The Ottoman sultans had long borne the title of caliphs of Islam, with all the prestigious authority throughout the Muslim world which went with it, and even after the demise of the sultanate in 1922 the caliphate retained great symbolic relevance. The book considers the questions that arose with its abolition, including whether or not the caliphate should be revived, reformed or replaced by other forms of political affiliation and organization. It also assesses related issues concerning identity and legitimate authority, and how to reconcile time-honoured religious institutions and concepts to do with modernity, the nation-state and affiliations of an ethnic and religious nature. It examines the nature of monarchy in the Malay world, which includes present-day Malaysia and Indonesia, before and during the onset of Western colonialism when the Malay world was ruled by a large number of separate Muslim sultanates. The author reconsiders the issue of the "comfort women", that is the Korean women who were compelled to provide sexual comfort to Japanese troops during the Asia-Pacific War. She explores the human complexity of the experiences of these women, who despite terrible exploitation, she feels, cannot and should not only be considered only as passive victims. She sets the issue in context, revealing how Korean society played a role, with patriarchy and middlemen being significant factors in the procurement of comfort women, and how alongside the comfort women there were volunteer labour corps of Korean young women supporting the Japanese war effort. This book is the first comparative law study of collateral consequences of criminal conviction in all federally recognized Indian tribes in the lower 48 U.S. states, and the mechanisms for restoring civil rights in tribal law.Surveying the constitutions, codes, and ordinances of tribal jurisdictions reveals a broad range of consequences - the impact of which has not been comprehensively, and critically, examined. Like state and federal jurisdictions, tribal law attaches thousands of legal disabilities to tribal offices, business licenses and permits, social services, and civil rights for persons with criminal convictions. This book considers the rhetorical strategies used by celebrities and their surrogates and attorneys when faced with claims of sexual misconduct. During the past five years, a series of public figures have claimed that their celebrity persona is distinct from their "real" self as a way of eluding allegations of sexual misconduct in the courthouse and in the court of public opinion. This book examines three case studies in which such claims were employed, namely Terry Bollea/Hulk Hogan, President Donald Trump/Reality Show Host Donald Trump, and R. Kelly/Robert Kelly, to assess the mediated and legal communicative strategies used and their potential implications. Using a technique which the author calls "discursive self-cleaving," these stars strategically craft statements on social media, in the press, and in the courtroom to create a discourse that works to shift blame away from their behavior.
