What do biological weapons and playing cards have in common?Usually, not much. But in A. D. Pollard's thrilling new novel, Aces to Kings, a deck of cards may be all that stands in the way of humanity's destruction. Well, cards and the determination of three best friends.Terrence, Charlotte, and Nick are living pretty normal, albeit a little boring, lives-until things get more exciting than they ever could have imagined: they uncover a plot to release a biological weapon made by an international megacorporation. Fortunately, they also discover a deck of playing cards with the ability to predict the future. Now they just need to figure out how to use them so they can save humanity...Though Aces to Kings is full of subtle magic and unique abilities, it's grounded in reality: the complexity of human relationships, ethical dilemmas and moral uncertainties, corporate corruption, and, of course, friendship. The book's everyday magic is plausible; the true revelations come in the form of an authentic narrative and relatable characters who will move readers to consider, and maybe even reimagine, their own life choices and possibilities.

Shun Mie Shee's Essential Aborigine Food Cures offers a new perspective on staying healthy by using the unique food wisdom of the ancient aborigine culture that has been on the island that is now Taiwan for over six thousand years. Shun Mie's father was the healing "doctor" of her mountain village, and while growing up she learned from him these natural food remedies that kept his villagers healthy or returned them to health when necessary. Health conscious readers will learn here, for example, how to extract the oil from an egg yolk to treat burns, to cure insomnia, to stop vomiting, and to end the discomfort of a woman recovering from a miscarriage. Readers will learn that the fresh roots of day lilies can be eaten to relieve the discomfort of arthritis, and they'll learn how to prepare grapefruit peels and brown olives to treat morning sickness. This handy manual of aborigine natural food remedies -- never available before now -- offers simple cures for every ailment from diarrhea to diabetes, from psoriasis to shingles...all laid out in convenient alphabetical order. The author also tells why the Western obsession with the fat, vitamin, sugar, and protein content of foods may be less important than matching the energy of a specific food to a person's own body type. Shun Mie shows readers how to do this so that they can keep their systems in balance -- or return them to balance -- for continuous long term health.Essential Aborigine Food Cures offers hundreds of new, unique aborigine remedies to those seeking only natural methods to heal themselves and to keep themselves healthy.

It's Gonna Rain is a story about a church playing church and it's coming soon to a church near you if it ain't already there! Welcome to Slippery Rock Baptist Church pastored by The Reverend James 'Too Slick' Jones. It's just a typical Sunday Morning Worship Service. The choir is singing, the preacher is whooping and The Spirit is moving. All is well and there's nothing out of the ordinary on this typical Sunday, except for the visitation of three interesting gentlemen. Slippery Rock is a small church, where everybody knows everybody and everybody's family, and they rarely have visitors, especially visitors that no one knows. As they would reveal, they are there to meet with Reverend Jones and offer him the opportunity of a lifetime. Surely he can't say "No" to becoming the new spiritual leader of the world! With this opportunity he will be able to serve both God and man, therefore fulfilling his life's passion! The cons: The lust for power, money and the temptation of sex. Yes, Pastor Jones has been tempted as a minister and pastor, but his love for God and his wife has always helped him to maintain his integrity and moral standards, which is why he has been selected by the three gentlemen to become the leader of their spiritual movement! He didn't apply for the job, nor did he have to in their eyes! He's not in this game for what he can personally gain, but in it for the sole purpose of serving The Almighty! But having to deal with the particular issues that come his way, along with the politics that exist in the church house poses the question, is the office of The Heavenly Called, the anointed and the standards within it too much to bear even for those who have the sincerest of intentions? The doors of the church are open! Whosoever will, let him come!

In 1921, an Italian immigrant named Sabato Rodia purchased a property in Watts, California, and started building a series of sculptures and decorative features in his backyard, including three open, pyramidal-shaped towers - two of which are nearly 100 feet tall. Though Rodia referred to his creation as Nuestro Pueblo (Our Town), today, it is known collectively as the Watts Towers. Constructed over 35 years, Watts Towers remains a marvel of structural engineering and architecture and is widely recognized as one of the finest examples of "outsider art" or "land-based" art in the United States. Rodia abandoned his property in 1954 never to return. Over the years Watts Towers has experienced a long history of vandalism and neglect punctuated by major conservation campaigns and interventions. This book describes in great detail the history of these preservation efforts with a view to collecting and synthesizing all available information into one coherent study.

This is a satirical fairytale for the 21st century. Troglodytes Watch is the Winter Wren, a direct descendant of the dinosaurs. It survived the calamitous upheaval caused by the meteorite perhaps because it was as it still is: a diminutive, secretive and watchful spirit. The substance of this tale begins with three ancestors who escape from a tribe of headhunters in Borneo around 700 B.C. and ends with some of their descendants on a nuclear waste dump island in the northwest Pacific Ocean where they are prepared to wait out the next evolution-changing, life-arresting calamitous upheaval. The foibles, frolics and conflicts of the various peoples are witnessed, narrated, and influenced by the spirit of Troglodytes. This tale is infused with some literary, some facetious and some deliciously infuriating commentary. The figures are drawn by the writer and the foreign words and expressions should be no burden to the Reader. Relax, read and enjoy the book.

