  • av Anja Schedel
    681

Anja Schedel analyzes two models in the field of algorithmic game theory which both constitute bilevel problems in networks. The first model is a game-theoretic variant of the well-known Steiner forest problem, and one is interested in an optimal sharing of the cost of the Steiner forest. The author provides (and partially exactly characterizes) network structures which allow for cost-minimal pure Nash equilibria. The second model is motivated from privatized public roads, in which private, selfishly acting firms build roads, and as compensation for their investment, are allowed to set prices for using the roads. For a basic model of this situation, the author shows existence and uniqueness of pure Nash equilibria. The existence result requires a non-standard proof approach since techniques like Kakutani's fixed point theorem cannot be applied directly.

  • - Evidence on Mobility and Integration of Bulgarian Migrants in Germany
    av Vesela Kovacheva
    1 101

This study provides empirical evidence on the considerable but often unnoticed impact of EU accession on the mobility and integration of migrants from Bulgaria in Germany. Original data from a time-location sampling survey in Hamburg reveal that free movement not only induced a high level of mobility among EU citizens from Bulgaria after 2007 but also enabled their more permanent settlement in Germany. The study also provides statistical evidence that EU citizenship contributed to better legal integration of Bulgarian migrants in Germany, but national policies shaped to a greater extent their integration in terms of participation in the core areas of life. Restrictive policies such as transitional periods in the freedom of work hampered labour market integration and created more disadvantaged positions for workers. Inclusive policies such as the dual citizenship policy facilitated the naturalisation of settled migrants and led to exceptionally high naturalisation rates for Bulgarians that point to their successful integration in society. However, integration successes remain almost unnoticed in public discourse, which is dominated by the image of Bulgarian migration as a challenge.

  • - Assessment and Development
    av Macarena Larrain Jory
    861

Considering the relevance of teachers' diagnostic competence for understanding students' thinking and providing effective learning opportunities, Macarena Larrain investigates the development of future primary school teachers' diagnostic competence in error situations already during initial teacher education. Using video vignettes of classroom situations and samples of students' work, the author focuses on fostering future teachers' competence to identify students' errors, elaborate hypotheses about the causes of those errors and to design appropriate strategies for supporting students in overcoming their misconceptions. She also describes aspects of teachers' knowledge, beliefs and experience that are relevant for the competence and its development.

  • av Christian Mayr
    917

This book treats various methods for stability analysis and controller design of local model networks (LMNs). LMNs have proved to be a powerful tool in nonlinear dynamic system identification. Their system architecture is more suitable for controller design compared to alternative approximation methods. The main advantage is that linear controller design methods can be, at least locally, applied and combined with nonlinear optimization to calibrate stable state feedback as well as PID controller. The calibration of stable state-feedback controllers is based on the closed loop stability analysis methods. Here, global LMIs (Linear Matrix Inequalities) can be derived and numerically solved. For LMN based nonlinear PID controllers deriving global LMIs is not possible. Thus, two approaches are treated in this book. The first approach works iteratively to get LMIs in each iteration step. The second approach uses a genetic algorithm to determine the PID controller parameters where for each individual the stability is checked. It allows simultaneous enhancement of (competing) optimization criteria.

  • av Changsheng Hua
    861

Changsheng Hua proposes two approaches, an input/output recovery approach and a performance index-based approach for robustness and performance optimization of feedback control systems. For their data-driven implementation in deterministic and stochastic systems, the author develops Q-learning and natural actor-critic (NAC) methods, respectively. Their effectiveness has been demonstrated by an experimental study on a brushless direct current motor test rig.The author:Changsheng Hua received the Ph.D. degree at the Institute of Automatic Control and Complex Systems (AKS), University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, in 2020. His research interests include model-based and data-driven fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant techniques.

  • - On the Relationship of Identity, Agency and Personal Data
    av Estella Ferraro
    681

The book explores the ambivalent relationship between identity, agency and personal data in the age of digitalisation. Using qualitative empirical research including a heterogeneous sample the author analyses the conditions under which humans share personal data, construct their selves and act socially. The results show how different data and the meaning attached to them vary over time und thus create distortions and fragmentations in relation to how the self is (re)presented. The subjects face a loss of agency in light of the power ascribed to data, which are often perceived and positioned as objective and unchallengeable. This leads to a sense of unease about sharing data, for which different coping techniques are found. The book critically reflects on these findings and concludes both empirically and theoretically on how identity and agency are constituted in the digital world and the educational implications that result out of this dynamic.

