This book provides a rich, multidimensional analysis of how prostate cancer is lived, treated, and perceived by different actors through the stages of care, rehabilitation, and recovery. Furthermore, it focuses on how side effects, such as urinary leakage and impotence, affects the construction of masculinity. Though the book foregrounds men treated for prostate cancer, it also includes the voices of partners and health care professionals, such as urologists, contact nurses, and sexual health counsellors. The focus is on both phenomenological aspects of prostate cancer-how the disease affects men's self-perception and lifestyle-and on sociological aspects-that is, how gender and masculinity are understood and negotiated in social situations/interactions. Situated within the field of critical studies on men and masculinity the book engages in an intersectional analysis of the relationship between prostate cancer, class, and ageing masculinities, as well as providing an analysis of the complex relational triad created when voices of treated men, their partners, and health care professionals are brought together.

This book is an inquiry into whether what Blake called his 'visions' can be attributed to recognizable perceptual phenomena. The conditions identified include visual hallucinations (some derived from migraine aura), and auditory and visual hallucinations derived from several types of synaesthesia. Over a long period of time, Blake has been celebrated as a 'visionary, ' yet his 'visions' have not been discussed. Through three intense episodes of manipulation and mayhem connected to idea systems-Europe's witch hunts, the Mao Zedong-era "revolutions," and the early campaign of the U.S. War on Terror-this book charts the cognitive and informational matrices that seize control of people's mentalities and behaviors across societies. Through these, the author reaches two conclusions. The first, that we are all vulnerable to the dominating influence of our own matrices of ideas and to those woven by others in the social system. The second, that even the most masterful manipulators of idea programs may lose control of the outcomes of programmatic manipulation. This volume offers a media-theoretically oriented perspective on the Space Race. It analyzes feature films, documentaries, live television coverage, magazines, stamps, posters, ticker-tape parades. They visualized the Space Race in a specific way and circulated it transnationally from 'East' to 'West' and from 'West' to 'East' across the 'Iron Curtain'. It will be shown how reporting on the Space Race between 1955 and 1975 can be explained as a globalizing history of the intertwining of images during the Cold War.

Reflecting the growing interest of historians in memory studies, this edited collection examines the relationship between memory and global social movements from 1848 to the present. For a long time, there has been little attempt by historians to consider memory and social activism in an integrated, systematic, and comparative way. At a time of change in the international system, this book examines how non-traditional leading nations from the Global South have fared to date and what the chances are of their rise to continue. Discussions of Coward's achievement in the theatre between 1920 and 1966 have tended to stay with the colourful biography. The more analytical literary approach adopted here places Coward's success in its wider theatrical context, making the connections with the work of other dramatists. He developed his technique according to what worked with theatre audiences. Taking up the well-made play, he brought in a more colloquial dialogue, explored, for instance, the morality and psychology of marriage and free love, and frequently exploited the dramatic possibilities of characters grouped into two camps. Since its 1967 production of Vanbrugh's The Relapse, the Royal Shakespeare Company has been the world's leading producer of Restoration Comedies. This book is the first to document and critique the company's history of engagement with that repertoire. It reviews the spaces in which productions have been performed, design principles, casting, voicing, textual adaptation, musical direction, actor perspectives, and the problems of how to confront, adopt or depart from received notions of Restoration style. It goes on to posit that, for all the RSC's explorations of Restoration Comedy, the company has maintained the repertoire as a fringe interest played out in niche spaces, while recycling many of the assumptions it claims to challenge, and that what is needed is the writer-led intervention seen in RSC and National Theatre adaptations of French drama from the same period. Only then can Restoration Comedy begin to engage wider audiences in new sites of political, historical andcultural meaning.