The late nineteenth century, known commonly as the "Gilded Age," produced some of the most beautiful yet controversial architecture in America's history. The great influencers of the period, including Richard Upjohn, Henry Hobson Richardson, and Charles McKim, each spread the gospel of his own architectural style. The result was an eclectic mix of styles that some detested but that others embraced. Caught in the struggle to find an architecture America could claim as its own, Hartford, Connecticut architect William Brocklesby carved out his own stylistic path. In an age when the taste for ostentation and pretension was adopted by many, William Brocklesby produced some of the most dignified and beautiful architecture in the Connecticut Valley. His churches, libraries, and theaters remain as artistic landmarks throughout western New England, and his work at colleges from Hartford to Amherst, Massachusetts make for some of the most picturesque college campuses in America. This book serves as a companion to the author's earlier book, Asher Benjamin, American Architect, Author, Artist. Taken together, the two books provide a view of developments in American architecture from 1790 to 1910. The Architecture of William C. Brocklesby Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, architect William C. Brocklesby (1847-1910) spent his career designing beautiful yet dignified churches, libraries, and public buildings throughout the Connecticut River Valley and western New England. Working in an age when ostentation was the rule rather than the exception, Brocklesby maintained a restrained hand in the application of ornament. His design ofForbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts stands out as a monument to his ability as a design architect. In addition, William Brocklesby was among a handful of nineteenth century architects who made the Connecticut River Valley the birthplace of the prototypical American college campus. Working largely within the vision of the famed American landscape architects Andrew Jackson Downing and Frederick Law Olmstead, Brocklesby and others built campuses that were meant to mimic the traditional New England village. "Through the designs of the college buildings by Peabody and Stearns and William Brocklesby, Smith College's architectural history traces the development of late nineteenth-century styles." - National Register of Historic Places Inventory

The town of Silver Slopes was once a winter wonderland, offering all the activities a blanket of snow affords. Why would a winter village be deprived of a snowfall year after year? The villagers are hopeful, but the clouds above are determined to find the answer to that question. Fluff and Buff, the feathery clouds assigned to the sky above Silver Slopes, have two immediate problems: first, they long to be a part of a beautiful white snowfall, and secondly, they need to release the unwieldy and restless snowflakes they house. Afterall, it isn't natural to create snowflakes only to release them as raindrops. Fluff travels to the Castle of all Seasons, to meet with Mother Nature seeking answers and help. What they learn about how one villager is causing the problem is not as surprising as the solution nature provides.

From a Norwegian perspective, and by focusing on the Special Operations Forces component within the Norwegian Armed Forces, this book provides a scholar-practitioner's perspective on how to increase the strategic utility of different types of military efforts in an SSA context. The overarching project encompasses a wide range of elements for understanding the contemporary security environment and, in particular, how the military component fits into the strategic picture within an international context for small states. It shows that small states must be aware of the different limitations for existing strategic options for the various actors involved. It also outlines the strategic utility of potential niche capabilities, and how elements within the Norwegian Armed Forces can take on a strategic, enabling role for Norway, bilateral partners, and even coalitions in future conflicts. Small State Irregular Warfare in the Twenty-First Century serves as both a guide and a handbook on how small states might utilize SSA as an instrument of national power to meet national strategic objectives.

While this book is about America in 2028 under a socialist government that no longer provides protection for its citizens and no longer believes public should have the right to protect themselves. That no longer believes our Constitution and Bill of Rights means the same as it did one hundred or even fifty years ago. Then calls this progress with their new ideas of how the nation should be run. While discarding old definitions to replace with their new interpretations. Forgetting past promises to balance the budget, control government spending. Free speech is redefined and limited; gun ownership is restricted to firearms that do not pose a problem against law enforcement. Even then very strict enforcement of very restrictive laws applies. Inter-structure means paying for government programs as well as repairing roads, dams, bridges and all it meant in the past. A time when Citizenship means nothing, and any human with their feet on American soil, all have the same rights. A time when inflation has grown so bad that retirement funds are valueless. Then only a small percentage of Americans are able to maintain a small standard of living in 2028.A time when opposition to the government is treason.

This book is about two unknown gunfighters, Herman John (The Colorado Kid) Tomlin and Howard Price (The Utah Kid) Tomlin, who became the world's best and fastest gunfighters. It tells about their adventures while traveling on a wagon train from Illinois to Colorado. They both pan for gold on Clear Creek near Black Hawk, Colorado. In the 1st Colorado Cavalry Regiment, they fought in Indian wars against the Chiricahua Apache. Were gold guards on a stage from Deadwood, South Dakota, to First National Bank in Denver, Colorado? They were deputies in Deadwood, South Dakota. They were doing show performances in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. When they walked the streets or came to town, they never looked for trouble, but if you back them in a corner, with their lightning speed of fast draw and fire, you were dead before you could blink an eye.
