The years prior to Van Gogh's death in 1890 were pivotal to the painter's brief artistic career. He was working in the South of France and intent on creating new work which would advance his career. He set about developing compositions that were informed by the natural world surrounding him, by the poets and lovers he encountered in literature, and by the individual models he was depicting. The process of Van Gogh's imaginative transformations has never been explored in an exhibition and this will provide the opportunity to present significant new insights into the much-loved painter's life. The catalogue features an incredible range of both ambitious canvases and important works on paper. It presents new research on themes including the artist's innovative approach to exhibiting his work and the varied literary sources which inspired his characters and compositions. These topics are rarely written about in relation to this well-known artist and are bound to expand both scholarly and public interpretations of Van Gogh's remarkable oeuvre. Céline Condorelli’s practice addresses the boundaries between public and private, art and function, labour and leisure, in order to reimagine what culture can be and the role of artists within it. As the National Gallery’s 2023 Artist in Residence, she was invited to respond to its collection and that of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Exeter. Condorelli interrogates the role of museums as ‘machines for looking’ which guide audiences in how they perceive and value art. Using sculpture, architecture and installation, her art makes interventions in the ways people navigate space and highlights the act of exhibiting itself. This book presents a new body of work which focuses on the act of seeing, as well as pages created by Condorelli that document her research into the materials, spaces and history of the National Gallery. These are complemented by an essay by curator Priyesh Mistry and an interview with the artist by Lara Goodband.

"Dame Paula Rego RA (1935-2022) was a British-Portuguese artist whose large-scale figurative paintings explored human relationships and the experience of women through compelling, often subversive compositions. Inspired by the predella panel of Carlo Crivelli's altarpiece La Madonna della Rondine (after 1490), Rego produced Crivelli's Garden in 1990-91 while she was artist in residence at the National Gallery. This monumental triptych reimagined the site of Crivelli's panel as a radical space populated by female figures from myth, folklore, and the Bible, alongside animals drawn from Aesop's fables and other classical texts. Literature was a major influence on Rego's practice throughout her career: this publication in turn celebrates the far-reaching influence of Rego's paintings with an original short story by Mexican novelist Chloe Aridjis, inspired by Rego's triptych. Illustrated with previously unpublished preparatory drawings and newly photographed details of the painting, the book also features an art historical essay on the work"--
