Dominic Ongwen was abducted in 1987 when he was 8 or 9 years old  by the Lord's Resistance Army ('LRA') in Northern Uganda and trafficked as a child soldier; he made multiple unsuccessful attempts to escape, and finally succeeded in late 2014.  He turned himself into the International Criminal Court in 2015 and was prosecuted.  Mr. Ongwen's defence was that he was not responsible for the crimes of the LRA, based on his mental illnesses and duress, stemming from his abduction and subsequent coercion and indoctrination under Joseph Kony within the LRA. In February 2021, the ICC's Trial Chamber IX convicted Dominic Ongwen of 61 charges and two modes of liability and he was sentenced to 25 years incarceration. This work critiques the judicial racial and cultural biases and blindspots in the Ongwen Judgment rendered by the ICC, as related to the affirmative defences of mental disease or defect and duress and to sentencing, from the perspective of the author who served as a defence counsel in the case.BETH S. LYONS is a senior defence counsel, with 30+ years of experience. She has served as a defence counsel at the ICTR and ICC in five international criminal cases.  Previously, she worked for The Legal Aid Society in New York City, in its criminal defence and appeals divisions.

The aim of this text is to introduce discrete mathematics to beginning students of mathematics or computer science. It does this by bringing some coherency into the seemingly incongruent subjects that compose discrete math, such as logic, set theory, algebra, and combinatorics. It emphasizes their theoretical foundations and illustrates proofs along the way. The book prepares readers for the analysis of algorithms by discussing asymptotic analysis and a discrete calculus for sums. The book also deduces combinatorial methods from the foundations that are laid out. Unlike other texts on this subject, there is a greater emphasis on foundational material that leads to a better understanding. To further assist the reader in grasping and practicing concepts, roughly 690 exercises are provided at various levels of difficulty. Readers are encouraged to study the examples in the text and solve as many of the exercises as possible. The text is intended for freshman or sophomore undergraduate students in mathematics, computer science, or similar majors. The assumed background is precalculus. The chapter dependency chart included is designed to help students, independent readers, and instructors follow a systematic path for learning and teaching the material, with the option to explore material in later chapters.

This book presents philosophy as a historical series of answers to two questions: the meaning question (what does it all mean?) and the reality question (what is real rather than illusory?). Presenting philosophy as a historical series of answers to these two questions gives a new view of philosophy. It reveals a coherence between the disparate problems of philosophy which is not apparent when philosophy is approached in a systematic and timeless manner. On the basis of this historical approach, the book argues that philosophy was initially concerned primarily with the nature of reality but changed its focus when science was established as a separate discipline in the 17th century. Philosophy¿s main concern is now the meaning question with a focus on questions of value as discussed in moral and political philosophy and in aesthetics. This book is essential reading for all scholars and researchers in philosophy and especially those interested in the history of philosophy.

This book draws a pathway from metabolic assessment and nutrition support to advances in renal replacement therapy and organ support in critical care, underling the specific clinical aspect and focusing on medical clinical management in critical care. Metabolic alterations in critically ill patients have been studied for many years. Despite everything, the heterogeneity of critically ill patients, the duration and variable severity of the acute phase of the disease and the numerous confounding factors have hindered progress in this field.A cornerstone of metabolic care is nutrition, that is an essential part of the care for critically ill patients, although the optimal feeding strategy for patients in the intensive care unit is still debated and often remains a challenge for the intensive care team in clinical practice. In addition, acute loss of renal function interferes with the metabolism of all macronutrients, responsible for pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidative and hyper-catabolic situations. The physiological and biological modifications related to acute renal failure in critically ill patients, including the current use of continuous renal replacement therapies, have dramatically changed the type and importance of the metabolic and nutrition disturbances observed during treatment of renal failure. This book - addressed to healthcare providers working in intensive care units - aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis and interpretation of the adult critical care nutrition and critical care nephrology literature, with a particular focus on continuing practice gaps and areas with new data, to assist clinicians in making practical, yet evidence-based decisions regarding nutrition management during the different stages of critical illness.

This textbook provides an undergraduate introduction to Galois theory and its most notable applications.Galois theory was born in the 19th century to study polynomial equations. Both powerful and elegant, this theory was at the origin of a substantial part of modern algebra and has since undergone considerable development. It remains an extremely active research subject and has found numerous applications beyond pure mathematics. In this book, the authors introduce Galois theory from a contemporary point of view. In particular, modern methods such as reduction modulo prime numbers and finite fields are introduced and put to use. Beyond the usual applications of ruler and compass constructions and solvability by radicals, the book also includes topics such as the transcendence of e and ¿, the inverse Galois problem, and infinite Galois theory.Based on courses of the authors at the École Polytechnique, the book is aimed at students with a standard undergraduate background in (mostly linear) algebra. It includes a collection of exam questions in the form of review exercises, with detailed solutions.

This is a open access book. Ranaviruses, double-stranded DNA viruses (family Iridoviridae) that cause systemic, life-threatening disease in a variety of amphibians, reptiles and fish, have contributed to mass die-offs of both wild and captive populations around the globe. These viruses are emerging and increasingly responsible for population declines of ectothermic vertebrates. Because amphibians, reptiles, and freshwater turtles are suitable hosts and among the most imperiled vertebrate taxa in the world, ranaviruses can have significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function. Additionally, many fish that are raised in aquaculture facilities and traded internationally are suitable hosts; thus, the potential economic impact of ranaviruses is significant. Ranaviruses also serve as a model for understanding viral replication and gene function among large double-stranded DNA viruses, e.g., poxviruses, asfarvirus, and ascoviruses. Lastly, study of the host immune response to ranaviral disease and the identification of viral immune evasion genes that negatively regulate host immune functions provide insight into which specific immune elements are most important in protecting host species against severe disease. The effort to produce a 2nd edition of our earlier work grew out of a recent meeting (1st Global Amphibian and Reptile Disease Conference) held in August 2022. Given the continued research in ranaviruses and ranaviral disease since the first edition, this new book updates the latest information on ranaviruses and provides guidance on how to monitor and manage ranaviruses in cold-blooded vertebrate populations.

Economic history interprets crises as cyclical events. However, we are currently experiencing an acceleration of these cycles. In 25 years (2000-2024), we have lived the Twin Towers Attack in 2001, the Financial Crash in 2008, the Covid-2019 pandemic, and current military crises in Ukraine and the Middle East.In the first edition of this book, the authors identified three decision-making patterns (short termism, centralization, and parochialism) characterizing Boardrooms decisions during the financial crash. In this revised and updated edition, the authors explore the main commonalities and differences of decision-making processes between the previous financial crisis and the current continuous crisis regime. The authors highlight how and where the organizational impact of short-termism, centralization and parochialism on Boards decision-making can prove detrimental.Alberto Lavín is Strategy Adjunct Professor for IE Business School. Previously a partner with Accenture, the consulting giant, he now heads his own consulting practice and acts as a family business nonexecutive director and advisor. In 2014, he published, together with Carmelo Mazza, "Boards under crisis: board action under pressure".Carmelo Mazza holds a PhD in Business Economics from IESE Business School. His research interests focus on decision-making and on creative processes. In the last three decades, he has taught in leading institutions (among others, Copenhagen Business School, University of Rome "La Sapienza", and IE Business School) and acted as management consultant and top manager.
