catch and to sit down with, Gatserelia has always been focused on doing rather than communicating and advertising. As such, this book represents his first-ever collection of projects and a moment of reflection. The book talks about the smoky, fascinating atmosphere of Beirut with vintage photos and a map of the jewel-town. Gatserelia helped raise awareness and promote contemporary art in the city, and he founded SMO Gallery to promote new talents. The book also includes interviews by Federica Sala with Patrick Perrin (Founder of PAD), Victor Gastou (Gastou Gallery), Jacopo Foggini (Italian designer), and Najla El Zein (artist, SMO gallery).

Thirteen words, thirteen protagonists, thirteen stories. This special journey crosses different regions and tells of mastery, know-how, emotions, and characters that honor ancient Italian traditions.Gaggia, the brand that invented espresso machines for bars and homes, wanted to represent Italian creativity in 13 stories. To achieve this, it selected the same number of contemporary artisans, including a blacksmith, a motorcycle restorer, a ceramist, a hatter, a tailor, and a creator of floral sets, and depicted them in the pages of the book through the images of Stefania Giorgi and the words of Laura Maggi. In this tale, coffee is an often invisible link; it represents the irreplaceable value of reflection, of time rediscovered, of having a break.

This fine-art book discusses the phenomenon of LGBTIQ+ refugees, asylum seekers, and those subject to discrimination in their home countries based on their gender or sexual orientation.More the 40 percent of the countries in the world today still impose prison sentences or the death penalty just for being LGBTIQ+. Asylum is an international project that arose from a collaboration between five associations around the world and photographer Umberto Nicola Nicoletti.Through the use of beautiful “glossy images,” such as those used in fashion and advertising, the project seeks to engender empathy for the subjects involved and their stories. Asylum seekers become celebrities, idols, and heroes as they are. Therefore, it is not photographic reportage but, rather, an art project focused on restoring their dignity.LGBTIQ+ refugees often face double discrimination: in their home country and in their destination, as they are both immigrants and LGBTIQ+. This is especially true in refugee camps, where they are subject to assaults by other migrants. The aim of this project is to give these individuals the identity they are often deprived of when they are reduced to an indistinct mass—and to show the world their true beauty.

This first illustrated book in English about the work of Yeh Shih-Chiang, one of Taiwan’s most reclusive and enigmatic artists, is groundbreaking, timely, and pioneering. This remarkable volume presents the extraordinary life and work of one of Taiwan’s most reclusive artists, Yeh Shih-Chiang, as curated by renowned curator Chang Tsong-Zung (Johnson Chang), and reimagined by Taiwan-US artist Yeh Wei-Li. Constellations reflects a deep affinity between two artists who never met, but whose journeys intersect. Yeh Wei-Li has been reimagining and re-creating the life and living spaces of Yeh Shih-Chiang since 2015—archiving and restoring his printed matter, artworks, and inanimate objects; curating and designing exhibition and architectural structures; and re-creating the actual physical spaces in which he worked. This book reflects that journey, featuring more than 120 color plates. It also contains texts from leading international and regional art critics and scholars, including a defining introductory essay by Chang Tsong-Zung, and textual contributions from Corinne Diserens, Cheng Tsun-Shing, Boris Groys, and Tseng Shao-Chien.

This inspiring volume takes readers on a tour of luxurious interiors that showcase the best of Italian design and architecture. As part of the series dedicated to “Made in Italy” architecture and design (Carlo Scarpa, Piero Portaluppi), this latest book features a stunning collection of interiors by acclaimed Italian designers and architects from the second half of the twentieth century. Each of these exquisite spaces perfectly embodies the designer’s unique creative spirit, encapsulating both the essence of the designer’s personal style and taste with the trends of the era.The ten projects, all specially photographed for the book, include such names in Italian architecture and design as: Carlo Mollino, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Gae Aulenti, Osvaldo Borsani, Piero and Barnaba Fornasetti, among others. Ranging from residential to office spaces, each of these unique spaces has remained largely unchanged, and decades later they still speak for those who conceived of and inhabited them: Casa Fornasetti provides a unique testimony to the world of Piero Fornasetti, and now that of his son, Barnaba, who carries on his work and brand with strength and innovation; Casa Mollino represents the peak of architect Carlo Mollino’s ideas, beautifully serving as his aesthetic and conceptual legacy; and the vibrant, ironic, colorful Casa Quarestani perfectly sums up the poetic vision of Ettore Sottsass. This book will be a must have for lovers of bold design and stylish Italian interiors.

