Attack Transport, first published in 1946, recounts the activities of the U.S.S. DOYEN (APA-1) in the Pacific during World War Two. Attack transport ships were critical to the success of the beach landings as they carried troops and their equipment directly to the assault beaches. During the course of the war, the U.S.S. Doyen traveled more than 100,000 miles, and took part in many Pacific battles including Saipan and Iwo Jima. Its crew and passengers were members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Army. The book, written by an officer on-board the Doyen, attempts, in the author's words, "to do but one thing - to describe the war in the Pacific as it was seen from one small unit of the fleet. It is not an analytical discussion of policies, but merely an account of the day-to-day life. Combat has been kept in its proper relation to other activities." Attack Transport captures what the men of the Doyen saw and felt - from loneliness and boredom, to the unbounded optimism and humor, to the horror and carnage of the war. Arise to Conquer, first published in 1942, is author Ian Gleed's account of his service in the Royal Air Force at the beginning of World War II. At the time, Gleed, only 23 years old, was one of the R.A.F.'s most experienced fliers and was immediately given the position of flight commander. Yet, the life of an R.A.F. pilot in the initial months of the war, with experience or not, was not easy: just four months after war had broken out, his Spitfire broke up while flying leaving him falling to earth from 18,000 ft without a plane; fortunately, he still had his parachute. After recovering from his injuries he was transferred to 87 Squadron, based in France, and there shot down two Me-110, one definite Bf 109, another probably Bf 109, two Do 17 bombers, and a shared He 111 bomber. This record, set in two days, made him the fastest R.A.F. pilot to become an ace.Over the course of his service, Wing Commander Ian Gleed DSO, DFC, shot down thirteen enemy planes. He served in both the Battle of France and Battle of Britain. Tragically he lost his life in combat at the age of twenty-six in Tunisia in 1943.

Double Agent: The Eddie Chapman Story, originally published in 1954, recounts the early life and war-time adventures of Eddie Chapman, later code-named Agent ZigZag by British intelligence. Born into poverty, Chapman joined the army, only to go AWOL in the 1930s. On his own, he took to cracking safes, using his newfound wealth to ingratiate himself with London's elite. He reportedly seduced society ladies, only to later blackmail them. Eventually arrested for safe-cracking, he was jailed in the Channel Islands, the only part of the British Commonwealth to fall under Nazi occupation. Once the Germans took over, Chapman offered his services to the Nazis. He convinced them that he could use his contacts with London's criminal underground to further their goal of having sabotage agents in England. After a year of training in France under Nazi supervision, Chapman was parachuted into England, where he immediately turned himself over to the British. Luckily so, since MI5, which had already broken the German code, knew exactly who Chapman was and what he was sent to England to do. Like the Germans, the British saw an opportunity to use Chapman as their own agent. To convince the Nazis of Chapman's usefulness, MI5 worked with him to fake the bombing of the factory producing the Mosquito bomber, going so far as to plant newspaper stories and create the illusion, when seen from above, of complete devastation. Chapman returned to Germany a hero, with the Nazis awarding him - the only British subject to receive one - an Iron Cross. MI5 had written at the time: "The Germans came to love Chapman ... but although he went cynically through all the forms, he did not reciprocate. Chapman loved himself, loved adventure, and loved his country, probably in that order." He returned to Britain after the war, preparing several memoirs of his war-time activities. This edition includes several photographs and a new Preface by Steve Chadde.

As suggested in the preface, many who have thought of New Mexico primarily as a hot and dry country will be surprised at the number of ferns to be found there. Most of the state's species are in the massive, wooded mountain ranges. However, there are numerous species able to thrive in desert situations. This manual lists 7 families, 24 genera, and 75 species and varieties of ferns and fern allies (horsetails, clubmosses). However, 11 of the species have not actually been collected in the state though they have been found in similar country in neighboring states and are to be expected in New Mexico. Six species previously reported for New Mexico are excluded. In the main body of the work, following brief notes on the position of the Pteridophyta in the plant kingdom, their general characteristics, and their fossil occurrence in New Mexico, there are keys to families, genera, and species. Also provided are both genera and species descriptions, with information on habitat and general distribution. Essential nomenclature synonymy is also included for each species. The book is illustrated with line drawings which include habit sketches and details of critical characters. Battle Hymn: From Chaplain to Fighter Pilot, first published in 1956, is the inspirational autobiographical account of U.S. Air Force Colonel Dean Hess (born 1917). Hess details his experiences as a combat pilot in both World War Two and the Korean conflict. He flew more than 300 missions over France, Germany, and Korea and received numerous decorations from both the U.S. and Korean governments. His service was the subject of the 1957 film of the same name, starring Rock Hudson.Prior to the Second World War, Hess was a Protestant minister living in Marietta, Ohio. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hess came to believe that it was not right to ask members of his congregation to fight if he was not prepared to go himself - not as a chaplain but as a combatant.In Korea, in addition to flying combat missions, Hess undertook the daunting task of organizing and training a South Korean air force. He is also remembered for his part in the so-called "Kiddy Car Airlift," the rescue of nearly 1,000 orphans and 80 orphanage staff from the path of the advancing Chinese in December 1950. Although Hess' actual role in the airlift has been somewhat criticized, Hess donated proceeds from Battle Hymn (both the book and movie) to charities helping Korean children. Included are 10 pages of photographs and maps.
