We are not alone and we often don't remember this when we feel like our fear and individuality have completely taken over any form of love and unity. I wrote this book with the intention of encouraging us to reignite that connection we have, not only with nature but with all beings. We often become so inundated by our minds, egos, and shadows, that we forget about the organic bond we all have to one another; physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, even creatively. When Don Gutteridge retired from academia in 1993, he intended to say my farewell by publishing a selection of the forty essays he had written over a long career. He gathered them together and gave them a title: The Myth Alive. However, other projects soon began competing for his time. He published two memoir novels in quick succession: Summer's Idyll (1993) and Winter's Descent (1995). Then as a last pedagogical hurrah, he wrote a small volume on teaching theory (Teaching English: 1999). Then it was back to novel writing with Bewilderment (2000) and finally fulltimework on the Marc Edwards mysteries (twelve titles). The Myth Alive was eventually forgotten. When he took it out for a belated look earlier this year, he found that the subject matter, though many years old, was still relevant today because it deals with questions of a literary/critical nature:how poems get made, the uses of history in literary works, the evolution of a Canadian mythology, the question of intention and so on. On November 3, 2020, I had emergency heart surgery. As part of the healing process, I unwittingly intensified my writing poetry in gratitude to those who saved my life and supported me in the harrowing days which followed. In the hospital, I was deeply moved by the constant kindness of the healthcare professionals and my family members who helped me back to life. I saw in them a "kindness response" to life which I always knew existed but now appreciated as the core value of what it means to be a human being. This slim book mostly includes poems written in the wake of my brush with death at the age of 66, events of the last two years and a few pieces reflecting on previous experiences. I hope it adequately expresses my gratitude to those who took care of me in my hour of need and helps others see the need for kindness in everything we do in the hospital, on the street, and at home.
