This "fractured fairy tale" is the result of Mrs. Burns' first attempt to step out of the comfort zone of writing from experience in her memoir and knock on the door of her imagination for her writer's group's meeting in November 2017. The assignment was to write a fiction piece.  Ellen had tried unsuccessfully, in the past, to write fiction. She had become comfortable writing about her life experiences, during the months of sharing memoir excerpts with her 'Writers on the River', but attempting fiction again was untested and uncertain. This work was actually inspired by a remark made by her husband, as she struggled with the topic for that month's meeting. In keeping with the memoir genre, this tale is set using names familiar with the locals, and to satisfy the assignment of writing fiction, it brings "Little Red Riding Hood" to Northern New York.

The Five Old Guys are all dead now, as are most of the once homeless people in this book, but the long sad line, coming up behind them, hosts several million more of our neighbors, all so poor they cannot afford to go to that place we all go when the darkness comes-a home. These are stories about a few of the thousands of homeless folks who found their way to the campus of the York County Shelter Programs, in an unlikely corner of New England during the end of the twentieth century, but forecast by Robert Frost earlier in the century:  Home, he mocked gently.Yes, what else but home?It all depends on what you mean by home.Of course he''s nothing to us any moreThan was the hound that came a stranger to usOut of the woods, worn out upon the trail''Home is the place where, when you go there,They have to take you in. They are all real people with mothers and fathers, warts and halos, and not one of them ever dreamed that what they would become when they grew up-was homeless.

I have spent much of my life in the out-of-doors following in the autumn footsteps of my father, his father and those generations that came before them. This work is a collection of my hunting memories and is an attempt to pass on my family traditions along with my beliefs, philosophies, observations and personal experiences afield to my children, grandchildren and generation to come as well. It is my hope they too find the joy, peace and meaning afield that I have tried to pass on to them through this endeavor. --Doug

It was a beautiful summer in Munich when Tretan slipped the ring upon Adelisa's finger and made her his wife. Against all odds, against all prejudice, whether it came from those they loved: close friends, family, even strangers, they joined in a union built on care, sacrifice, and unrelenting love that would be put to the test. Years later, in November, Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass had begun, and their world, their family was under the watchful eye of what was now Nazi Germany. Hidden in the darkness, they struggled to survive, living in fear of what would happen should they be reported for breaking racial law. But their nightmare had only just begun. The worst had happened and torn apart by the seams of their life; they were sent to Angel's Grove. Pulled from the lineup in front of her family, Adelisa thought her life was about to be ended. Instead, she was to become the personal maid of the camp's sadistic and twisted commandant, Gottfried Drechsler. Was it mercy that she was spared? The dread that she felt, her cries as she was torn from the arms of those she loved said otherwise and Gottfried's delusions of perfection only proved to be a more personal hell on earth. As time passes, she discovers Gottfried's true intentions, and the cruel game of cat and mouse begins, with the awaiting prize being the safety of her family in the end. Can Adelisa hold against all odds placed before her and come out the victor? Or will Gottfried, with his powerful war machine of bigotry and hate, overwhelm and consume what little is left of her soul?

This book is not a tell-all book. It's a tell what I want to tell about my life and the many twists and turns I took to get to where I am now.Hopefully, it will make you laugh and make you cry. At times, it might make you want to hug me or punch me in the face. It should get people who think they know me to better understand me. And for others to understand and believe that change is possible for everyone.

  • - Retake Control of Your Life
    av Dr Terry Jones
    251

What if you could train your mind to see all the good around you? What if I told you that happiness is a matter of perspective? Many people seem to think inner peace is not a byproduct of struggle but rather a switch to flip then-voila, you're happy. Or they think happiness is only as good as their next relationship. Why? My name is Dr. Terry Jones and I believe the sooner we accept that happiness comes from within us, the sooner we can discover our own Power Tools that will help bring us joy. My goal writing Culture of One is to simply help you maintain a life of personal power and purpose, of internal peace and (yes) happiness. This book will introduce you the tools you need to be happy (no matter your circumstances), then show you how to find them within yourself. Once you become your own Culture of One, you will be empowered to use your own willpower to be the most aware, empathetic, and self-sufficient person you can be. This is not another new age philosophy, it's a pragmatic, psychology-based mind-set that lives inside all of us. Because we all have the choice to be happy every moment of our lives, we really do. Let me show you how.
