Few people have any coherent idea of whether the shifts taking place in land-use structure are critically important for us all, or whether they are largely immaterial. This book (originally published in 1981) by setting down a more quantified and carefully researched statement and appraisal of land-use structure and change than had previously been attempted, shows that much of the conventional wisdom about land use can be shown to be incorrect or very suspect. This volumes re-examines the notion of the East Asian peace, arguing that it requires updating for the current and near-future context of US-Chinese rivalry.The 'East Asian peace' refers to the remarkable change in conflict levels in eastern Eurasia over the past eighty years or even the past 130 years or so. Prior to the late 1970s, East Asia was regarded as the most conflictual region on the planet. Although insurgencies have continued in places such as Myanmar, Thailand, and the Philippines, after the 1980s East and Southeast Asia became one of the world's least conflictual regions. Geopolitics and economic development worked hand in hand to reduce conflict in the region and, in this respect, the East Asian peace has been a confluential peace. The general problem with a confluential peace is that the factors that shape it evolve over time, and the specific circumstances in question seem to be evolving in a different direction, with East Asia shaping up to be the most central locale of the contest between US and Chinese hegemony, both regionally and perhaps globally. This book argues that the idea of the East Asian peace now requires adjustment to the current and near future context. The more general arguments presented here focus on alternative interpretations of how regional peace and order should be interpreted, while the more specific arguments involve interpretations of Chinese and other countries' behaviour in the context of the heightened rivalry between China and the United States.This book will be of much interest to students of East Asian politics, peace studies, foreign policy and International Relations.

This book offers a novel interpretation of Spinoza's basic metaphysics of God, body, and mind. It considers the fundamental question of how finite things, especially human minds, are in God. This book addresses the complex socioeconomic situation in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, in the context of the labour market, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.It analyses and assesses the measures which influence the process of Ukrainian war refugees' adaptation to the Polish labour market, surveying the engagement of local actors, such as employers, labour market institutions and nongovernmental organisations. It examines the impact of the refugee crisis on this market, as well as mobilisation of various groups of actors in order to support this specific group of migrants in adapting to life in Poland. The authors argue that this phenomenon of the migration of war refugees confirms the thesis that political instability can be a factor in pushing people abroad as equally important as inequalities in prosperity.The book identifies the characteristic features of the stream of war refugees from Ukraine as a category of cross-border flows. Before the Russian attack, the influx of Ukrainians to Poland was due mainly to economic pressures, whereas, after the outbreak of war, Ukrainians' motivation to cross the border with Poland as well as the structure of this migration stream have radically changed. Henrik Ibsen's plays were written at a critical juncture in late nineteenth-century European culture. Ibsen and Degeneration looks at the recurrence of ideas of degeneration in three of Ibsen's plays: in Ghosts, it is the motif of syphilis, highly shocking to Ibsen's contemporaries, that serves as an allegory of degeneration. In Rosmersholm, degeneration is reconfigured as an overcultivation that eventually makes a family unfit for life. In Hedda Gabler, meanwhile, Hedda, having been for all practical purposes raised as a man, has come to think of herself as one, a circumstance which informs her final decision to end her life - her final degeneration. By reading these three plays from a fresh perspective, Ibsen and Degeneration sheds new light on some of Ibsen's most enduring contributions to world drama.