The first international monograph dedicated to Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, one of the most enterprising and exciting young artists working in Africa today. Eddy Kamuanga's large-scale figurative paintings display a wealth of historical understanding in a sophisticated interplay of strikingly colored forms juxtaposed on gray negative space. Kamuanga's work taps into the rich yet complex colonial history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DRC. His politically nuanced and culturally sensitive work explores the seismic shifts in economic, political, and cultural identity in the DRC since colonization. Increasingly globalized in outlook, many in the DRC today are rejecting their ancestral heritage in favor of modernity, a conflict that fuels Kamuanga's work. The DRC is the world's largest exporter of coltan, a mineral critical to the production of computer chips and mobile phones. In all of Kamuanga's works, the skin of each figure is embedded with integrated circuits, referring to the harsh conditions experienced by workers who mine coltan by hand. Eddy Kamuanga has been recognized internationally as one of the most interesting young contemporary African talents of today, and his reputation is growing fast worldwide. His work has been shown across Africa, notably at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), South Africa, and has been included in exhibitions in Europe and the United States, at institutions such as Fowler Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles; Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; Saatchi Gallery, London; and Royal Academy of Arts, London. He is represented by October Gallery, London.

The first illustrated monograph presenting the work of British designer Lee Broom, founder of the eponymous brand and celebrated for his stylish, contemporary take on classic design products. The book explores the many influences and ideas behind Broom’s portfolio of more than 100 products as well as highlights the way in which he showcases his work through original and engaging installations, exhibitions, and films. Lee Broom furniture, lighting, and accessories, some of which is now held in the permanent collections of cultural institutions in London and New York, is at once familiar and yet feels new—a signature skill of reinterpretation and the mix of classicism and modernity. The book is presented thematically in four chapters, each relating to a defining aspect of Broom’s design personality. “Art Form” explores Broom’s relationship with architecture and silhouette, as well as the way in which he works with form, balance, and symmetry. “History Repeats Itself” delves into Broom’s fascination with historical starting points and reinvention and how techniques of the past can inform the future. “Material Boy” focuses on Broom’s meticulous approach to the process of making, his clever use of materials, and the art of collaboration. Finally, “Drama of Design” is a study of Broom’s background in theater and fashion and how both have permeated his creative thinking and the way he presents his work as immersive experiences. With special contributions by Christian Louboutin, Vivienne Westwood and Kelly Wearstler.

The third and fourth volume of "The Art Library", pioneering series of slipcases initiated by the Misk Art Institute to provide a comprehensive panorama of Saudi and Arab visual artists.  These exquisitely designed volumes offer an informal yet richly detailed introduction to the most prominent figures of Arab art. The slipcased set contains two books, each dedicated to a Saudi and a non-Saudi artist. Rafa Nasiri is a contemporary Iraqi painter, printmaker, educator and author whose work combines an abstract reflection on Arabic calligraphy, poetry and Chinese art. His use of color and line resonates with the aesthetics of the Hurufiyya movement and abstract expressionism. Lulwah Al Homoud is a Saudi Arabian contemporary artist. Drawing on traditional Islamic and Western art, her work explores calligraphy and mathematical processes. Her work is distinguished by her use of complex Arabic letters to construct abstract yet technical works on paper. Lulwah Al Homoud and Rafa Nasiri illustrate the vitality and continuous renewal of the art of script and calligraphy in the Arab world. The two artists are from different generations, and their works represent two different genres that are both influenced, inspired and rooted in Arab artistic culture.
