  • - A Walk in the Park
    av Northport Arts Coalition
    400,-

The Northport Village Poetry Path was born as a dream. A dream to bring poetry off the pages of books and out of the confines of reading rooms. A dream to bring poetry into the open air for the entire Village to enjoy. And it was clear this dream was shared. When Northport Arts Coalition put out the call, the Long Island poetry community responded whole-heartedly with fifty-six submissions. Twelve were chosen to be displayed for the path's inaugural year and three were named honorable mentions to be included in this book. The art that accompanies them was created especially for each poem by Long Island artists.Wherever you are when you read these poems, let your imagination take you to the beautiful harborside park where they're displayed. Let yourself savor them as you stroll slowly from one to the next to the next, shaded by centuries old trees and serenaded by seabirds. Let them take you to new places and fill you with new thoughts.

It's hard to believe that I've written Volume 2 of My Pandemic Paradox, A Memoir, of over 71,000 words. If you had told me when I turned 85 that this was about to happen, I would have responded simply, "Never!" But solitude and idleness can work wonders on one's creative instincts. It's more fun to have a project than a day of watching TV. So, like taking the first step toward any goal is always followed by Step 2, I continued writing even after the publishing of Volume 1 was underway. Volume 2 is now at the publisher's. I'm approaching 92, and thinking about switching to writing fiction. There are 92 blogs, by coincidence the same number as my age, in this book, divided into three sections. The divisions are based on different times in my life. First" UnderPinnings," my youth-related years, then "Livin' the Life", stories about adulthood, and finally, "Aging and Moving Forward." Other than that, there is no particular order. One is free to read any interesting title such as, "THE MYSTERIOUS EFFECTS OF A NEW SHOWER CURTAIN," "THE TYRANNY of PARENTHOOD" or "A LITTLE SCOTCH MAKES MY DAY." I hope my experiences match some of yours and will motivate you to delve into memories, the painful, and the joyous. All to enrich your lives. One of my precious topics is about what happens next, the future.I was born in NYC, went to P.S.187, then Music & Art High School (now part of LaGuardia High School), where I was a music student, Syracuse University, majoring in Economics, and finally Fairleigh Dickinson University for a Master's degree in General and Experimental Psychology.Besides, I became a certified Life Coach, studied dance, played the flute, took acting lessons, volunteered with dementia patients, and took lessons in Chinese cooking, figure skating, and Japanese Flower Arranging. I had two husbands, three children, ten grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren.

Barbara, an American divorcée, moves to France in 2003 on an adventure of self-discovery. She buys an 18th century farmhouse in need of renovation in a tiny French hamlet. While settling in and visiting the attractions of the area, she meets and mingles with a mix of charming characters in her new community. On the lookout for a man to share her life, she explores the romantic possibilities of her new home. As she says, "I am willing to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince." In between chipping away at the farmhouse improvements and building a new life for herself, Barbara reviews and reevaluates some of her preconceptions. There are flashbacks to the late '60's when she was a foreign exchange student in Paris and to her work as a tour guide in the late 2000's shepherding groups around the lesser-known and famous sights of France. The book reveals many engaging tidbits about French life and history as it recounts the story of Barbara's self-actualization and her discovery of the ideal mate.

A long-ago walk on Lucas Brook remembered . . . a time when life was unambiguous . . . the certainty of youth . . . a path followed . . . discovery . . . the betrayal of false friends . . . a certainty eroded. Sometimes, reaching back far enough to a time of certainty can help you understand who you are in the present, and maybe who you're not. At times I felt as though I was in the mindset of my earlier self and at others like a stranger in a strange land. Was it a dream; a reality; a butterfly or a man? This story is about the end of an era, as viewed through the lives of a few Long Island youths living on a mountain at the end of Vermont"s communal movement. There, they chance upon a historical discovery, find an unknown old-growth forest and encounter the world's largest cannon-so this a historical novel. But these tales are based on memories and are as accurate as four-decade-old memories can be. Remembrances although culled over several years, are rarely stored in volumes; they are just snippets, sometimes triggering new memories. Maybe this is a memoir. Yet as memories fill in, the influence of a muse is not always clear, as descriptive fiction is added linking it all together. I confess a small portion has been influenced by extreme creative license. So, perhaps this is a straight-up fiction. Especially since all of the names have been changed. Besides some fiction will provide cover for those who want it. Either way, enjoy the ride.

