  • av Brian J Woznicki
    236,-

I know this sounds a bit cliche, but life truly is a journey. It evidences as a unique sojourn for every individual person. This is the story of a child born seventy years ago. It is a story of triumph and setbacks, of joy and sorrow, of weakness and strength. But most of all, it is a story of courage. Brian J. Woznicki was born with cerebral palsy. He was dealt a very difficult hand in life. This is the tale of his determination, the strong support of his parents and friends, his experiences with the Boy Scouts of America, his education, family, and friends, and his great gift of intelligence.Brian's life is pregnant with lessons of courage, strength, authenticity, and love. However, it is also a tale of significant lapses in judgment, weakness, and vulnerability. Running through it all is the strong cord of Brian's Roman Catholic faith, which has seen him fall from grace with a great collapse and helped him regain his posture of goodness and love to regain the moral high ground.Brian's life shows living evidence of Nietzsche's assertion: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." His life is a roller-coaster ride. I suggest you fasten your seat belts.

  • - How the Teachers' Union Destroyed Our Schools
    av Bill Pirkle
    236,-

Mr. Pirkle has a degree in mathematics. He was an emergency substitute teacher for over three years, teaching when regular substitutes weren't available. During that time, he taught all grades from kindergarten to twelfth grade. This included teaching advanced placement classes and special education.Appalled by what he saw, especially in grades 7 through 12, he began attending school board meetings and making suggestions on how to improve the schools. He also wrote "The Pirkle Report" for his local paper, trying to explain to the public what was going on.The school board refused to even consider his suggestions, suggestions coming from a man who, unlike the school board members, had actually been there in the classroom. He realized that the school board was afraid to make any changes that might upset the teachers' union. This book will show that the teachers' union actually controls and runs the schools. So Mr. Pirkle decided to write this book to show the public and, particularly, the parents what is going on in schools and why we can't solve the education problem. His suggestions are in this book so that the reader can judge for themselves.Mr. Pirkle believes that more money is not the answer; rather, we need to improve the learning environment. Schools have to be more serious and more professional, and less social and less fun. His solutions cost no money. He feels that this is the problem since everyone involved wants more money and are not interested in discussing free solutions. This book will open your eyes.

The Vietnam War comes alive in this real-life story of a young, small-town American boy who quickly became a man with a purpose as a helicopter pilot who survived the ravages of war, made instant life-and-death decisions, earned a Purple Heart for combat wounds, and changed his life forever.Life was different in the 1960s for teenage boys facing life decisions as a youth. Young men got married, left home at eighteen or younger, started families, went to war, and many died before reaching age twenty-five. In fact, many U.S. Army helicopter pilots did not survive the war as they served in one of the most dangerous and deadly jobs in the Vietnam War.Facing war was horrific--but learning to fly, making lifetime buddies, and experiencing the Vietnam War as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot was a life-changing adventure for Lew Hudspeth. His one-year tour of duty in South Vietnam in 1967 was filled with many elements, including terrifying and thrilling moments with breathless fear; intense sadness for fellow soldiers who did not survive; a strong, patriotic desire to fulfill his military duty to his country; a willingness to make the necessary sacrifices for freedom without complaining; and a powerful feeling of young, invincible strength and courage to overcome all obstacles to achieve the mission, no matter what. This coming of age story is truly inspiring for all of our young warriors--or for those who strive to become one.

  • - A Brief History of African Slave Songs in the Americas
    av Truuke M Ameigh
    260,-

When the Spirit Says Sing! tells the fascinating story of spirituals and their relationship to enslaved people of the United States, the Bahamas, and Mexico. It begins with the voyage from Africa as it explores the earliest remnants of African song, surviving in America as the ring shout, native to South Carolina and Georgia. Most of the spirituals mentioned in the book, including ring shouts, are accompanied by printed lyrics and suggestions for listening on the web. Performers recommended for listening include Kathleen Battle, Mahalia Jackson, Paul Robeson, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and Moses Hogan. The book covers a wide range of topics, including slave arrivals from Africa, the Underground Railroad, codes and symbols in spirituals, the development of different styles, and the relationship between religion and slavery in the South. The author also describes the roles of abolitionists, stationmasters, and conductors on the Underground Railroad. Each of the abovementioned is accompanied by the depiction of at least one, and usually several, relevant spirituals. When the Spirit Says Sing! celebrates spirituals as a compelling expression of art and culture. Those with little knowledge of this music will find themselves informed, and those well acquainted with it will find new material to explore. It delves deeply and comprehensively into the role of singing in the lives of enslaved people and is accessible to both novices and scholars.

  • - A Worldview through a Philanthropic Lens
    av Lorenzo Alexander Chambers
    290,-

For the Good of All and to the Harm of None is a nonfiction writing that proposes viewing the world through a philanthropic lens and what that could mean for humanity. Using the definition of philanthropy as engaging in endeavors that advance the well-being of humanity, we must address the idea of what constitutes humanity in the face of the social construct of race. Until the thought process of every human being begins with the identification that we are all human beings first and we are affiliated with our tribe or ethnic heritages second, there will always be oppression and inequities among us.The idea of existentialism compels us to look at our lives through the lens of being mortals in that one day we will die and leave this earth. Within this context, a pressing question becomes since one day I will leave this planet, what do I believe happens after I leave the planet? How would I be remembered, if I am remembered at all? The answers to this question give us a reason and purpose or intention with regard to how we live. Or in the absence of all of the above, maybe we live reckless, unintentional lives because what does anything really mean? At the end of the day, examining your life choices from the perspective that one day it ends can be incentive enough to change how you live and how you/we treat one another as human beings.

