Life could be beautiful and idyllic on the little Raptor farm nestled among the shady green forests and sunny meadows of the Big Timber Indian Reservation. But strange and powerful forces were tearing the tiny mission church apart at the seams. Tough and ruggedly handsome Carl Raptor with his coldly competent wife, Charlotte, were raising their small sons in this remote place where the passions and stresses were beyond Carl’s ability to cope. For the Raptor boys, the exhilarating freedom of exploring thousands of acres of wild, game-rich reservation land and thundering their horses down gravel and dirt logging roads would instantly evaporate when their father lost all control and used them to work off his white hot fits of rage. The two oldest sons seemed able to cope, but Michael, the third son, lived in near-constant fear. The beatings and torments increased as Carl’s stress levels rose, and while the welts and bruises on their small bodies healed fairly quickly, the emotional and psychological scarring of Michael’s soul would take many years to heal. This is his story.

  • - Good vs. Evil
    av Melvin L Jones

Let me introduce myself, my name is Melvin L. Jones. I was born in Chicago, Illinois, raised on the south side of town. I am one of six children. I have three brothers and two sisters. We were brought up in a home by my uncle, an Alpha male type, my mother and grandmother. They were strong people and they instilled in us high moral Christian values. We were taught by example that in life if you don't put in, don't expect much reward in return.I was educated at Charles S. Deneen grammar school and Chicago Vocational high school. I joined the U.S. Army upon graduation and as a result of my military experience, in conjunction with what I had been taught at home, I made the transition into manhood. During the years that have transpired, I have lived my life on a daily basis with a no-nonsense approach. Accepting life on its own terms and facing it down.I am a man who believes that what reflects from the inside indicates how well the individual is fighting his inner battles. The battle in which he seeks to win his immortality by way of salvation or suffer a defeat that is equally eternal.A conflict fought on a battlefield where sometimes the lines are drawn so thin that if he is not careful, he may inadvertently step across into what is un-fondly referred to as the dark side.I believe that if your selected weaponry is a full knowledge of what is right, fair, honest, and true, the power of God will intercede in your behalf, securing a guarantee of your victory, assuring your salvation, and during the interim, as I aforementioned, your life will reflect the path you have taken. In my writing, this is the fundamental message I attempt to express.Melvin L. Jones

Healthy, I loved running and walking for hours on end. Relaxing feeling as the wind blowing through my hair, listening to music through earphones, without a care in the world. Teaching early morning aerobics at 5:30 a.m., enjoyable never a problem, enjoyed dancing to the music. One decision driving home from work changed my life forever. Should I wait for the accident ahead to clear, or take an alternate route home? I took the alternate route. Technically, was this meant to be, or is this my punishment for being so impatient?Fender bender accident, whiplash from behind, nothing too serious (at least that's what I thought at first), pushed into the car in front, my car looked like an accordion. Both ends of my car were crushed. Slammed my left side of my head and ear, not sure where they hit as everything happened so fast. Instantly, my left ear kept ringing; it wouldn't stop ringing. It was impossible to sleep. I retired to bed fine. I woke up the following morning in a complete silent world. Trying to sleep in total silence was becoming a nightmare; becoming afraid of the dark as my mind imagines dangers I cannot control, creating panic attacks, and restless sleep. I lived in fear of trying to sleep as my mind never shuts off. My mind wanders looking for something it can never find, often times waking up in a cold sweat, screaming out for help.Tested with an MRI to diagnose a brain tumour, stroke, MS, spinal tap testing for meningitis-all clear. A mystery medically still never solved. Retired to bed fine, no ear ache (never had any) and woke up deaf. Only legible medical cause has to be the fender bender whiplash accident, no other explanation. I've never suffered with any ear problems my entire life, never an ear ache, infection, nothing."If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward" (Martin Luther King Jr.).

  • - Examining Mission and Integrity

I decided to write these police stories to share with others and to give some insight into how police work and feel. I described real events from my view as a police officer. I also considered the perspectives of others affected by police actions and inactions. For those who are thinking about a career in law enforcement, I hope that this book provides some information to assist you with this serious decision. For those who are already in law enforcement, I hope this helps maintain high levels of honor and commitment. I also hope you accept that you have flaws in your organization and bring it to a higher level. Motivating hardened police officials to raise standards and to motivate peers is a formidable challenge.By reading this book, I hope that citizens and law enforcement personnel will expect high standards in the law enforcement professionals serving their community. I hope that this book either helps you improve the integrity in your organization or encourages people without integrity to find another career. With utmost respect for those who do this job well,G. "My life is a mess." "I really don't know what to do now." "I think I'm going to explode."I wish that I had a nickel for every time I have heard these expressions. We have all felt confusion at some point in our lives. Whether it's at home, at work, or in public, the decisions we make shouldn't be that difficult. This is a very fast paced world we live in nowadays. Every once in a while, we need to just slow down and take a look around. Society tends to complicate our lives.Get a Grip is nothing other than my collection of thoughts on how I believe one should approach certain situations in life. From raising children to reaching retirement, my opinions may not be for everyone. Opinions are like _ _ _ holes and everybody has one.Hope you enjoy my book.

  • - The Brambley Family Archive- Letters, Documents, and Photographs, 1814 to 1928
av Kenneth Jackson & Grace Alice Brambley Jackson

The letters include tragedies of Dickensian nature and scale, but unlike Charles Dickens's tales, they're not fiction. They are supplemented by eighty-six documents, photographs, and ephemera. With one exception, the letters have not been subjected to historians' interpretations and inferences. This provides inquisitive readers the opportunity to form their own inferences and conclusions from primary source documents.Ebenezer Brambley (1815-1884). Described as a hellfire and brimstone preacher, he brought his wife and nine surviving children to America knowing America was on the brink of war-he knew seven states had already seceded from the Union.Samuel Brambley (1845-1928). After his mother died in 1889, while his siblings were fighting over the silver service, he collected the family Bible and his father's collection of letters. And family oral history says he never threw away a letter.