They knew they were close to exposing the murderer, but someone was holding all the jokers. In June of 1956, Lily and her sister-in-law Syd are looking forward to another blissful summer with their families at the Bungalow Colony in the Catskill Mountains. But their hopes for a tranquil vacation are shattered when Lily accidentally stumbles on secret information, and a dead body is discovered in an abandoned bathtub. As the body count rises, Lily, Syd, and their Mahjongg partners Ruthie and Mary, uncover a sinister web of blackmail and intrigue with roots in the lingering dark shadows of World War II. Careful not to expose the secret, or further endanger the innocent blackmail victims, the "Mahjongg Ladies" sift through a surprising number of people who could be guilty. All the while they continue doing their daily chores, attending the children's day camp events, creating the Saturday night extravaganzas, and most especially not missing even one of their daily Mahjongg games.Drawing on the ten summers she and her family spent at a bungalow colony in the Catskill Mountains, Ms. Bernfield has crafted a charming memoir/mystery. In 1950s America, Jewish families were still excluded from many summer resorts; to avoid the heat they escaped in droves to a vibrant community in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. In towns like Monticello and Ellenville, alongside flashy hotels like The Concord, Grossinger's, and Kutcher's, dozens of cozy Kuchalayn (Bungalow colonies) had sprung up to welcome them. It is in one of these that the shocking events in Mahjongg and Murder take place.

The Upstate D.A. sets forth the recollections of the Steuben County Prosecutor about his three years as the county's chief law enforcement officer. They were busy and exciting times, coming at the beginning of the Great Depression and at the end of the Great Experiment - National Prohibition.Among the 400 crimes he prosecuted in those three years were murders, robberies, arsons, assaults, extortions, and many lesser crimes. On the occasion of his death, thirty-five years later, the local paper described George W. Pratt as "a fighting district attorney who took a lead in stamping out crime rather than following after-the-fact. He was the key force in the prosecution or investigation of 11 murders during his tenure as prosecutor. He smashed an arson ring threatening the whole county. * * * Few Steuben County attorneys * * * were as colorful and aggressive as the white-maned lawyer whose vitality added strength to whatever pursuit in which he engaged." His stories accurately reflect the difficult economic times, the division in the country over prohibition, and the inner workings of a small-town law enforcement effort. At the time, an upstate D.A. was a one-man operation. He had no assistants, and personally investigated many of the crimes, and with all that went to trial, he prepared the cases and tried them, usually to a jury. In many of the cases described, the reader gets an inside view of the strategies and maneuvering of opposing counsel, and yes, even of some of the tricks they try to spring on each other.

How does one get over the shattering pain of a broken heart? The death of a relationship through any means causes such pain and we will do anything to get over it. The question is, how? This book was inspired, not just by my work as a clinical psychologist dealing with clients who have suffered terrible heartbreaks, but by my own personal experiences and those of friends.I am a clinical psychologist who has been in private practice for over thirty years. I am blind, having lost my sight slowly throughout the years and have worked extensively with clients who are disabled, chronically or terminally ill as well as persons who have suffered trauma, loss and profound heartbreak.I believe my own blindness as well as my clinical work with those in unusual life situations adds a unique twist to my book since I have developed a strong understanding and empathy for others suffering such profound heartbreak.