  • - Tales of Trips, Travails, Traumas, Tours, Triumphs, Transits, Treks, Truths, Traipses, Trip Ups, Tasties, Treasures, and Touristy Tips As Told by Typical Traveling Tattletellers
    av Robin Dohrman Ayers
    390,-

For the last umpty years, upon our return from trips/vacations/adventures, our friends have waited with bated breaths to learn what we'd gotten ourselves into after realizing we seemed to be unable to travel without incident. This always leads to recalls from us, often with wild hand gestures. They have respectfully allowed us to go on and on about what we'd gotten ourselves into most recently. Now, maybe our friends were just being nice, but they have been nonetheless reinforcing these little humorous slices off the norm. In and of themselves individually, no one of these tales is terribly exciting. However, in a collection, there certainly was plenty of material from which to draw!To legitimize the stories, I felt they intimated teaching moments. Hence, I included "touristy tips," and lest it should be too terribly boring, Tasties wandered their ways in with the stories.

Writing has always been my emotional support and spiritual comfort. Being able to verbalize how I'm feeling through writing has always been an amazing experience for me and will continue to be. Not having many friends, I would just sit and write as a child and later as an adult, which has kept me at a level of emotional stability. I praise God for my gift of loving to write in my own way.

I started to look at the bucket list of things that I wanted to do before dying, and the voice of the Camino de Santiago started calling me. Two weeks later, I was on this old-fashioned pilgrimage trail with my backpack.

  • - Implications for Society's Energy Systems
    av Rex J Fleming
    680,-

Dr. Rex J. Fleming received his B.S. degree from Creighton University with a major in mathematics. He later obtained a M.S. and Ph.D. from the U. of Michigan in the field of Atmospheric Science. He has over 50 years of experience in weather and climate research. His Ph.D. thesis involved the study of energy interactions within the atmosphere and a stochastic dynamic method of improving our understanding of those atmospheric interactions in light of uncertain initial conditions. The world is in chaos now due to the deliberate false theory that our climate is being warmed by the use of fossil fuel. Many countries are deeply concerned with energy issues -- will there be enough energy resources available to keep people warm through the coming winter periods? There have been many previous exaggerated claims that climate change warming was bad for mankind. The opposite is true --- warmer periods have been very beneficial for humankind. The latest claim from the United Nations (UN) is that the world will burn up with a 5-alarm fire unless the world stops using fossil fuel by a critical date is almost comical -- but one cannot laugh as this false theory has now reached a very serious point - there are no efficient alternatives to fossil fuels and a cold regime is coming! Not every year in a cold regime is severe, but in the coldest periods deaths may result if energy is not sufficiently available. Weather and the climate are chaotic! There is rarely a sharp line between the end of a warm period and the start of a cool period. There can be a discernable transition -- between the end of a warm period and the beginning of a cold period, hence the title of this book! A three-year transition was seen at the end of the Medieval Warming Period (900 AD - 1300 AD) and the beginning of the Little Ice Age (1303 -1850) during which millions died of starvation from famines. This current cold climate transition is described in this book. Will there be a 4th year of transition or the actual start of the Modern Cooling (2023 --?).While there is considerable information contained in this book, perhaps the single most relevant point is formulated in Chapter 10, page 90. Here we have the summary of the important physical evidence, the appropriate statistical data, and the effects of chaos rolled into a single statement about the next severe cold period likely occurring in 2030 +- 4 years.

Exploits and Opportunities of an Airman is about the adventures through travel throughout Central America and the northern and southern parts of Europe, exploiting the current and historical. It is also about how having a family changes your outlook and values that you place on yourself, those around you, and your career. By bettering yourself with knowledge and credentials, you open doors for chances to prove something not only to others but also to oneself! The opportunities of this book are explained.I was fortunate that those who went before me were willing and able to pass on their knowledge so I could build upon that knowledge and experience. While I was TDY in Panama, we had an old Black man who was our line chief. Some people would look at that as a derogatory statement. Yes, he was a Black man--but he was more, so much more. He was a wise and knowledgeable man. He knew his job, he knew the plane, and he knew how to handle young men. He is one of the men to whom this book is dedicated. It was about working together to ensure that we had planes in the air to help those in need. It was "Work hard and play hard." I carried those thoughts with me my whole career! While in Panama Canal, I had the opportunities to experience the wonder of the canal, as well as the devastation to those individuals who helped build it. I played on a golf course that was made through a dense forest. If your ball went into the woods, you did not go in to get it. I learned that first thing in the morning, you did not just go into the wheel well of a plane--it could have a nasty large snake or lizard that crawled up in there during the night. All in all, Panama was a fascinating and vibrant country.Working on airplanes and then watching them take off after you had repaired it gives you such a feeling of accomplishment that is rarely felt. When you add the knowledge that the plane is heading to help someone, there is no greater feeling. I have been an aviation enthusiast since I was ten and my neighbor would take me to the Frederick airport in western Maryland. Today, it is the AOPA (Airmen Owners and Pilots Association) headquarters. Being in the Air Force has afforded me the opportunity to play with airplanes and enjoy my other passion for travel.Through my travels, I had looked inside of live volcanoes that erupted nine months later. I was able to see the villas in Sicily that were used in the Godfather movies. On the other hand, I was in Morocco six months after we attacked Libya the first time, and I traveled all the way down to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