  • - The Cases of Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States
    av Fabian Klein
    917

This book examines the role of scientific expertise in minimum wage policy making in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It finds that scientific research is an important part of the public discourse on minimum wages in all three countries. Newspapers frequently cite scholars and research institutions, providing their readers with a good sense of how scientific research evaluates the effects of minimum wages. How often this happens depends on the context. Most importantly, newspapers from the United States cite researchers more frequently than newspapers from the two European countries. The book also shows that scientific research influences the policy preferences of political actors such as trade unions, political parties, and government agencies. The influence is based on policy-oriented learning. It is strong in Germany and the United Kingdom, and weaker in the United States. In both cases, cross-country differences are found to be related to different styles of using scientific expertise in the three countries.

  • - The Elephant in the Room
    av Marc-Philip Hermann-Cohen
    1 211

The Holocaust is inseparable from the Israeli identities even seven decades following the atrocities during World War II, Israeli daily life is shaped by the horrible crimes committed by the Nazis. This book conceptualizes the intricacies of the Israeli identity in relation to learning German as a foreign language (GFL) in Israel throughout the course of history and the changing conception of Germany. This book includes an analysis of a selection of twenty-five GFL language books which reflect the stigmatization and tabooization of the Holocaust and also the qualitative analysis of a subject pool of 105 learners of GFL. The author finds that identities are co-constituted by four individualized Thought Styles, a concept borrowed from Ludwik Fleck. Thought Styles capture the individual perspective of the language learner's view of Germany and are categorized in this thesis as German Engineering, Cold Germany, Neo-Nazi Germany, and The Other Germany. The research draws from discourse theory, critical psychology, and the oft-overlooked classical theory of Ludwik Fleck. Although the relationship between Germany and Israel has been amicable for the last six decades, the choice for Israelis to learn the language that was used by a nation that once attempted to eradicate the Jewish people is emotive and infinitely complex.

  • - A Comparative Analysis
    av Christian Henning Schimpf
    1 341

This book identifies the different forms that protest voting can take in times when populism flourishes. Contrary to the popular view of protest voting as merely venting frustration, this book argues that protest voting can also be conceived of as a strategic signal of discontent, originating from sources, such as party policy positions. The empirical analyses rest on election survey data collected in democratic countries around the world between 2005 and 2017 to understand protest voting as a strategic signal, and the conditions under which it occurs. The main results show that protest voting can indeed be a strategic signal. This finding challenges the predominant view in the literature and the public discourse of protest voters as aimless, frustrated voters.

  • - Jihadi Networks and Mobilization in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, 1998-2018
    av Johannes Saal
    1 471

With the departure of European Muslims to the "e;Islamic State"e; and a wave of terrorist attacks in Europe in recent years, the questions of why and how individuals radicalize to Jihadi extremism attracted keen interest. This thesis examines how individuals radicalize by applying a theoretical framework that primarily refers to social capital theory, the economics of religion, and social movement theory. The analysis of the biographical backgrounds, pathways of radicalization, and network connections of more than 1,300 Jihadi extremists from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland shows that radicalization primarily need to be considered as a social process of isolation from former social contacts and affiliation with a new religious group. Radicalization is characterized by the transformation of social capital and often channeled through so-called "e;strong ties"e; to friends and family members. These peer networks constitute the social fundament of radical clusters on the local level which are usually linked to a broader milieu through exclusive mosque communities and religious authorities. Bonding social capital within these radical groups minimizes the risk of betrayal and promotes trust essential for clandestine and risky activities.

  • - A Longitudinal Institutional Analysis of EU Communications Policy
    av Simon P. Rinas
    1 211

EU communications policy has massively changed due to both global competition on the ICT market and technological developments that led to the emergence of Internet technology. This book analyzes the structural and procedural transformation processes inside the EU legislative processes and concludes that EU communications policy struggles to reflect today's internet-enabled communications reality. It provides insights in the institutional conditions that maintained specific patterns of EU communications policy since the beginning of telecommunications regulation and concludes with an outlook on the technological and regulatory challenges ahead.