Welcome to "God's Love." This book has been a labor of love between a mother-a retired public school educator and principal-and daughter-also an educator. Both women taught curricula from various Catholic education institutions from kindergarten through eighth grade. Their collaboration provides an outline for teaching young children about Bible stories. The enjoyment, ease, and excitement of learning about God doesn't require special certification-just a love of reading and learning. Easily reproducible drawings provide symbolic representations of the biblical highlights. These simple drawings enhance a child's recall. Visual associations provide an easy reference for children's retention of the stories and self-recitation.Simplified information regarding daily biblical life, foods, toys, and responsibilities/chores is also included. The book is Intentionally succinct, easy to follow, with limited page size for easy transport, child friendly size and type. References to culture, languages and musical instruments are included to inspire further study and interest at the time of Jesus' life on earth. These simple reproducible drawings work well with religious instruction students. They can recall whole bible stories from just a glimpse of the symbol/picture associated with them. We hope that "God's Love" inspires both children and teachers to learn together about God and our relationship with God's world and with one another.

The Old Testament, or Hebrew Scriptures, has been a source of spiritual inspiration for hundreds of millions of believers throughout the ages. Center stage in the Old Testament is a body of literature by and about the prophets-messengers of God who tried to keep God's people on the right path. You know their names-Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel-or do you? Are you acquainted with Deborah, Huldah, Miriam and Noadiah? For far too long, the women prophets have never been accorded the respect and attention they deserve, but they delivered God's messages with the same passion, commitment and urgency as the men. This book is written to acknowledge and celebrate them-and put the women-the prophetesses-on the pedestal they deserve to occupy.

A post-apocalyptic thriller, Dead Souls Awakening, answers a crucial question for many believers: Where was the Messiah during the three days when his body lay in a tomb before the Resurrection? Summoned back to earth by humans, the Messiah stands before the Last Judgment, where He is the accused-not outside the gates of Jerusalem but in a courtroom in Las Vegas, Nevada. The novel features dynamic characters, fast-paced action, and contemporary relevance. The current pandemic and the major socio-political changes in the US since 2019 are all interwoven.Author Alexander Suslov has lived in Europe and the United States, including Las Vegas, where much of his latest book takes place. A graduate of Georgetown University, he currently lives in the south of France, where he is working on the second installment of DEAD SOULS AWAKENING. He also draws from his childhood experience in the then-Soviet Union. He notes: "Growing up on the 'wrong' side of the Iron Curtain, I personally witnessed life in an authoritarian state where basic human rights were suppressed in the name of state security." Like dystopian classics 1984 and A Clockwork Orange, this is a warning about how quickly history can repeat itself anywhere in the world at any time.

I received a lot of advice on what to do and how to do it after I lost my 20-year old son, Aaron, to a fatal car accident on Memorial Day in 2010. See a counselor, sign up for a grief group, go here, go there, do this, do that. But I was completely lost and the only thing I knew for sure was that I didn't want to follow any of those suggestions. I was too exhausted because losing my only child was utterly debilitating on every level. One person, however, said something that resonated, "Listen, Mary; work if you want to. Don't work if you don't want to. Just do what you feel like doing for as long as you need to do it." That felt like a license to do exactly what I needed to do and was immensely liberating to me.So I picked up an empty journal and began writing. And I did this because the day of Aaron's funeral, the most amazing things began happening. I knew I had to write them down because otherwise I would risk forgetting them, or worse, I might later tell myself I imagined what was happening. Thirteen years later, I'm still experiencing my son communicating with me in the most creative and mind-bending ways. And others who have left our time have also nudged me and others from across the veil. Defying what we've all been taught about the finality of death and what we consider to be the very black-and-white laws of science, I have discovered that our loved ones can and do reach out to us to let us know they're alive and well and to make sure we know they still care about us.

Most readers of the Bible associate the prophets, as messengers of God, with the Old Testament. God sent them to encourage the Israelites to follow His commandments-or reprimand them when they didn't. And some of them made predictions about the future-that God would send a Savior-the Messiah-to save humanity from its sinfulness and usher in the Kingdom of God.But what about the New Testament? Yes, we know so much about the Twelve Apostles and their central place in the ministry of Jesus, but were there prophets in the New Testament as well? Turns out that there were quite a few, and the roles they played may have been much more multifaceted than serving only as messengers. Are you familiar with Anna and Agabus? How about Silas, Manaen and Lucius? The list goes on and on-and these prophets (and the roles they played) may be one of the best kept secrets in the New Testament! So take a look at what these unsung hand-picked servants of the Lord have to offer!
