    151

Popular Patristics Series Volume 50Saint Basil of Caesarea (c. 329-378/9 CE) was a monk, bishop, preacher, theologian, and social activist who had very down-to-earth views about eating, drinking, fasting, and feasts in honor of local martyrs. In this new collection of sermon translations-most offered here in English for the first time-Basil addresses such issues as drunkenness, hesitations over baptism, community benefits of fasting, how to be thankful when facing loss and disaster, and the mystery of the incarnation. Also included are three sermons on local martyrs Julitta, Mamas, and Barlaam. This small volume of elegant translations will be a vital and valued resource for anyone interested in religion and the body, early Christian spiritual disciplines, and their application to the Church today.

  • av S Contstantinopl
    151

  • av S Chrysostom
    197

Christian tradition often seems to give only grudging approval to the married life, particularly its sexual aspect. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom we find an important corrective to this view. Although himself a monk, Chrysostom had a profound understanding of the needs of his congregation. Inspired by the epistles to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he discusses the reasons God instituted marriage--primarily to promote holiness of the husband and wife, and only secondarily to produce children. Chrysostom goes on to discuss sexual relations, the mutual responsibilities of marriage, and parenting. While parts of Chrysostom's sermons may seem limited to his own time, the vast majority of his advice has timeless relevance for the Christian family.

  • av Stewart–sykes
    171

Popular Patristics Series Volume 29These are the only three existing ante-Nicene treatises on the Lord's Prayer, and they became the starting point for many other commentaries. Of the three, however, only the discourse of Cyprian is an address to catechumens. Tertullian's treatise contains additional material on the conduct of worship and on prayer in the assembly, and Origen's commentary is a vast work on the whole subject of prayer, as much suited to advanced learners in the school of Christ as to those preparing for baptism. These are the only three existing ante-Nicene treatises on the Lord's Prayer, and they became the starting point for many other commentaries. • av Vladimir Lossky
    201

In this classic study of Orthodox theology, Losky states that 'in a certain sense, all theology is mystical, inasmuch as it shows forth the divine mystery: the data of revelation, the eastern tradition has never nade a sharp distinction between mysticism and theology, between personal experience of the divine mysteries and the dogma affirmed by the Church. ' The term 'mystical theology', denotes the realm of human experience, that which is accessible yet inaccessible, those things understood yet surpassing all knowledge.

  • av Tarazi
    187

The author invites the reader to embark with him on a collective reading of God's Holy Book. He maintains that since only God himself can be the ultimate authority on matters of interpretation, it is the responsibility of each reader to challenge the interpretations of others - including himself.