  • av Chenyi Zhang
    681

Chenyi Zhang analyzes the influences of moving ground simulation technique in wind tunnel tests. In his work, the classical investigations on vehicle shape parameters with fixed ground conditions are reviewed with modern moving ground simulation technique. The investigations are performed by means of CFD simulations and model scale wind tunnel tests at IFS, University of Stuttgart. The shape parameters of two reference vehicles - the DrivAer and the AeroSUV model with notchback, fastback and estate back - are varied and investigated. The author presents different results in drag and lift for the varied geometry parameters. The classical results of the parametric study on the vehicle basic shapes for vehicle aerodynamics could be complemented with the findings of the present research.

  • av Sebastian Hann
    1 211

Sebastian Hann describes the development of a quasi-dimensional burn rate model that enables the prediction of a fuel variation, without the need for a recalibration of the model. The model is valid for spark-ignition combustion engines powered by conventional and carbon-neutral fuels. Its high predictive ability was achieved by modeling the fuel-dependent laminar flame speed based on reaction kinetics calculations. In addition, the author discards a fuel influence on flame wrinkling by performing an engine measurement data analysis. He investigates the fuel influence on engine knock and models it via ignition delay times obtained from reaction kinetics calculations.

  • av Antonino Vacca
    1 211

Water injection is one of the most promising technologies to improve the engine combustion efficiency, by mitigating knock occurrences and controlling exhaust gas temperature before turbine. As result, the engine can operate at stoichiometric conditions over the whole engine map, even during the more power-demanding RDE cycles. Antonino Vacca presents a methodology to study and optimize the effect of water injection for gasoline engines by investigating different engine layouts and injection strategies through the set-up of a 3D-CFD virtual test bench. He investigates indirect and direct water injection strategies to increase the engine knock limit and to reduce exhaust gas temperature for several operating points.

  • - An Assessment of Their Impact on International Society
    av Christian Pohlmann
    1 147

The question if states should intervene in massive humanitarian emergencies without a legal right to do so, is still object of an important debate in the theory and practice of international relations. This situation has not changed with the emergence of the 'Responsibility to Protect' norm, which stopped short of a right to intervene without a Security Council authorisation. The book assesses the impact of such unauthorised humanitarian interventions on international society and regions; it is written in the context of the English School of International Relations. Based on empirical studies the author argues that they can be progressive-constructive for international order, if conducted with explicit legitimacy, integrity, and great power participation. The argument is based on the analysis of six cases conducted between 1946 and 2005. Specific consideration is given to the cases of Liberia (1990) and Kosovo (1999). In sum, the book contributes to the solidarism-pluralism debate and the discourse on humanitarian interventions.

  • av Xudong Zhang
    1 341

Due to the improvements on electric motors and motor control technology, alternative vehicle power system layouts have been considered. One of the latest is known as distributed drive electric vehicles (DDEVs), which consist of four motors that are integrated into each drive and can be independently controllable. Such an innovative design provides packaging advantages, including short transmission chain, fast and accurate torque response, and so on. Based on these advantages and features, this book takes stability and energy-saving as cut-in points, and conducts investigations from the aspects of Vehicle State Estimation, Direct Yaw Moment Control (DYC), Control Allocation (CA). Moreover, lots of advanced algorithms, such as general regression neural network, adaptive sliding mode control-based optimization, as well as genetic algorithms, are applied for a better control performance.

  • - A Neopragmatic Landscape Approach
av Corinna Jenal & Olaf Kuhne
    577

The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, has been the scene of fundamental changes in recent decades. In the context of the tripole of petrochemistry, Louisiana State University (LSU) and public administration (especially of the state of Louisiana), which has been fully developed since the end of the 1920s, general processes (such as the transition from modern to post-modern spatial development) mix with specific local and regional characteristics and logics, also in dealing with spaces (such as the eccentric location of the downtown area, the limited influence of spatial planning). The result is a social-spatial formation of a 'multivillage metropolis'. The investigation of this 'multivillage metropolis' follows a neopragmatic approach that triangulates different theories, methods, data and researcher perspectives.Videos per App: Laden Sie die Springer Nature More Media kostenlos herunter - Abbildungen im Buch per App mit Handy oder Tablet scannen, um Videos zu streamen.
