  • - A Collection of the Greatest Broncos Stories Ever Told
    av Andrew Mason
    196,-

This updated edition in the best-selling "Tales from the Sidelines" series captures the memorable moments, colorful characters, outstanding players, and championship seasons that are part of the Broncos' storied history. Beginning with the franchise's origins as a charter member of the American Football League in 1960, Andrew Mason takes the reader on a journey that includes a decade of Bronco futility, the AFL-NFL merger, and the team's first-ever playoff appearance in 1977, when they went all the way to the Super Bowl. Since then, the Denver Broncos have become one of the NFL's most consistent and successful franchises, with just six losing seasons in the last thirty-seven years.Mason mines the team's rich history for stories that are revealing, moving, and often hilarious. Examples from the first ten years are "the worst uniforms ever," the arrival of Lou Saban and Floyd Little, and the story of "Marlin the Magician." The 70s brought John Ralston, the 3-4 Orange Crush defense, the Miracle of '77, and wild man Lyle Alzado. John Elway took the Broncos through the 80s and 90s, "The Drive," five Super Bowls, two championships, and "the greatest walk off ever." Fans are treated to the "ups, downs, and frowns" of Jay Cutler, the second coming of Peyton Manning, two more Super Bowls, one more championship, and the dominance of Von Miller. "Mile High Football" is alive and well in Denver, but it wasn't always that way. In this newly revised edition of Tales from the Denver Broncos Sideline, Andrew Mason gives readers the stories of the low points that tested Broncos fans' allegiance, the incredible highs that followed, and everything in between.

  • - A Collection of the Greatest Stories Ever Told
    av Rico Petrocelli
    196,-

By the end of 1966, the Boston Red Sox were a team in serious trouble. The Red Sox had not won a pennant in twenty years and had not posted a winning record in eight. Pampered by their benevolent owner, Tom Yawkey, the Red Sox had developed a reputation as a team that cared more about having a good time than winning baseball games. The "Gold Sox" (or "Jersey Street Jesters") were sometimes playing before fewer than 1,000 fans at Fenway Park. Yawkey, disillusioned, began seriously considering selling the team or moving the franchise to another city. Then, in 1967, a brash rookie manager named Dick Williams took charge of a hungry, but very young and inexperienced team that did not know how to win. A strict disciplinarian, Williams had no tolerance for nonsense, and he taught the Red Sox how to play the game right. Yet, when he predicted that the Red Sox would win more games than they'd lose in 1967, no one took him seriously. The Red Sox forged a 10-game, midseason winning streak. Adopting the theme song from the hit Broadway musical, Man of La Mancha, the 1967 Red Sox season became "The Impossible Dream." The fans grew excited again and started flocking to Fenway Park or tuning their radios to the broadcasts of the games. Over the season's final six weeks, the Red Sox never led or trailed by more than 1 1/2 games. Three teams were still in the pennant race during their final game. When that day was over, the Red Sox had become the first and only team in major-league history to rise from ninth place to league champion. The Red Sox remain indebted to the 1967 champions, and they will be indebted forever. Rico Petrocelli, one of Boston's most beloved athletes and a twenty-four-year-old shortstop on that "Impossible Dream" team, recaptures the thrills of that improbable season through his unique anecdotes. In this re-release timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary that magical year, Rico chronicles both the nightmare that threatened to swallow an organization and the resurrection that would reinvigorate a team and a city that share the same heart

  • - Where Have You Gone? Cal Ripken Jr., Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, and Other Orioles Greats
    av Jeff Seidel
    196,-

Baltimore Orioles: Where Have You Gone? is a unique look at what a number of former Orioles personalities have gone on to do in life since their playing careers ended. Author Jeff Seidel spoke with a wide-ranging selection of former Baltimore players, from such stars as Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson to those who had only their “fifteen minutes” of fame, such as Dave Criscione and John Stefero. A common thread seems to be how many of the former Orioles stayed in baseball in some form, like Ripken, who started his own minor league team in Aberdeen, Maryland, something that’s clearly close to his heart; or former catcher Andy Etchebarren, a longtime minor league manager and coach.Baltimore Orioles: Where Have You Gone?, first published in 2006 and newly updated through the 2016 season, features men like Mike Flanagan, the Cy Young Award–winning lefty who anchored the Orioles pitching staff in the late ’70s and early ’80s, finally becoming the team’s pitching coach and co–general manager. The book also includes a chapter on Tommy Davis, the team’s first designated hitter, who tells how he came up with a key base hit after nearly missing his at-bat because he was talking on the clubhouse telephone; Doug DeCinces, faced with the cruel task of taking over for Brooks Robinson at third base, talking about the huge pressure he faced and how he truly appreciated playing for the Orioles; and finally the legendary Robinson himself, still a fan favorite more than 35 years after retiring, telling how he told the Chicago White Sox thanks, but no thanks, when they asked him about managing. It’s all here; perfect for any Orioles fan!
